Small world, i was in 2nd Fareham sea scouts based in lower quay. we rowed down the Thames in a gig right under Westminster bridge, an amazing day. I now live in Waverly rd, Portsmouth.You may recognise my picture. im hunting for a narrow boat atm, although i doubt id be in Fareham as i lived there for 20 odd years. I would say don't a masters ticket because you are owners but insuring it be a little excessive. I never need a masters ticket. I would get someone teach you, like nav and winds.
I used to have a barge which was much smaller, Bertskipeje spelling ? which I had a top put on at Jones on the Thames. I bought it in Holland and motored it across the Channel Very foolish!! beyond very foolish and it fitted a grand union lock, it was moored up in Rickmansworth. It was sadly not easy to move as it was high at the front and scared narrowboats, The top wheel house had to be cut off - bridges !! and I built a lovely new one which folded. it had diesel heaters and funnily enough a Bedford engine . memories! I used to lecture at Fareham college much later.
Anne, I laughed when you said you weren't certain what you would do if he died first but you wouldn't leave the barge. The first thought that flashed through my mind was "a succession of younger male deck hands until you found a good fit!" If you follow up with you maritime regulatory body you shouldn't have problems obtaining the licenses you need. In place of steel balls I suggest a good bow thruster. So, question, as soon barge does it have an Engine? Technically in the U.S. barges aren't self propelled but require a tug to move them. But if this is your pipe dream, then sit down with blank paper and list everything required to make the dream come true. Then what steps would be required to complete each task. Then if one of those steps fail what's the backup plan to ensure completion. Pencil out the cost and what steps and sacrifices you have to make to successfully complete the tasks and make the dream come tree. Once you actually sit down and comit energy & effort to this you'll realise it's not such a pipe dream after all. Best of luck, Scott

i hope no British welders watched this and heard what you said about those Polish welders, as they aren't the best in the world, you have to remember this country was known for its ship building and the welders etc, just saying before any British welders take offence to what you said, loved watching the video though, i would have loved to have stayed on one of these, as I've only ever seen one Dutch barge up close and cruised passed one and that was on the Norfolk Broads last September at Gt Yarmouth just past the the yacht station
