    I've been watching these videos for an hour. I used to spend every waking moment on my fish hobby. Years passed, life happened and it went on the back burner. Now my youngest son, 11, has shown a huge interest in the hobby. I ordered him 3 tanks, to arrive in a week. He's starting small. 10 gal, 7.5 gal and 2.5 gal. Maybe a beta, shrimp, tetras etc...Watching these vids has been an inspiration. It might be time to rebuild my own tank. It's just like riding a bike I suppose. The video of you missing your rays, brought back memories of my some of my own favorite fish. Thank you.

    Ugh. I'm so glad I started fish keeping. It's honestly the best thing I could have done for myself in a very long time. Endless amounts of things to learn about the hobby and yeah, it can be stressful, but caring for my fish friends has helping with my anxiety disorder a lot in the past few weeks.

      I suffered from bipolar disorder and my socialcworker commented that he had wondered why i suddenly seemed calmer and more stable...then he figured out...it was those darned fish..not sure if it was the bubbles or the hours or getting me into a schedule or what....maybe a combonation of them...but it helped to make my life better!

    I agree on your opinion on water parameters. I visited a discus breeder decades ago who uses tap water and does not measure hardnes and ph level but his breeding program is one of the most successful I have ever seen.

    A very informative video. Just one thing... I think you mean "parameters" rather than "perimeters" when you speak of water consistency. I recently purchased 10 Red Melon discus from 3 to 5 inches from Wattley and am going to try my hand at fish breeding after a 50 year hiatus from the hobby.

  • @VWmachine
    @VWmachine 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    For breeding Discus I started with 7 2.5 inch snakeskins, before that I had over a year experience keeping stunted ones I bought from a LFS (didn't know they were stunted at the time). Used water straight from the tap for daily 100% water changes, no need for letting the water age. With-in a year 3 of them where at over 6 inches and end up with 3 pairs. All three pairs started laying eggs in the 75 gallon tank they were in. I can' t remember my water parameters but think the PH was in the 7s, and water hardness was high. One particular pair laid eggs weekly. The eggs never hatched. They would protect them and in three days all the eggs would become white, which at that point they would eat the eggs and then start over. I was under the impression that due to high PH and water hardness the outer shell of the eggs would become too hard for the frys to hatch and needed to invest in an RO system to bring water hardness down and make it soft in order for the eggs to be fertilized and hatch. I end up having to sell the fish and tank soon after due to life circumstances. I'm surprised that your fry hatched in water straight from the tap with above 7 PH and high hardness. You did not use any RO water at all? Whats your water hardness?

    I love the part talking about consistency and ideal. The first six months I kept fish, I chased after the perfect PH (7.0) and somehow always managed to get it very high or very low instead. Now, I leave it be unless it gets lower than 6.8 or higher than 7.4. Unfortunately, about 8 months out of the year where I live the PH is far too high. I measured it one time during the winter and it was 8.8! For several weeks last year, I had lethargic fish who were acting very off and I couldn't figure out why for the longest time. Then I tested the PH and found out that it was 8.6 and realized. I had a trio of swordtails, several guppies, two angelfish, and two catfish and a pleco.

    I got some discus, I was always told they are hard fish to keep, which they are not. For about 4 weeks my discus were breathing very quickly 1st time I noticed I tested the water and I had ammonia spike because the pleco in my tank was creating a lot of waste so 3 days in a row I did 40/50 % water change and removed the pleco into my big tank and also bought a better filter. For the following 3 weeks they were still breathing rapidly but water parameters were perfect, after some further research I found that if my temperature was to high it could cause them to breath quickly so I dropped the temp down from 30 to 26 degrees. Problem solved they have now been happy for a few months, these are some of my favourite fish super inquisitive.

    One question: Are you against feeding the fry baby brine shrimp or was it just a matter of convenience since you made your own food and didn't want to go through the trouble of hatching brine shrimp every day?

    A light-colored painted background and bottom definitely helps the discus feel calmer, which helps them breed more easily. If illuminated, it also reflects some of the light and helps the fish's color pop!

    Finally some youtube that explains my FAVORITE aquarium fish. I just loooove them. I went through the hard way, i bought filters for my tap water that made the water into what the discus prefered, it drove my head in but then i realized that the water in the aquarium shop didn't even meet their "needs" as explained by the store owner. :) I'm buying my own house and i will definatley make a discus fishroom :D
