Hermes undercover: Parcels manhandled and customers mocked | Times Investigation

  • Couriers working for one of Britain’s largest delivery companies mishandle parcels, routinely fail to complete next-day orders and are encouraged to lie to customers, an investigation by The Times has found.
This month an undercover reporter worked for Hermes, which delivers online orders for retailers including John Lewis, Marks & Spencer and Next, amid a surge in complaints about packages being late, damaged or lost.
Managers watched as workers threw parcels across a depot to save time while sorting them, sending many of them clattering into hard cages, against walls or on the floor. One manager admitted that in the chaotic run-up to Christmas shoppers were paying for next-day deliveries with no chance of these being fulfilled. Couriers were encouraged to mislead customers and “act stupid” if faced with complaints.
Hermes has begun a “full investigation”. Retailers that use the company for their deliveries said they were “alarmed” at the findings and have asked it for urgent explanations.

Now boycotting any company that only uses this useless company to deliver their goods. Gave up with Hermes since 2019 after they lost yet another parcel being sent to me. If the company does not care about its staff or its clients then it’s up to the companies that only use them to take action. Dump them or loose your customers. Being the cheapest delivery company never means a good service. When a company gives me a choice of delivery companies I NEVER tick Hermes even if it cost me more to choose another.

I only had issues with Hermes so far and I would rather collect or deliver parcel myself than using this company.
We may agree that Christmas time is insane for warehouses too, but this does not justify damages to customer's property.
Sad to hear that employers still manage a way to pay less then minimum wage.

I am a Hermes courier and the stuff in this video is just the tip of the iceberg. Couriers are constantly scammed by the company. Shame the reporter did not mention the 'Packet Racket' where the company have allegedly defruaded couriers by millions of pounds with mis-banded parcels. More recently, and this is a typical example of their behavior, we had a phoney 3.5% pay rise that only lasts until May and only covers some of our parcels and not others whilst we were promised that all parcel rates would be increased. Come May the company will have free reign to slash our parcel rates back to whatever they like. Rotten, exploitative, company making record profits in the last year.

Yes, that's true, on work come to 8 AM, sort our parcels, then load to van and start delivery, for one delivered parcel pay 55 cents. And job time is from first stop to last stop, nobody doesn't care, that couriers doesn't get salary for sorting and work average 10 hours per day six days of week. And yes, when costumer says "parcel is delivered but is lost" parcel price get from courier salary.

I used to work as a Hermes Field Manager, back in the day when they were called that, and can confirm everything in this video is true. Your parcels are treated like sh1t and nobody cares (especially at 'peak' (Christmas))
When this reporter stated his 'packet rate' my immediate thought was "that's not a bad rate". In my time I had couriers who were on .47p and .55p per packet and those rounds didn't yield many parcels at all. If you wanted a decent paying round, you needed to sell an organ or two or be 'in' with the RDM (essentially an area manager).
Field Managers were often encouraged to squeeze every last drop out of the couriers and to pressurise them and threaten to take their rounds if they didn't comply. I'm ashamed to say that for a period of time I tried to do that, so that I could earn my bonuses and be on top of our KPI board, but I found it extremely difficult as I am not horrible by nature. Treating the couriers the way we were expected to went totally against the way I was brought up and how I chose to conduct myself as an adult.
The fact I didn't tow the line, and in the eyes of middle managemen's wasn't performing, led to me being taken into PIP meetings, investigations and allegations that I was in cahoots with couriers and was either stealing parcels or overpaying them and splitting the proceeds.
Eventually the stress, pressure and toxic environment took a serious toll on my mental health and I had to leave.
In my opinion there are three fundamental issues at Hermes:
    - The Top is clueless as to what really happens at the bottom: This is either an inherent flaw in design or its by choice
    - nobody takes responsibility: There are/were no internal helplines to help Field Managers find parcels. I spent my first 7 weeks trying to find a customer's parcel. In the end I was told to tell them to contact the shop they bought it from as 'our job isn't to find their parcel' (go figure that out)
    - they genuinely don't care enough about the couriers: if they did, they'd pay better 'Simples'
The only thing I enjoyed working for Hermes was knowing my couriers. They were a hard working bunch of individuals who were just trying to provide and get a bit more for their families.
I worked at Hermes for 3 years. After 5 months I stopped 'selling the dream' of how convenient a job it was and that if you worked hard you could make a mint, as it was all a huge lie. I just couldn't look people in the eye anymore and lie about what they'd get in their wage packet. I could no longer lie and tell them that they had such poor pay because they were too slow or weren't 'compliant'.
They were being paid poorly because that's how the system was designed.

That's depressing to hear, my hermes courier is actually very friendly and great at his job. I just hate to see the treatment they recieve and how little they earn for all their hard work. I'm sorry you had to go through all that.

