character chapters ruin the powerscaling. street fighter 5 did this well with letting us play with the bad guys aswell. tekken 8 also did this. mk just needs to write a story and not give people plotarmor for 1 chapter. some fights legit never made sense even in mk9 (the best one). sonja beating bi han? sonja beating kitana and jade in a 2v1? cyber sub beating goro and kintaro in a 2v1 and ermac right after? like sub is a beast but those 3 are insane aswell lorewise.
The reason Motaro was a minotaur in Armageddon was because it was deemed too difficult to animate him as a centaur in 3D graphics. This is why he's never been playable or fought against again after Armageddon, not even in MK9, while the rest of the Trilogy-era characters were, except Chameleon and Khameleon. Which is a shame, because it would be nice to be able to play as Motaro in all of his centaur glory again.
And now it's basically considered a waste of time to redevelop an entire engine just for one character. If there's ever another sprite-based MK game, putting Motaro in it will be a piece of cake, but even with my limited knowledge of 3D animation I know just how much of a pain in the ass it would be to put him in a game with 3D models, and how much development time that would potentially waste only for everybody and their dog to find every glitch and flaw with it on day one.
@@reloadpsi Doesn't help that he'd need unique animations for each fatality because of his unique skeleton. The shokan _kind_ of get away with it, but you can see how the animators don't really account for the extra limbs.

I’m glad my boy Moloch got some love. I was expecting this video to just shit on him for being a bland character which admittedly he is, but his purpose was to just introduce his race and be intimidated. You can say the same for Kintaro and Motaro who, just like Moloch, haven’t really done much in the lore. Big ups for Moloch love 👏🏽 Also, I would say Hsu Hao, Kobra and Hotaru are forgotten. MK fans, for better or worse, always bring them up. I personally would love to see them make a comeback in a new, interesting and fresh way.
Moloch was legit terrifying when the game came out. Both him and Onaga just had that... "Oh shit, it just got real!" Vibe to them. You're trapped inside a single room with no way out, and you *have* to face them. Add onto that they could wreck you with ease. MK really lacks moments like that these days, I think.

I swear Midway era of MK give so many bosses in MK games. For sub-boss we have Goro, Kintaro, Motaro, and Moloch. For final boss we have Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, Shinnok, Quan Chi, Onaga, Blaze, and Dark Kahn. Then come NRS era of MK...they just make Kronika. The rest is just a repeat the same bosses. Even MK1 just repeat Shang Tsung again, literally after we just see him as the main villain in MK11 Aftermath. Seriously NRS doesn't have any creative idea to create new boss now...

I kinda feel that Motaro was underdeveloped in MK3. If you look at all the tweaking done on the MK3 MUGENS, that’s what I would’ve loved to experience in the OG MK3. I found him too easy compared to Goro and Kintaro.
Goro is in MK1 as a Kameo, Motaro is in MK1 as a Kameo...come on now, Kintaro HAS to be playable! If Sheeva's playable AGAIN instead of Kintaro, I'm gonna be so pissed.
Personally I prefer Kintaro to Goro, sadly they didn't give him the same spotlight. My favorite overall boss would be Motaro. What a beast. Also yes, him being a minotaur instead of a centaur just somehow didn't work for me.

The sporadic hand movements of both of them kind of looked menacing, while when they included them in more recent games, they just looked tame somehow. Less of a boss, more of a regular fighter.

Growing up playing Deadly Alliance, Moloch was definitely a challenge for me and I dreaded facing him because I couldnt ever win. However at some point in my frustration I discovered an unfair way to easily beat him. Using Mavado I kept spamming his hooksword sweep attack which Moloch couldn't block. In later years even with other characters, I found Moloch to actually be very easy. He is a pretty slow attacker so as long as you do a pattern like "hit hit hit block" over and over again, you can kick his ass. Only his grab is unblockable but the damage isnt that bad especially if only lands one to two on you in a single round
I get all the bosses that end up as sub-bosses in Armageddon aren't added to this list, but it would be cool to see how onaga, Scorpion, Shao Khan, Shinnok, and the deadly alliance shape up against these 5
Fun list for sure and I think not only the original nature of Goro but his impact is really fitting as the only S tier sub boss of the series as everyone is held to his standard afterwards truly a perfect character. I think Kintaro and Motaro being a is about right as they could be just as difficult but as the series went on sadly fell by the wayside do to changes not only in tech but creative direction which the gaming industry is currently dealing with. Molack while not my favorite from being from the PS2 era which didn't give us a ton of good things in the grand scheme definitely was a tough fight and B is about right. Noob Smoke were so unmemorable I forgot they were even a sub boss but that's more to do with Deception being a really bad game storywise so C is being kind but fair as it's two on one.
Yeah Goro is just in a league of his own for sure and I think A tier was perfectly designed for Kintaro/Motaro. They just did not get as much love as the big guy.
I want to mention Why Noob-Smoke is actually because of cut content where you have tag teams but due to limitations they kept Noob Saibot and Smoke together It's very interesting
With Moloch, I would grab Johnny cage, and spam his (I think square) with his nunchukes which would kinda stunlock him. Then after besting him I'd switch to the char who's ending I needed for the final
I will say this as many times as I need to: there is not a more intimidating sub-boss that MK4 Goro and MK3 Motaro. The way they look in those games is just insanely good. For that alone I would put them together in S Tier. Also, also, why is it that your voice sounds so familiar?

