People do not realize how important this film is to Shatner's career. This was the first time he intentionally parodied his hammy over the top acting style (and I say that as the biggest Shatner fan in the west coast.) and made fun of himself. This film and Start Trek II coming out the same year made 1982 a very important year for Shatner.
Trek II actually contained some of his finest acting as Kirk. The look on his face when he sees Spock’s chair empty and flees from the bridge speaks a thousand words.
The door scene had the entire movie theater laying on the floor over here in Germany as well. Believe it or not, the German dubbing turned out pretty darn good, now that I've seen the scene in English for the first time. Shatner's German voice is so good, he'd probably wish it was his. ^^
The gag about the prop with no function is brilliant. There are several videos about that specific prop, has shown up in many movies and shows, love the parody of it, particularly from Shatner

There have been a number of special effects props that kept showing up in various movies. Movie-goings had named this one "the blinky red thing" long before it showed up in Airplane 2 -- that might be the reason for the blinking dialogue. After all these decades, the only other appearance I can remember was in "The Last Starfighter" (though that was released two years later).
Best part was yet to come, Shatner at his most Kirk-like outside of any Star Trek movie: "Oh, cut the bleeding heart crap, will ya? We've all got our switches, lights, and knobs to deal with, Striker. I mean, down here there are literally hundreds and thousands of blinking, beeping, and flashing lights, blinking and beeping and flashing - they're *flashing* and they're *beeping.* I can't stand it anymore! They're *blinking* and *beeping* and *flashing!* "Why doesn't somebody pull the plug!" "Sir! Pull yourself together sir!" "I'm alright. I'm alright. Alright, Striker!"
Just when you think Airplane (II) has run out of ideas, they come up with this gem. I normally can only watch a movie once. Airplane I and II are two of the few movies I can see over and over again.
Shatner's delivery of the line "No tower?" is absolute genius. The intonation, his facial expression, his entire bearing is incredible. He is a truly amazing man.

Back in the 80s when I wire-wrapped a mechanical keyboard to use with my ZX80 I was thinking of building a panel of randomly flashing lights just to make my setup more computer-ish (The ZX80 was amazing as a 'personal computer' for its time, but even fans had to admit it didn't look too impressive - even with the black lines printed on the case as pretend cooling vents). Flashing lights and reel-to-reel tape storage devices was all you need for a 'computer' lab vibe in 50s-80s SF ;)

Is it weird that the scene "All I know is that these red lights keep moving back and forth" gets even funnier over time when you realize that that is "The most important thing in the Universe". That single prop with the blinking neon tubes was used in virtually every major SciFi production for almost three decades. Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, Every cheesy B movie ever made. It's become legendary. It was a rental prop that rarely if ever spent a day in its warehouse so often was it used.
As well as all the ones people love, I always thought the voice activated doors was superb, especially when Shatner pauses the other guy to do a really short 'shh'.
Because the people who made these arent doing a lot of films anymore if any at all ,everything is a rehash or a retread of old stories Hollywood has run out of ideas

You may enjoy this kind of humor but the younger generation that grew up on South Park and Family Guy that has crude jokes at the expense of others wouldn't. Pretty hard to make comedy these days. Airplane is smart and subtle. It has pop culture references and social commentary of that era. What do we have? A world dominated by corporations like Facebook, TH-cam, celebrities and political correctness. Where you cant joke about race and gender or religion because you immediately piss off a certain group of people who harass you until you are destroyed.

The "I pulled his record" gag is an oldie but goodie. In the Marx Brothers' "Duck Soup", the evil Ambassador Trentino has Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho) followed by his spies, Chicolini (Chico) and Pinkie (Harpo), who report their findings (or more accurately, lack of same) to him. When the ambassador asks "Did you bring me his record?", Harpo pulls out an LP, throws it in the air and promptly shoots it like a skeet with a pistol, smashing it into smithereens. Chico pulls a cigar from the humidor on the ambassador's desk, presents it to Harpo and says "And the boy gets a cigar".
The worst part is that once I saw the orange light thing (1:45), I wasn't able to unsee it when I started getting into Star Trek. seriously, they used it what feels like every other episode I believe even going into Voyager and even Enterprise. I'm re-watching Next Gen. and have already seen it a few times.
It was in episodes of MacGuyver, Airwolf and many other shows. I forget but it might be in a TOS and TNG as well. It still exists and is available to rent for shows wanting some random sci-fi looking device in the background.

I saw Airplane 2 at the movies and the scene where William Shatner opens the door got the biggest laugh during the entire movie.
I can attest to that also. Including ME! 😂 Shatner was a riot.
I personally love the voice activated doors. My brother and I still do this but once in a while. He’s 45 and I’m 53. Lol.

I think there was a rule during the 80s and 90s that this needed to be in every science fiction show/movie lol Especially Star Trek.
That was funny because that prop has been in every Star Trek series, starting with TOS. In fact there are several props in this clip that were in TOS.
It's only a prop if an actor interacts with it. If it's just in the background it's part of the set.
This prop is still in the inventory of one of the largest prop houses in Hollywood (and it's available for rental).

Love it. Makes me very nostalgic watching these. The kind of comedy I grew up with. Had these on VCR. A classic that has aged well and is still funny.

The prop with the red lights going back and forth was previously used in Star Trek II, and it was later used in The Next Generation.
If there wasn't an Airplane! people would remember Airplane II as the greatest comedy of all time. I remember the checking in dog scene the best, lol.
Best scene in the movie IMO. Lol never realized he said “they should hit our atmosphere...” even after 25x watching this growing up i still find another hidden joke.
In the outside shot of the base, at night of course, did you notice the crickets chirping.

2022 there's a half a dozen Star Trek shows on TV, yet this understands Star Trek more than any of those shows currently do.

The "I pulled his record" gag is an oldie but goodie. In the Marx Brothers' "Duck Soup", the evil Ambassador Trentino has Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho) followed by his spies, Chicolini (Chico) and Pinkie (Harpo), who report their findings (or more accurately, lack of same) to him. When the ambassador asks "Did you bring me his record?", Harpo pulls out an LP, throws it in the air and promptly shoots it like a skeet with a pistol, smashing it into smithereens. Chico pulls a cigar from the humidor on the ambassador's desk, presents it to Harpo and says "And the boy gets a cigar".

The worst part is that once I saw the orange light thing (1:45), I wasn't able to unsee it when I started getting into Star Trek. seriously, they used it what feels like every other episode I believe even going into Voyager and even Enterprise. I'm re-watching Next Gen. and have already seen it a few times.
It was in episodes of MacGuyver, Airwolf and many other shows. I forget but it might be in a TOS and TNG as well. It still exists and is available to rent for shows wanting some random sci-fi looking device in the background.
And the wall behind it looks like the set of TNG
