    Bettman became commissioner in 1993, the last time a Canadian team won a Stanley Cup. Coincidence? I think not!!!

    If there was truly a level playing field, then the chances of a Canadian team winning the Cup would be 7/31 (and starting this year, 7/32). In other words, if you had one die that had 31 sides (or this year 32), then over a long period of time, a Canadian team would come up 7 times every 31 (or 32) rolls. Now, there's been expansion since 1993, so we have to take that into account, as follows:
    1994 -1999: 26 teams, 6 Canadian teams. Canadian Cup win: 6/26, 23.08%. American Cup win: 76.92%, for each year
    2000 : 27 teams, 6 Canadian teams. Canadian Cup win: 6/27, 22.22%. American Cup win: 77.78%
    2001: 28 teams, 6 Canadian teams. Canadian Cup win: 6/28, 21.43%. American Cup win: 78.57%
    2002-2011: 30 teams, 6 Canadian teams. Canadian Cup win: 6/30, 20.00%. American Cup win: 80.00%
    2012-2016: 30 teams, 7 Canadian teams (Atlanta moves to Winnipeg). Canadian Cup win: 7/30, 23.33%. American Cup win: 76.67%
    2017-2021: 31 teams, 7 Canadian teams. Canadian Cup win: 7/31, 22.58%. American Cup win: 77.42%
    So, the way probability works over a number of dice rolls like this is as follows. Let's say you're rolling a die 3 times, and you want to know what the probability is that you do *not* roll a 6 on any of those rolls. So the probability of rolling a 6 is 1/6. But the probability of rolling *not* a six is 5/6. To *not* roll a six with dice rolls is 5/6 times 5/6 times 5/6, or 57.87%. That means 42.13% of the time, you will roll at least one 6.
    For no Canadian team to have won the Cup since 1993, again assuming that the results are completely random, then we take the probability of an American team winning the Cup for each year, and multiply them all together. Starting in 1994.
    That gives us: 76.92% x 76.92% x 76.92% x 76.92% x 76.92% x 76.92% x 77.78% x 78.57% x 80.00% x 80.00% x 80.00% x 80.00% x 80.00% x 80.00% x 80.00% x 80.00% x 80.00% x 80.00% x 76.67% x 76.67% x 76.67% x 76.67% x 76.67% x 77.42% x 77.42% x 77.42% x 77.42% x 77.42% x 77.42%.
    All that equals a probability that no Canadian would win the Stanley Cup in those 29 years of (drum roll)
    0.0775%
    If this "parity" that Commissioner Bettman keeps talking about as a point of pride for the league were truly in operation, then the chances of all the Canadian teams going without a Cup in those 29 years would be 7.75 in 10,000. Or to use odds, roughly 1,289.7 to 1.
    I'm starting to feel a bit like Spock here.
    Of course, perfect parity doesn't exist. Of course, some teams are run better than others. That's going to happen. But you have to have some really incompetent teams to beat those odds...

      You messed up. There were 6 seasons of 7/30 teams being Canadian teams (the Thrashers moved to Winnipeg prior to the 2011-12 season so there was that season, 12-13, 13-14, 14-15, 15-16, and 16-17. You only multiplied by 76.67% 5 times. You then for some reason multiplied by 77.42% 6 times when there have only been 4 completed seasons of 7/31 (17-18, 18-19, 19-20, 2021).
      The actual number is still very low, 0.0992% or 9.92 out of 10,000. Or to use odds, roughly 1,008.5 to 1. If an American team wins this year it'll be very close to what you had (you basically tacked on an extra season in there) and would be rounded to the same number.

    It's pretty simple. There's a salary cap and Canadian tax is ridiculously higher than American. So basically free agents don't want to sign with Canadian teams and the homegrown players want more money to compensate for the higher tax they will get hit with. All while that goes against the cap hit. Want to make it fair? Make the cap hit the salary AFTER taxes. At least the richer Canadian teams can give players endorsement deals and they can make money in those big markets, but the poorer Canadian teams have such a small window to win unless you have players that really buy into the system and want the cup over the bag.

    You can make the argument that since 1989, only 5 teams have won a Stanley Cup WITHOUT having a Norris caliber Defenseman (or a Hall of Fame Defenseman) on the team:
    - 2017 Penguins (Kris Letang missed playoffs)
    - 2006 Hurricanes
    - 2004 Lightning
    - 1996 Avalanche (Adam Foote never won a Norris and not in Hall of Fame for some reason....)
    - 1990 Oilers
    The three guys without Norris Trophies; John Carlson, Alex Pietrangelo, and Kris Letang are all locks for the Hall of Fame.

