    I live in an apartment with a small balcony, thus -- no garden. But I find it to be therapeutic and uplifting to see how much you love your garden and the joy you get from it. I can live vicariously through you with respect to all things garden! :-)

      Have you thought about roses in pots? You can grow them up an obelisk, or train them to go across your balcony. Not to mention climb any wall space you have. You could have a great little rose balcony!

      @@ElliotNMatt I think I might try that this Spring - thanks for the suggestion! I did have a potted plant out there last summer and adding potted roses would be lovely. A nice little outdoor project for myself. :-)

    Your roses are so very beautiful! Right now, we are getting ready for a very bad cold snap(artic blast) for over the weekend and into the early part of the week. They have said the wind chill could go way below - 3 degrees F. Seeing warm weather ( warmer than here)is nice. I always love your garden! Take care and stay safe!

    Great tutorial! I have some David Austin roses too and have been looking at them and wondering. We’ve been having some mild weather lately so I may just give it a go today.

    Thank you! I ordered my roses from David Austin. I just got a message that they would be delayed, but will still arrive for the correct planting season in my zone! In my catalog, I see that their roses are bred in Shropshire 💐 Have you ever done a video of the David Austin home?

    Elliot I forgot to prune my roses and I’m in virginia and we are now in our coldest months in fact we have snow. I am not sure I can prune now. They are just knock out roses and one is a yellow climber. They have some small red buds already though. Do you think I can still prune and not kill them. They are ginormous!

    • @ElliotNMatt
      @ElliotNMatt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do it a few months before they would normally spring into life. If you prune them in snow be careful not to prune too hard.

    I need to get out and prune my roses as well. Just waiting for a nice day. Elliot could you start a new rose bush from clippings? Put them in water with rooting powder?

    • @ElliotNMatt

      @@ElliotNMatt I haven't either, but maybe I should give it a try this spring and see what happens.

    • @ElliotNMatt
      @ElliotNMatt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only thing is the roses you buy from DA are grafted onto root stock so if growing from cutting the rose you grow may not flower or grow as vigorously.

    Thank you for this video! Last spring I planted 'Munstead Wood' in a pot. I bought it from David Austin Roses in a fairly small pot. The growth was fairly weak and leggy. Should I prune back harder to promote stronger growth? It's the first time I've grown a rose in a pot. Thanks very much! Love your feline companion!

  • @SingingCrowie
    @SingingCrowie 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for a nice video just in time. How large are your containers? I have noticed that the individual rose containers look kinda small. David Austin recommends 60l (45x45cm) containers and they are ginormous and very expensive where I live. Do you reckon I could do with smaller containers? Also what is your opinion on terracotta? I see you have a lot of them but doesn't it make you water them (even) more often? Also what do you do about the watering if you have to go away for week? Thank you in advance for your insight!

  • @sharonwebb945
    @sharonwebb945 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I noticed your shrub roses are quite leggy lanky n bendy. Is that by choice rather than shaped and rounded. Also now pruned will the shrubs grow more rounded now?

    • @ElliotNMatt
      @ElliotNMatt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prune the shrub roses back to near stumps so I don’t really ever ‘shape’ them. This however suits me in terms of it being in a raised bed border as I quite like the height of the straight new growth. That’s not to say in the new garden I may not try shaping.
