My grandmother (self taught in the 20's) used to play this on the piano and it was amazing . I can still hear her red fingernails clicking on the keys as she played. Thanks for this.
Hi Phil This is a terrific version of a classic jazzy tune. Thank you for mapping it out and explaining it so carefully. You pass from the simple to the more complex version with ease. Great stuff! Regards from your Gran Canaria fan club
When you played it through in the beginning I though there's no chance I'll ever be able to learn that but once you broke it down, well, maybe... I'll have to give this one a go.
I am not advanced enough to play this yet, but you explain everything so clearly, I understand. I will learn the simple chords like you recommend. Then slowly learn more. It may take a while, but i enjoy learning as well as playing. Thank you for another great video. 😊🎶
I really enjoyed this arrangement. I've played this song for years, in F of course, and have worked out a very snappy rhythm arrangement for it. I never worked out a chord melody part for it, and I think this one is perfect. I particularly liked your rhythm fills in bars 4, 8, 28, and 22, at the end of the 4-bar sections of D7 and G7. I thought they really punched the song forward, but I wasn't getting it. My right hand was never in the right place when I hit those bars. Since finger picking is not my first choice for chord melody technique (usually thumb) I was not set up for the up strums when they came. Then I got it when I tried it finger style. PLAYER'S TIP: Finger pick this as Phil suggests and you'll hit Phil's rhythm parts in perfect time, as they were written. I agree that there should be flexibility and variation in fills like this, but these work very well. I suggest that everyone try them first.
This is great - thank you! I’ve noticed you don’t promote your Patreon site in these public videos. (Maybe it’s an English thing.) I couldn't play it that fast when I started learning it:-) It'll come!
Reminds me of when I was 6 or 7 years of age, back in 1970/71 and my dad took my brother and I to see The Harlem Globetrotters at Wembley Pool.
Excellent tutorial Phil - hugely helpful, and much appreciated! Many thanks!
Thanks Phil.Love it and well explained!
