I just watched a video essay explaining that Arya was actually killed by the Waif and Arya is the Waif in disguise. Right before she leaves Bravoos she was called no one by Jagen Haggar but the Waif says she is Arya Stark of Winterfell. So the waif has become no one but is disguised as Arya Stark.

The Waif revealing herself after wounding Arya shows exactly her "weakness". She too feels like she's someone and not a no one, cause she wanted to tell Arya "Look at me. It was ME who killed you, not just a random old lady". That's not how a real no one would think nor would act.
As a matter of fact, it's exactly what Arya does later when killing Frey.

  • @mesmer3780
    @mesmer3780 3 ปีที่แล้ว +496

Theory: The Waif had become a mentally unstable and fanatical follower of the Many Faced God. She hated Arya so much because she knew that she was just using the Faceless Men to get the training she needed to kill the people on her list, and would leave the order once she got what she needed. To The Waif, this was an insult to her order and blasphemy, and she wanted Arya dead for it.
In reality, the Many Faced God was far more offended by The Waif's devotion, gatekeeping, and sadism, than by Arya's refusal to give up her true identity. To him, Arya was never a true Faceless Man, because she never stopped being Arya. Since she wasn't part of his cult she could not blaspheme against and him. This is why she was merely punished, instead of killed, when she "stole" Meryn Trant from him. But The Waif WAS at some point truly a "No One," who had fallen away and become a "someone" again, by becoming too obsessed with their religion, by holding a personal grudge against Arya, and by her sadistic enjoyment of suffering. She wasn't "playing" The Waif anymore, she had really become The Waif.
The Faceless aren't butchers; they do have their own set of moral codes. They will kill innocent or undeserving people, but they usually charge steep and often bizarre prices to do so, and sometimes they even refuse contracts. They often attempt to kill their victims quickly and painlessly. They are also very compassionate to the sick and dying, offering a way to end their lives easily and caring for their bodies after they die.
Jaqen H'gar was an ideal worshiper of the Many Faced God: He did not fanatically follow their religion, he didn't gatekeep, he wasn't angry that Arya was attempting to use them, he didn't hold any strong opinions one way or the other, he was kind and compassionate without motive, he respected other people as equals, he took life without pleasure in it. So he was used by the Many Faced God to correct The Waif's path. Jaqen pitted Arya and The Waif against each other, to teach The Waif that obsession, ego, rage, cruelty and fanatical obsession to The Many Faced God was the true blasphemy. Or to kill her in trying.
Is the person who was The Waif truly dead? Maybe. Maybe not. We saw "Jaqen H'gar" drink poison and "survive." Is he the original Jaqen? Or did another Faceless simply take his mask and step into his shoes? Perhaps the Faceless never really die, they just lose their favorite mask and get demoted to new identities. Or maybe the person playing The Waif really was killed, and her mask put on the wall like a retired jersey, and she's now doing time in whatever afterlife the Many Faced God provides for his people...

The faceless men "worship" death, but it is not a sentient entity. It s just death, not a "real" god. There s no statue or simulacrum for it either. They just follow a code. The waif is an orphan that agreed to become "property" of the faceless men in exchange for revenge i believe in the books and became an apprentice like arya. In the series it is clear that she is jealous of arya because jaqen favours her. She sees arya as a dangerous rival. She is obviously a psychopath that enjoys killing, maybe that's why jaqen prefers arya over her, she is not fit to be a faceless woman either, albeit for a different reason compared to Arya. She is more skilled in close combat than arya but gets outsmarted by arya who baited her to fight to the death in a situation of disadvantage and ultimately lost. I'm pretty sure this is all that there is to it.

She believed Arya was not truly committed and would never truly be "no one".
Arya was a "Lady". The high born were never "no one", only the lowest of society.
"You will never truly be one of us".
Every "no one" wanted to burn and disconnect from their miserable past, Arya would always be Arya and had a pleasant past and good memories of her life until the events that led to the story.
Arya was not a true believer, but a schizophrenic, 1/2 true believer, 1/2 not.
In this regard the waif was always correct.
George was writing Arya as history's greatest villains, being retold as the hero through the eyes of an endearing 12 year old girl.
Arya v Waif was Cain v Abel
Arya v ja'quen was Cyclops v Odysseus (No one is straight from Odysseus getting the Cyclops to call him "no one")
Arya in the lady Crain affair was Puck from Midsummer Night's dream
Arya v The Hound was "the Morrigan" vs. the Hound of Ulster from Irish mythology
Arya v Red Woman was Big Bad Wolf v Little red Riding Hood (What big eyes you have!!)
Arya v Walder Frey was Atreus v Thyestes (one of the oldest stories of western civilization, feeding him his sons)
      etc.
I believe George is writing the story to finish as Arya becomes the Gollum.'
      Arya/No One and Gollum/Smeagol
She will steal the ring of power (save her baby brother Bran) and the books will end differently than the show.
In this "Song of Ice and Fire", an aria is a strong solo in the opera outside the main storyline.
(While her sister IS the story line, Sansa is Stanza plus Sancha of Aragon and sansa is the key this story is sung to)
When she sails away Bran will be on the boat. (With the last surviving "others").

