    I always assumed when you bought overnight shipping, the FedEx location descended into total chaos and some guy sprinted into the room, grabbed the package, boarded a jet, and raced to the destination before chucking the package out the window with a parachute attached to it. Then a fedex driver on the ground would retrieve it and place it on the front porch.

    Worked at the Memphis Hub for awhile.. I worked specifically in Heavy Weight, anything over 150 lbs was handled in my area, the size of 4 football fields, ran by over 2000 forklifts. The Memphis world hub is absolutely mind blowing. Planes come in every less 2 minutes on a normal day, spread throughout the sky by 3 miles and run like clockwork. It's amazing to see

    As a FedEx truck driver, I STRONGLY recommend you use a package pickup location rather than home delivery. As states in the video, sometimes theres not enough Freight to warrant sending a truck or plane. However pickup locations act as collection points, which means they might just have enough Freight for regular service.
    Pickup locations are usually cheaper, quicker, and in an age of porch pirates, safer overall.

      remember that they did not start out by calculating all of this and the setting it up, they started out small a long time ago and grew into this size, so all the calculation came in small steps: at first just" can we add a truck here, and there" then probably deciding that one plane is good for expanding, expanding more and more untill they are so big that they had a fleet of aircraft and even building an airport wanst a big risk anymore, and all the way every single profitable investment adds up while the wrong decisions get cut out. In the end you have something giant, hugely complex, extremely difficult to understand but working.
      BTW If you want to experience this effect yourself, you can. In the game Factorio.

      My critical package UPS overnight from North Carolina to NY city is screwed up by UPS.
      My destination ( 30 miles from NY times square) is not in areas affected by inclement weather as per UPS . I booked it on Friday morning from North Carolina and it reached Philadelphia on Saturday and was just 124 miles from its destination in NYC . Sunday and Monday being Christmas there was no update. On Tuesday morning when it was supposed to reach NYC , I see the UPS' 'great routing technology ' ensured it unnecessarily took a south west turn to Louisville Kentucky instead of going north to NY city . Kentucky is at the heart of inclement weather conditions and my package is delayed and is now more than 600 miles from its destination.
      I don't know what to say.
      Such a stupid route planning when they say guaranteed delivery ?
      I won't accept it is due to the bad weather. This package seems to have been mindlessly routed to an area of severe weather conditions (inspite of best forecast available to them) and that too farther away from its destination.

Even after reverse thrust is applied, it's like the nosegear is saying NO PLEASE, JUST A LITTLE BIT LONGER! I DON'T WANT TO TOUCH THAT RUNWAY! Also, during take off roll the nose gear is fighting to lift up, something I already knew about, but it's interesting to watch the PIC forcing it down until he or she rotates.

    I used to work for DHL in Hawaii, FedEx and Ups fly planes from Hawaii with mail and pineapple as there is not enough outbound freight. We never use or own planes, but shipped with comerical airlines, which adds another level of complexity to getting shipments delivered on time.
    That would be a great part 2. Good job.

    I always say the large shipping companies like UPS and FedEx are great at getting packages around the world in hours, but that last few km within the city can take a week because if you're a residential address they just don't care and/or are too busy to wait the 30 seconds it takes you to get to the door. So, if you're lucky they 'drop' the package at the door so it can get stolen, or more likely they slap a 'we tried, but you didn't answer the door in 3.2 seconds' paper notice (and maybe one more duplicate the next day) asking that you pick up your parcel all the way across the city.
    If you're a business, with a receptionist, it tends to work better.
    If you're a residential customer, the shippers excel at delivery of post it notes on doors... packages not so much.

    This is how things really work...
    Being a former Industrial Engineer at UPS, and specifically having one assignment working in the Air for a period of time, I can tell you the overnight process begins well before anyone's asleep.
    Your analysis of FedEx being the largest air cargo carrier based on the size of their aircraft fleet is flawed. Those figures include small aircraft owned by FedEx. UPS operates chartered small aircraft well in excess of the FedEx fleet. It's cheaper to pay high charter fees than incur the maintenance costs associated with those aircraft, and not having full time employees who only work/fly a few hours per day, not to mention their healthcare expenses. (Don't tell FedEx this)!
    I can specifically tell you why FedEx and UPS are located in Memphis and Louisville. It's based on time zones only. The East Coast aircraft are the first to arrive and the last to depart. The West Coast aircraft are last to arrive, but the first aircraft to depart. They travel much greater distances, hence they must depart first, plus your gaining time heading West, but losing time heading East. Common sense, right?
    From the West Coast only East Coast destination packages flow East. West coast destination packages flow to the West Coast hubs. Jet fuel and engine reserves are very expensive. Why fly more weight and cube than you have to? You got that one right! You also got the sorting in Anchorage right to! (Engine reserves? - The total hours you can fly an engine before maintenance and heavy maintenance is required).
    The day sorting you referred to as day sorts is for Second Day Air and Three Day Select. Why? Again time. Those packages are not as time sensitive as overnight packages, hence you can fly less aircraft and larger aircraft which can make multiple stops on the way to Louisville and Memphis.
    Most people may be interested to know very few Three Day Select packages actually fly. Once again, time. Most can be ground fed directly to ground hubs that service their final destination. When I was in Louisville I noticed several large air containers sitting on the ramp. When I inquired as to why those air containers were sitting there, the response was, "That's Three Day Select, aging".
    No, no, no, on buying older aircraft. Yes they do purchase older aircraft, but they're not less efficient. For years UPS operated a very old fleet of DC-8's, however these aircraft were rebuilt for structural integrity, and here's what you missed, they were all fitted with modern day Rolls Royce engines. Quiet and very fuel efficient. We laughed on the ramp at DHL and Burlington back in the day.
    Overall I would say your research was pretty darn good!