At least you are honest about your behaviour as a manager and repented for it. I have worked in various professions and the managers are mostly evil (with a few rare exceptions). Most managers are also secret society satanic cult members, the ones that so called 'conspiracy theorists' talk about and expose. They treat the staff members who are also members much better (this is one of the hidden reasons as to why favouritism often occurs in the work place towards certain workers who don't seem to earn the love of their managers through merit).

You can actually get a relatively stable communication going with Hermes if you use .. Support(dot)myhermes(dot)co(dot)uk.
From recent experience this is where all enquiries made by email go, but you are able to add comments onto enquiries, start new incidents and ask that they contact you back. This will also go through to your email address.
I sent an item as an Ebay seller WITHOUT a Hermes account at a local shop. I was still able to get a full refund after the item was "lost" for a month and later found by Hermes and also got a full postal refund.
Not sure if this is a very hidden service but It was possible to get an open line of communication with them here.
You can also call their UK number... and if you can get past the automated delivery number (16 numbers) entering stage you can get patched through to a human! Just try a few times because occasionally it only works if you pretend to be the seller and other times only if you pretend to be the reciever.
      Hope this helps! :D

As a customer it’s frustrating and extremely inconvenient, but for the employees it is cruel and inhumane and not dissimilar to modern day slavery. I’m more disgusted over the extremely low pay and the unreasonable time frames. Unbelievable. Having said that, having contempt for the wealthy is not good. It doesn’t help anyone and having a big house doesn’t mean they have a better life. Rather than being angry with the customer, do better at school yourself, and employers need to be fair, pay a fair wage and act lawfully. There are always other jobs out there - the country is crying out for carers but no one wants to do that!!!

Don't blame the drivers they are only paid (very little) per completed delivery, nothing for the time to load up, nothing for fuel and pay their own insurance, nothing for having to use their own phone and nothing if a delivery isn't successful. It is up to the retailers to demand change, but they are mostly too happy enjoying the benefits of ripping off the delivery drivers too...

Had a friend who was a sorter in his local depot. this was just before covid when he left and got a job elsewhere basically said they were decades behind in their systems i.e hand scanning everything so things got lost, was told to pack as quickly as possible onto a van and not care if items were damaged. Friend told me he had a minute until his shifted ended once and so started getting ready to finish and his boss shouted at him and called him lazy for standing about doing nothing! As for using them for either sending or recieving parcels at best they are "ok" had cards through my door before for collections despite them not even ringing the buzzer, most items that are meant to be say 2 day take up to 3 WEEKS to arrive, had a international parcel that showed as "incorrect tracking number", it was meant to be a 5 day delivery and took almost 3 MONTHS to arrive and CS just told me to "keep waiting"

The Hermes lady in our area has been delivering empty parcels. She or who ever from Hermes has been taking content out and re-taping them. Sometimes the packages are opened and she nicely tucks the opened side under and takes her delivery picture. Thank god for ring doorbells where we can capture footage now. How is it that this sort of stealing from consumer is even allowed on an ongoing basis? The workers clearly feel confident that they won’t face any consequences and keep doing it again and again! We now refuse to purchase from any retailers who use Hermes as their delivery company.

The first time I ever had to deal with Evri, they cost the supplier over £100.00 in product because they "lost" the package (after i paid an extra £10 for mext day delivery) and then a month later the package just so happened to turn up after i had gotten the refund from the supplier. I unfortunately have a fragile package on its way (laptop replacement screen) that is being delivered by them in the next few days and wondering if i am either going to get it or get it broken especially after seeing this... Just lost another laptop ordered because of Evri. I can't speak to anyone. Tracking not updated. Holly the bot keeps saying it doesn't recognise my correct tracking number on their horrendous phone system. Can't email them. Live chat is another bot that doesn't find out who stole your parcel. In limbo now. Staying in every day in case it turns up. Seller is worried because he now knows they only compensate up to £20, even though they were responsible for losing the laptop. So he's going to lose a few hundred quid. Next day delivery paid for as well, so should have got VIP service. Disgusting firm full of thieves. Mine has gone missing in the warehouse this time. Meant to make them more contactable with the name change. They've actually made it harder on the phone, as you can't use another order tracking trick anymore. I just wan't to speak to someone before that laptop is gone forever. Their system encourages their thieves. They know it's impossible for customers to contact Evri. The parcels are well gone and untraceable by the time an investigation would start. How are they allowed to operate like this?

I sent a vintage Luxman amplifier by Hermes ( Evri ) I took time to pack it carefully and marked it as fragile, the buyer sent me a photo of it when it arrived and I could not believe the damage that was done to it, the faceplate of the amp is made of 16" inch thick aluminum and that was twisted out of shape, the internals were so damaged that it was beyond repair. I tried to contact the company but after many attempts, I was unable to speak to anyone, I have photos of before and after posting and proof of the packing materials I used, and I have now put my complaint in the hands of a legal company.