    I'm surprised nobody thought of calling out the 2004 goal that nobody saw from Calgary. That to me is the biggest conspiracy in recent hockey Stanley Cup history. I say that puck was in. Parallax view or not. I think New Jersey had something similar happened to them. But eh... it's hockey and history. Wouldn't be hockey without a little controversy. Even penalties are subject to interpretation sometimes and still divide fans. I'm a habs fan. Before you say I like Calgary. And I've lived in Edmonton. Calgary rivals.. so definitely not bias towards that "goal not goal"

    The real answer is that Canadian teams have a disadvantage because of higher taxes. Players want more money when they sign with a Canadian team, and are way more likely to sign with a team in a city with less taxes, for the same contract. The salary cap needs to be adjusted for taxes, then Canadian teams would start winning the cup.

You got to remember though from 1927 when the NHL was official to 1993 of the 66 Stanley cups awarded canadian-based franchises won 41 cups. The US teams won 25. From 1956-1993 Canadian franchises one out of the 37 Stanley cups awarded 27-10. Post 93 3 franchises have repeated as champions. Pre-93/13 franchises repeated with three of them winning at least four in a row and a total of five with a minimum of three. Canadian teams pulled the feet eight times U.S teams 5. I'm going to try to make a point, pre 1993 21 teams 2:1 players stayed on the teams longer. Go back every 10 years from 93 and it's always been 2:1 all the way back to the original six. Every year a different team wins nowadays players play for three or four teams in their career and now it's 3:1. 25 u s teams 7 Canadian. American teams have better odds to draft the better players because they have more draft picks. 30 years ago you think that Edmonton oilers of the '80s could even be a roster now. The Montreal Canadiens basically started farm systems they had a huge advantage. The Detroit Red wings owner didn't care about winning he just wanted to make money that's why Toronto has won a cup since 1967 because Harold Ballard could put a team that wins two games a year and be the most profitable team in the NHL. All Canadian teams should have one a cup by now but like I said the odds aren't in their favor

    Taxes. Making 8 million in Tampa is just as good as making 10 million in Toronto. So American cities can pay their players less which makes for better teams under the salary cap.

  • @jamiesucie2685
    @jamiesucie2685 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The biggest reason is the unfair tax advantage many states have that those teams can use to their pleasure signing players who would command more in Canadian markets. States like Florida don’t have a state income tax so they can sign a $5mil player for $3.5 as that player would be making the same take home as if he had signed for $5mil in Canada. League parity is what is needed when it comes to the salary cap. Base cap for each team on the tax scale for which they reside in. Montreal would have the highest cap while Tampa and the Panthers would have the lowest cap space.

    • @ESUSAMEX

      As an American and a die hard Rangers' fan, I say Canada only has 7 teams and a horrible tax system. Instead of trying to change America's tax system to "equalize" the teams, Canadians should demand that Canadians pay less in taxes.

  • @timomajere
    @timomajere 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Real reason is quite simple.
    More teams in the NHL based in the United States and with talent from outside of Canada becoming more and more prevalent.
    Also More teams tends to homogenize the talent and with Canada's high tax rates and lesser value than the American dollar,
    I'm no economist but I think the logistics are rather evident.

    • @DanRaidersWarriorsSharksGiants
      @DanRaidersWarriorsSharksGiants 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming - have no income taxes.
      Since only Texas,Florida,Nevada and Washington have NHL teams as a free agent if you only cared about money those would be the 5 best teams to play for assuming the other teams offered the same amount.
      So if a player was offered 8 mill a year from the Stars.Lightning,Kraken,Knights or Panthers without an income tax and allegedly Canadian taxes are higher? if a player only cared about the money they would only look at or care about those 5 teams.
      Another factor is how cold Canada is which also applies to American teams that are more northern.When you making millions you can finally decide to move to the weather you prefer more year round.I live in Michigan now and it is soooooo cold vs California where many parts never see snow ever.

    • @DanRaidersWarriorsSharksGiants
      @DanRaidersWarriorsSharksGiants 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even if there was the same amount of teams in Canada and USA I still think that free agents wanting the most money will naturally look more at the 5 teams with no income tax. That puts the 27 others at a disadvantage right away.

    • @timomajere
      @timomajere 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DanRaidersWarriorsSharksGiants Yes. That is my point. More players want to live and work in the United States simply because the taxes are much more lenient ANYWHERE in the USA over ANYWHERE in Canada.
      Meaning it ALSO costs a LOT more to maintain a Hockey arena in Canada too. MUCH more fingers dipping into that pie.