Another thing about Motaro in MK3 - MK Trilogy that wasn't mentioned - projectile attacks don't work against him. They either go through him, or they reflect off. It's another thing that makes his fights such a pain in the ass 😅
good video, but you didn't talk about the semi invulnerability to projectiles he have, since any projectile that hit any place other than his head, will be reflected
I can't think about Motaro without thinking of his appearance in the movie Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. And for me that brings him down at least two tiers for making me think about the movie Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.
I would put Motaro on par with Goro just because he’s just as big, if not bigger, than Goro and had a unique set of moves that made him much harder to fight against than Goro or Kintaro. The Minotaur idea isn’t bad as an excuse to work around the horse body programming but it was poorly executed, they could’ve said that they’re required to perform a ritual to keep their bodies or something. I also think that Moloch could just be another character than a boss character unless they made him bigger, bulkier, and do some kind of special move that makes the player unresponsive or trigger a berserk mode.

Goro isn't just a MK staple but came early enough that he inspired sub bosses in games in general. Even just the idea of sub bosses is something Goro almost single handedly (or four handedly, lol) represented alone. You also forgot that you can't use projectiles against Motaro in MK3, in fact they reflect right back at you.
It's always amusing to see people asking to bring Motaro back for the current games. You just have to picture all the in game mechanics and features and how Motaros unique biology breaks all of it.

I just classify Shao Kahn more as a primary boss so it felt wrong breaking him down as a sub-boss, but obviously Darkseid and Shao Kahn are iconic in their own right

Armageddon: Though the ladders were randomly selected, the one constant (aside from Blaze as final boss), was all the above average bryte warriors/monsters being treated like sub bosses which featured(not including the ones listed in the video): Sheeva Shao Kahn Onaga Also, in MK vs DC Universe, depending on which arcade ladder you chose, Shao Kahn or Darkseid were given Sub-Boss status. Also, wouldn't Shinnok in basic form technically count as a Sub-Boss in MKX since Corrupted Shinnok is the actual final boss?

If one is a novice then kintaro is harder than motaro If you learn how to defeat kintaro and learn his AI then he’s still hard but easier than motaro Reason being is motaro is easier to land hits on but he does it on purpose to allow you to drop your guard which in turn allows him To Defeat you turning the fight around quickly he did that a lot He lets you think he’s just letting himself be beaten this is easy then he just grabs you teleports beams you repeats 😒 so while he may be slightly Less savage than kintaro,motaro is smarter in kombat in terms of using strategy to win like I just mentioned MOTARO LETS HIMSELF BE HIT before he goes in for the win himself with kintaro he is savage so you nvr drop your guard Motaro Getting strategy to drop your guard and then using strategy and teleports and speed is a hard to predict combination that’s a lot harder to predict and thus counter than kintaro Hardest thing about kintaro is his teleport stomp but once you learn to counter it you master it and it allows you to defeat him Motaros teleport isn’t an attack it’s just a teleport so less threatnint than kintaros teleport stomp in that way but motaros teleport is meant to do just that evade attacks but he uses it to fool you teleporting constantly faster than ki taros stomp and it is meant to confuse you and part of motaros strategy to win and even if you know what he’s doing it’s hard to predict where he will end on screen and harder to counter bcuz of it Point being that once you learn to master countering kintaro he is t as hard but g even doing the same with motaro it only gets you so far Kintaro Is initially harder if you have no idea how to properly win but once you learn kintaro and motaro Motaro is harder
Motaro is my favorite. MK3 and Ultimate/trilogy versions OFC. Every other iteration of him is garbage. Cept the movie version of him. I thought he looked pretty sick.
Motaro was the bane of my existence growing up. I was poor. And i had a super nintendo all the way up till i got a ps2. And mk3 was one of 3 games i had.mk3 Motaro and shao kahn are burned into my memory forever
It's just as well not to include her. Despite being a sub-boss she played like a normal character and didn't have boss mechanics like the others did. She was just the closest thing to a sub-boss you could get from the female roster. MK can use a proper female sub-boss, and in the new era it might be cool to see Cetrion or an adult Ferra step into the role... or maybe an even nastier and more powerful D'vorah.
All of those bosses are so, so intimidating! The most intimidating are Motaro, Kintaro, Goro and Moloch! Total walking, breathing nightmares! They always totally scared the shit out of me!🎃👺👹👿😈👻☠️💀👶🤡🐯🐎🐲🐉🐃🐂
Back then if it wasn't for goro i wouldn't bother with Mortal Kombat it was the fantasy flavour a four armed monster and shapeshifting sorcerer. That was my first love :)
In all of gaming history or at least from my perspective, Goro is the ultimate end game boss. After I beat him, the fight after him was cake. No other game has caused that kind of anxiety for me when facing an NPC in a duel or fight. Deathstroke comes close but only for the theatrics..
Im suprised how many people dont know how to cheese moloch. Use Johnny Cage, nunchucks, mash one button (i forget which one, the one with the 4 hit combo) Its an infinite against moloch since moloch cant be knocked down.
Kintaro in my opinion looks more deadly and imposing than goro. And feel like he should be more of a higher ranking character with more of a deadly aura. He looks awesome in mk2