    • @richardlaning234
      @richardlaning234 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Statistically speaking what PACE ARROW is addressing is business starting entrepreneurs which by in large (due to personality) tend to be non "A" students (their are many exceptions to this rule ... make no mistake). These entrepreneurs however make up a very small percentage of "C" students so on average "A" students do fair better in life (most "C" students long term fair less well financially than "A" students). This tends to be due to the fact that an "A" student (again overly generalizing here) by in large tends to be more of a rule follower and work better in a structured system whereas the personality traits of an entrepreneur tend to be more maverick thinking and thus the conformity of a ridged educational system (or corporate hierarchy) does not suit them as well begating not performing as well.
      As for the argument of where teachers and government employees come from that is a fairly easy thing to decipher. By in large educators have a tendency to have been very good students in their field (although not necessarily in other fields) which means yes they tend to be "A" students particularly in fields where a graduate degree is required to teach, simply put "C" students don't get into graduate school until all the "A" and "B" student applicants get a spot so very few "C" students are able to even apply for these positions as a teacher. Government employees are a weirder bag, they tend to be the best applicant for the pool the position hires from strictly based on the skills required for the job. Governments can not and do not hire based on subjective things like character or cultural fit. This makes for some very weird working environments, policies and co-workers. The employees of the government are subjectively the best by the book thus tend to be "A" students in the fields they applied for, the environment they are placed in doesn't usually showcase them well at all however.

    Wendover puts a good feeling into how FedEx reliably tranfers cargo overnight. FedEx started from just a simple term paper handed in by the undergraduate Frederick Smith in 1965. His proposal was said to be revolutionary in time-saving delivering technology but his prof didnt realize this and just gave him an average grade for it. Now, the guys a money-maker!

    I work with UPS. And it is amazing how they reach any part of the world in a day. Usually Air comes into our truck warehouse around 8:00am. Our drivers are out of there usually around 8:45 and have to get the air packages to the address by Noon.

    • @Tucher97
      @Tucher97 6 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      but there is a slight problem with the drone part, some jack asses in the world sees drone they think "oooo how can i falsify a "drone attack" out of the person" or shoot the drone down and steal the package

    • @Kittsuera
      @Kittsuera 6 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      As far as someone attempting to shoot down/ steal the package, there are camera's for that.
      laws that would render that a felony.
      Containers that could have tracking devices, alert sensors, and anti theft locks that would make it hard to remove the package without authorization.
      the theft rate on the drone packages likely would not be any higher than people swiping a package left at your front door.

    • @Tucher97
      @Tucher97 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      i am sure a handful of idiotic minorities who attempts doing that will be arrested all the while whining for a lawyer, a case of at first theft rate is average but quickly drop out, so quick we might forget about it, but i am just being skeptic because i rather not loose a package i spent like $60 on and suddenly it didnt arrive on the day it was suppose to and i was given a call that hey its on its way, but if i ordered a game that i pre ordered and it had bonuses that is ONLY AVAILABLE on a certain date
      BUT i am gonna stop as that is unneccesary bantering

    This is honestly so mind-boggling. Like all these airplanes and airports and strategies that have been tweaked and relatively perfected to somehow get packages from A to B in ~12 hours. Country to country even. So much money and planning. Like how did they figure this all out, and how much money is spent to build these airports/facilities?? I have so many questions lmfao

    • @ttss5726
      @ttss5726 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      12 hours? more like less then that. take a first over night package once the sort ends say at 925 at night that said package is then brought to the AP by truck loaded on a plane then flies to Memphis of its hub then picked up by a courier at 4in the morning to be delivered by 9am bare in mind that plane doesn't leave till after 1030 at night. its even better when it goes to another country. you have no idea what time constraint is and while all the arm chair youtube QB's bitch moan and cry they don't realize how closely time matters. 1 minute is huge in their world

      So it's just bull shit you've made up, or can you cite a reliable secondary source (wikipedia style) to proof your ludicrous claim at least holds some merit and isn't just taken out of thin air? As happens in civil discussions, the person who makes an unbelievable claim should cite the source, that's your job, I'm not going to do your job for you as the likelyhood of me wasting time (if the claim is fake) is too big. Since you know if your claim is either true or false, you have one of two ethical things to do:
      1. Admit that it's false, if it's false
      or
      2. Cite a reliable secondary source as evidence that it isn't false, if (you think) it isn't false

      That seems a little too simplistic (and overly positive sounding) definition for globalization. Here's the definition from Merriam Webster:
      Definition of globalization
      : the act or process of globalizing : the state of being globalized; especially : the development of an increasingly integrated global economy marked especially by free trade, free flow of capital, and the tapping of cheaper foreign labor markets

But after watching this video; I'm actually amazed at how this whole process works. Using cheap older airbus planes to cut costs, using more expensive and advanced airplanes for longer trips to save money on fuel, the multiple hubs throughout the country, using larger and smaller aircrafts, everything becoming automated. Interesting, indeed.