    • @timomajere
      @timomajere 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DanRaidersWarriorsSharksGiants It simply costs more to run a team in Canada than in the United States because of out depreciated value of the dollar.
      And that is besides the taxes because we're reputed to be the Best place for Hockey, but that is sadly NOT so anymore as Rosters right now seem to indicate Canada only represents 40% or so of the total NHL attendance.
      Its harder as Canadians to be Hockey players and fans because the Government literally is sucking the people dry.
      This is a symptom of a much larger issue, and not the effect of one.
      Canada stands to lose 2 more NHL arenas in the next 5 years however there also stands to be MORE in the USA.
      That is JUST evolution of a business. Hockeys not a sport anymore .. its a business.
      Business is not so great in Canada.
      We LOVE hockey but when NHL tickets cost 3 digits and more EVEN IN NHL arenas in the United State, this is true.. Whos got that income these days?
      AS for the 'too cold' bit.. That's just silly. You DO know.. you NEED cold.. for Ice.. right?
      Canada has natural Ice.. USA does not unless you wanna lug your teams to Alaska.
      Canadas got hockey 24/7 365(6).
      USA does not.
      When your hockey seasons over, your arenas are converted to basketball and other indoor sporting events.
      In Canada, we have places that are hockey all the time.
      Hell i STILL play midnight hockey with my school guys every 2 weeks on Sundays.
      Agree or disagree, thats your opinion. Mine is what I stated.
      Canada has lost its prime players to the American dollar on American teams.
      That is why Canada has not had a cup.

    • @DanRaidersWarriorsSharksGiants
      @DanRaidersWarriorsSharksGiants 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timomajere Yeah I would be interested to see how much a Canadian or American playing for those 27 teams is taxed vs the 5 if they all made the same amount per year on the contract.
      Plus that taxes are more lenient for the rich here too.
      How does it cost more to run a team in Canada make a difference to the players? unless you mean it as Canada is not looking to get a new NHL team anytime soon?
      If you mean it as a Canadian who wants to be a pro that it is more expensive that applies to here too.A 14 or 15 year old can outgrow their uniform and unless its hand me downs that would add up faster vs the other 3 major american sports.I get what you are saying if it is clearly more expensive now vs 20 to 40 years ago with inflation/taxes.
      If there was the same amount of teams in Canada they would have won by now but as you say the finances/taxes is part of the reason they dont.
      I dont know why you disagree with my cold part though.Even Canadiens taught me that there is so much snow in parts they have to play/practice indoors which is the same as doing it in Florida.While you have ice in parts 24/7 365 I know many Canadians dont live in those parts either so that isnt a good counter argument.
      A Canadian player who plays for the Lightning or Panthers can wear shorts and a tank top to work and when they leave.While some Canadians and Alaskans can play on the ice outside year round if you were a millionaire who didnt like the cold that much you could envy the Canadian players in Florida who can just go to a rink whenever the same as rich americans and canadians do now anyway.
      That an arena is converted here is still on the arena and as you said its a business.From a money POV more Canadians would be better off to follow the example of Andrew Wiggins.When he wanted to play basketball in winter time if there was only hockey rinks that would suck.If the arena only cared about money you would just put on the sport you think would generate that or its child.Ice/roller skating Americans vs hockey/roller blading Americans to see who pays more? I have no idea but the most casual American will probably pick ice/roller skating I assume.
      The most hardcore obviously set something up inside their own house or you find a close enough local who will/has.Matthews grew up in Arizona FFS so obviously an American that wants it bad enough has some options to practice hockey year round.

    For everyone stating that the income tax is the reason why Canada hasn't won the Stanley Cup back yet, I would like to point out that Canadian teams have won the NBA Finals and two World Series in the time between the last Canadian Stanley Cup and now.
    Income tax in those two sports should have a greater impact on the team, since the Blue Jays and Raptors are the two Canadian teams in their respective sports. The Blue Jays only had the Expos as their only Canadian competition.
    If income tax truly prevented Canada from assembling winning teams, the Raptors and the Blue Jays should never have won at anything.

      1974, raped by refs to help grow a more violent version of hockey to an American audience. 1975, same thing as 1974. 1993: The worst single piece of officiating in the history of the sport. Hairboy Fraser and his no call on Gretzky when Wayne's illegal aluminium weapon cut Gilmour for 40 stitches. The NHL insults everyone's intelligence and tries to say the puck struck Gilmour. Why ? They were trying to market the game in the US, and Gretzky was the NHL's poster boy. A major for highsticking would've given the Leafs a PP in overtime, and with that lineup, a goal was a certainty. This is only 3 examples, there is at least one for every year the Leafs made the playoffs. My message to the NHL is this : Ballard and Clancy are both dead. Give it a rest and stop punishing the team for when they were both alive, and not afraid to call it for what it is : a joke funded with American money.

Gary Bettman is probably the best commissioner in sports. The biggest problem in Canada is the provincial government do not want to fund arenas. Huge money comes from those boxes and from TV contracts. How many people are watching TV in Quebec? Hamilton could get a team but they need a brand new arena and a good solid owner. The Calgary Flames owner should pay for that damn arena himself or they're going to lose their team

A fun fact for you Ken, there are more people in the Metro New York City area than the entire COUNTRY of Canada.