I will say this as many times as I need to: there is not a more intimidating sub-boss that MK4 Goro and MK3 Motaro. The way they look in those games is just insanely good. For that alone I would put them together in S Tier.

Kintaro CAN BE the hardest If you’re a player that doesn’t learn to master battling kintaro but once you properly learn to counter him he becomes easier than motaro bcuz even learning motaro he is still hard to counter even if you kno what hhe w doing he’s just too fast

He was the sub boss of mk4 in arcade and im sure he was probably harder then other normal characters in terms of difficulty setting at least egen ir not we much as goro

Kintaro's best design is MK2, no doubt. His design didn't translate well to 3D models, the cameo in MK11 maybe is the exception.

I would put Motaro on par with Goro just because he’s just as big, if not bigger, than Goro and had a unique set of moves that made him much harder to fight against than Goro or Kintaro. The Minotaur idea isn’t bad as an excuse to work around the horse body programming but it was poorly executed, they could’ve said that they’re required to perform a ritual to keep their bodies or something. I also think that Moloch could just be another character than a boss character unless they made him bigger, bulkier, and do some kind of special move that makes the player unresponsive or trigger a berserk mode.

Goro isn't just a MK staple but came early enough that he inspired sub bosses in games in general. Even just the idea of sub bosses is something Goro almost single handedly (or four handedly, lol) represented alone.

I just classify Shao Kahn more as a primary boss so it felt wrong breaking him down as a sub-boss, but obviously Darkseid and Shao Kahn are iconic in their own right

For Moloch the way I consistently beat him is kept spamming jump kicks constantly until he went down. A cheap trick; but it worked.
Yeah that’s my strategy for all bosses and sub-bosses but Moloch has some incredibly annoying moves

Getting strategy to drop your guard and then using strategy and teleports and speed is a hard to predict combination that’s a lot harder to predict and thus counter than kintaro
Hardest thing about kintaro is his teleport stomp but once you learn to counter it you master it and it allows you to defeat him
Motaros teleport isn’t an attack it’s just a teleport so less threatnint than kintaros teleport stomp in that way but motaros teleport is meant to do just that evade attacks but he uses it to fool you teleporting constantly faster than ki taros stomp and it is meant to confuse you and part of motaros strategy to win and even if you know what he’s doing it’s hard to predict where he will end on screen and harder to counter bcuz of it
Point being that once you learn to master countering kintaro he is t as hard but g even doing the same with motaro it only gets you so far

Most sources I found had like a bunch of different sub-bosses for MKA so I just ignored it entirely
It's just as well not to include her. Despite being a sub-boss she played like a normal character and didn't have boss mechanics like the others did. She was just the closest thing to a sub-boss you could get from the female roster.
MK can use a proper female sub-boss, and in the new era it might be cool to see Cetrion or an adult Ferra step into the role... or maybe an even nastier and more powerful D'vorah.
You failed to mention that Kintaro makes a cameo appearance in MK11 as one of Shang Tsung's fatalities where he sends Kintaro's soul into his opponent

In all of gaming history or at least from my perspective, Goro is the ultimate end game boss. After I beat him, the fight after him was cake. No other game has caused that kind of anxiety for me when facing an NPC in a duel or fight. Deathstroke comes close but only for the theatrics..
