I've fished Crystal River many times. Reds, trout, shark, cobia, and scallops like you wouldn't believe, but I've never pulled a shallow water grouper out. I see Captain Jimmy Nelson do it all the time and it makes me so jealous, and now seeing you do it makes me want to get out there and get some gag action!
I live in Crystal River and am painfully aware of these shallow water grouper. I say “painfully” because I only recently started grouper fishing and don’t have numbers. Many of the local guides have hundreds of these rock piles marked and that’s the key. Guess I know what I’m doing next scallop season.
on the left coast, guys catch shallow water grouper in Mexico on surface irons, with 80lb leaders, and even steel leaders to avoid break offs. Same style of surface fishing that we do for yellowtail (amberjacks)
Everyday im checking for new videos on your channel, really awesome stuff! Every adventure seems fairytaly looking from the Netherlands here! Awesome graphics, good materials and more than qualified fisherman. Did i see Bill "Captain Hollywood" Muniz in the intro there? Can you point me the video where you take him fishing? Thanks!
We've been catching mutton snapper that are hitting our live ballyhoo on top water I dont see any reason why they wouldn't hit a top water plug. i'm gonna try it next time
Yes it's year round... typically the hotter months require live or cut bait close to the rock... the colder months fish tend to be more aggressive and like going after plugs or if u still use cut or live bait they'll feed further away from the rock.. also another reason people use plugs during the colder months is because there is less grass
Those grouper remind me of smallmouth bass on steroids! They fight like a fish twice their size! Even their body shape and fin arrangement look like a smallmouth just bigger.
He's one of the spearboat captains on Wicked tuna! I dont like the guy, fishing is all about the rods and reels, not playing darts with fish;) can you name the braid youre using on all the videos? The blue/white one? Thanks!
it aint fishin if youre using braid thats 50lbs and a leader thats 80 pounds when the fish your catchin are 15 pounds at best. Dont make much sense to me.
Second favorite episode. The dock grouper fishing episode is my first. Good job.
Agreed! Absolutely amazing.

Also as far as tackle is concerned, it looks like you're throwing about a 6000 size Clash. What about the rod though? Medium Heavy Fast Action?
Carnage II rod (CARBWII4080S70) 7'0" 40-80lb rod
Great thanks, Captain!
don't forget about tarpon and pompano and sheepshead.
I ran into jimmy one day about 20 miles out of there. He lost his anchor and was seeing if we had a spare he could borrow lol
Dude that guys the man. What a wicked few spots he put you on.

+technineman1996 Thanks for watching!
great job George 👍👍👍👍
That looks like an absolute blast
What model Penn rod are you using at 9:15 ?
Absolutely awesome!
I would love to see some bombastic bass fisherman get schooled by a chunky grouper!
That stutter after the ad...hahah! Good fishing! Its amazing !
There are springs in this area grouper stay in, in the winter time
Colors used by any chance? And could the regular sized crystal minnow yozuri be used and if so what should hooks be bumped up to on either size?
Don't get stuck on color. Depth, size, and structure are way more important than color
i cant wait to get mmy little boat out there
How much fish did you get I wasn't keeping track
the best fishing change in world
thank you!
Are they finding these grouper year 'round this shallow or just colder months?

Fantastic episode! never seen grouper hit surface lures live before!
+Dimitrios Chariskos Thanks for watching!
Should have thrown a fly with some sink-tip line for them. That would have been a brawl!
Like giant bass fishing!

6000 or 8000 reel?
grouper in under 10ft. CRAZY
now this episode has me speechless
+Mason Dyer It had us speechless too!
we can be thankful for no more gill nets

If i wouldn't have seen this on video i wouldn't have believed you. thats crazy
Man I’ve caught keepers with a live shrimp in 5 ft of water right outside of the channel. It’s really insane
Come grouper season they’ll be offshore. Lol
Can't figure out why these videos don't get more views. Maybe they need a hot chick.
😍😍

Spiderwire blue camo
what are you talking about this guy is not on wicked tuna at all. hes a local guide out of crystal river fl and one hell of a captain.
Crystal River_REDFISHxSLAYER thanks for the clearification:)
no problem man. hes one of the youngest capt we have and one of the best ones as well. also dont forget to check out my channel and scribe as well.
Reggae music doesn't work in Crystal River.

What size reels?
Try catching a 20” grouper on a bass outfit. Ain’t gonna happen.
