  • With my kayak in the bed of my truck, I drove eight hours to Crystal River, Fla., with one goal in mind -- to guide myself to a snook, a fish I've been dreaming about catching since I lived in Central Florida in the early 1990s.
    Was the trip worth the effort? Check out the video for all the details!

    We went down there last fall, amazing trip. Kids could see the manatees and turtles and the trout/snook/mangrove fishing was outstanding. It will be a recurring destination from now on.

      Also if you go back a matrix shad on a twist lock weighted swimbait hook was the ticket for me to get in the cover and not get weeded or snagged. Big change for a south MS guy but the jig head was a no go.

    What a beautiful setting sunrise for this occasion. Thanks for taking me along for this I just caught my personal best this past week down around Good land Florida. That's a nice one. Caught 4 on Thursday. All of them over Slot. Snook are a big deal, even for us down here. Always exciting. That leader is not too heavy. Seems about right. I was using the exact same line and it handled the larger Snook really well. Nice job living that dream. Yep, the Tides down here are tricky. I've gotten to where I ignore the tides and just fish Wow, that was a beauty of a jump. Now you've caught a Snook. What do you think? 36?

    From Louisiana many trips to catch snook Sanibel Island brought boat and used boats at Tarpon Bay inside the island. Big trout and grouper also. Red pass there has 1/2 million tarpon every year. The golf course at South Seas Planation Resort full of snook.

    Fun stuff, now you have to plan a trip further south for some "BIG SNOOK".

    For bigger snook In CR I would focus on points with rock and close proximity to deeper water. Those bigger fish like to be comfortable and don’t want to move far when the tide drops.

    That's awesome! I worked down a bit further south of there near Ft Myers a few years back and got into smaller snook and baby tarpon. Like you said, the locals were probably laughing, but I was pumped to catch those species. I was there in the "winter" so didn't have a chance at bigger fish, but still, catching a species we don't typically have the chance to target is so exciting, especially doing it on top wadda, bruh! Love it!

    I lived in Ocala, Florida area for 17 years.
    I didn't have a boat for saltwater so didn't get to get around much,, but the shoreline from
    Homosassa area all the way up to the Cedar Key area is loaded with little creeks and inlets to fish!
    In particular the area were the Cross Florida Barge Canal was started. There used to be a road that you could drive all the way out to the point, but they've changed that now from what I've heard,, but the fishing there in the dug out canal is phenomenal! It's located just south of Yankeetown

    I’m definitely not local, I just go to college in Sarasota, but my favorite couple baits for fishing in and around the mangroves are a topwater walking bait, a soft fluke, and a shrimp imitation like a DOA or Vudu. Paddle tails are also very popular. With those couple of profiles, you should be pretty much set in my experience

    Great video Todd, I would love to catch a snook. Are they a good eating fish or more of a sports fish?

    • @MarshManMasson
      @MarshManMasson  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never eaten one, but I hear they're excellent. Florida has a really limited season on them. I didn't even bother to look up the specifics because I knew there was no way I would keep one. Too valuable to me as a sport fish

    Use a white pearl fluke with a unweighted worm/ewg hook 4/0!

    • @MarshManMasson
      @MarshManMasson  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You throw that into the mangroves?

    • @kristquinones4595
      @kristquinones4595 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, texas rig it as if you were bass fishing. The only difference is that if you are targeting snooks, you can use a faster cadence. Works amazing in the mangroves and flats!

  • @redfishreilley
    @redfishreilley ปีที่แล้ว

    Only a local and few outsiders know the best fishing in Florida is inside grouper fishing. Grouper like red fish are born in marsh and live there until big then move out to gulf. Catching these 2 to 10 # grouper are like catching a bass on Steroids.
