Basenji. The Basenji is a hunting dog breed that is small in size. It is one of the few breeds that does not bark and is classified as a sighthound. This is a primitive breed. Its ancestors were thought to have been brought down the Nile by central African tribes, as depicted in ancient Egyptian and Babylonian art. These dogs are known for their intelligence, courage, and speed, and they are still used to drive prey into nets by tribes in modern-day Congo. The lack of barking is thought to be the result of selective breeding, as barking could attract enemies to tribal forest camps. These dogs impressed European settlers in Africa, but early attempts to import them were unsuccessful. They became popular in England and the United States in the 1930s. Basenjis were nearly extinct in the United States in the 1980s due to the Fanconi syndrome, a fatal genetic kidney disorder. To supplement the population, new Basenjis were imported from Africa. Fanciers looking for a smart, almost catlike house pet have remained loyal to the breed.
Adult Basenjis stand between 16 and 17 inches tall and weigh between 22 and 24 pounds. These dogs have a short coat and are slightly built, which helps them survive in the hot African climate. The breed is distinguished by its wrinkled forehead, erect, triangular ears, and a tightly curled tail set high on the back. The shape of its larynx differs from that of most other breeds, resulting in a yodel-like sound rather than a bark. Cleaning a Basenji's coat once or twice a week is all that is required. These dogs are known to be extremely clean, similar to cats, and do not have the typical dog odor. The Basenji's catlike characteristics extend to its temperament as well. It is inquisitive, self-reliant, astute, and obstinate. It gets along with everyone but isn't the most outgoing of dogs. It's generally good with other dogs, but its hunting instincts kick in when it's around non-canine pets. When it comes to strangers, the Basenji is reserved. Only its lack of barking detracts from its suitability as a watchdog. Its quiet nature makes it ideal for living in an apartment.
Training. Because of its stubborn and independent nature, the Basenji has low trainability. It is, however, an intelligent breed that responds well to consistent, but never harsh, training. It's an active breed that needs a good leash walk and an exhausting game or the freedom to explore in a safe open area.