@@dignature123 I believe the first 4 seasons of GOT were the best literature to film ever done.
The three parts of the book were:
Westeros ( medieval - The Wars of the roses were moment when medieval turns to modern)
Essos (antiquity - The death of Cleopatra and the death of Marc Antony are when Hellenistic turns to Roman and The Roman Republic dies and the Roman Empire is born)
The Wall/North is The Lord of the Rings (The moment the age of Magic ends and the Age of Man begins)
Within the "medieval" you can see Robin Hood. Beric as Robin Hood, Thoros as Friar Tuck, the band of Brothers as Merry Men.
You can see the Borgias (Jamie as Ceasar, Sansa as Sancha, Tyrian as Giovanni, Cersei as Lucrezia, Tywinn as Alexander).
Will, the nightswatchman executed, George has admitted was William Shakespeare. Executing him was Richard of York (Ned), while watching was Edward IV (Rob), Edward V (Bran), Richard III (John), and George Planagenet (Theo).
      etc. etc.
Within Antiquity you can Athens fall into tyranny. Xaro as Solon, the warlocks as the Egyptian priests. You can see Spartacus, the slaves nailed to the cross.
      etc. etc.
Within The North you can see literature. Munity at Crasters was the Lord of the Flies. The travels to North with Jeor was Winnie the Pooh, Jeor, the old bear as winnie, John as Christopher, Sam as Piglet, Ed as Eeyore, Gillie and the child as Kanga and Roo.
      etc. etc.
      G. Martin has always said he steals his stories from everybody, he just changes the heroes and villains.
George rewrote antiquity, medieval, and LOTR and changed the heroes and the villains.

She was jealous from day one. Her 'training' was spiteful from the start. She was there first and then comes this highborn girl, one he took special interest in. Constantly calling Arya lovely girl, and being forgiving when Arya made mistakes. Yeah the waif was green with envy and hated that someone prettier, smarter, and noble born had the nerve to come into her territory. Was so glad when she died, I disliked the character.
Would like to say she was simply following orders but got to argue that point. If she was all about listening to Jacqen she would have done as he told. He said 'make sure she doesn't suffer'. She stabbed Arya in the stomach instead of slicing her throat. She meant for Arya's death to be slow and painful. This alone proved that her actions went beyond the Faceless and emotions ruled her hands. Arya should have carved out her lady parts and placed it in his bed, because she was acting like a jealous lover.

I hated it the moment Arya sliced the candle. The room was filled with darkness and voila! The Waif's head is already placed on that some sort of an altar. It should have been satisfying if they did a fist to fist or sword to sword combat and to see how Needle cuts off the Waif's head.

yes, intended anticlimactic scene..I think since we've seen much fighting between Arya and the Waif, they decided to cut it out, and just shortcut it to the scene with Jaqen, but I agree, I was disappointed myself during the actual screening of the episode.

You know what, I used to think this storyline was dumb, and I still do (mostly because Arya is so careless and that wound really should've gotten infected, but she got off scot free). But it's better than I remember. The two actresses seem to have good chemistry, and their fight scenes all in a row show a clear picture (Arya is never better than her with sight, but specifically got good at countering her while blind). I think previously I rejected this because I was hoping the House of Black and White would be a longer/more interesting plot and the waif is quite different from her book counterpart. Shame we never got to see Arya warging cats or whatnot.

Well-acted and the scenes were well-written but the arc was badly done from the books. In the books, The Waif wasn't (yet) an antagonist but fellow trainee and the Servants of the Many-Faced Gods were playing at the Game of Thrones themselves. Like a lot of what Martin wrote, unresolved or ignored by the producers as they neared the end of what Martin had published.
