As I sit here proud next to my boxed Castlevania Legends I am so happy to hear you speak praise of the game. I can still remember buying it with my mother at Target back when it was new. It leaped out at me right off the stand and I begged her to get it for me. My spoiled ass left happy that day.
While I never got into the series in its entirety, I do fondly recall the many impressive musical tracks. As you allude to, the notion of a portable, substantive gaming experience is a relatively new concept in the gaming world, and it has evolved rapidly over the years. At the time, these offerings were beyond impressive in their own right. The Gameboy itself was a revolutionary device, and it’s no hyperbole to note that its direct competition were indeed far inferior platforms like Tiger Electronics handheld offerings. Nice retrospective, as per usual, thank you for your work!
CVA1 is a rage quitting game if there ever was one, esp. with the autoscrolling levels and the whip downgrades with every enemy hit. Lots of cheap deaths as a result. Fortunately, CVA2 pretty much fixed all of the first game’s issues and is one of the best titles on the original Game Boy.
@@tartuffethesprywonderdog5883 "It doesn't get the hate it deserves." is a phrase you don't hear very often. I think, I will steal that from you and use it for... I don't know... The controls in Rockstar games?
The frame rate is a little choppy but being an early release I think it can be excused that there are some technical issues. The soundtrack is still great and maybe not as good as the second game I don’t think it is terrible by any means
@@matthewnikitas2904 Yes, you can certainly blame the overall sluggishness of the game on being a very early GB title. Regardless, I am still also not a fan at all of the whip downgrade mechanic or the ridiculous autoscrolling section in Stage 3 (IIRC), as stated in my OP.
I honestly really hated The Adventure because I found the controls rather sluggish in comparison to the NES games, and I found that Belmont's Revenge is everything The Adventure should have been. I don't remember a lot about my experience with Legends, but I do remember enjoying it more than the general public did.
Screw Igarashi. Canon in my collection. He is the one to blame for the downfall of the series, making it repetitive on all subsequent entries. I love SotN but in the end, it was him that made the series stale. Castlevania was an institution long before he came along. I do love some of his titles like Portrait but even that is just another of basically the same. Castlevania was always innovative and original, when he came along all that we got was more of the same until it killed the franchise. None of his titles are in my top 5.
And he was not the main director of SOTN to begin with. The real director was Toru Hagihara who also directed Belmont's revenge and Rondo of blood. His role in SOTN was like Aonuma in Ocarina of time.
@@carlosaugustodinizgarcia3526 True. It pisses me off when i hear people praising Iga like he made Castlevania great. He ended up being the worst thing to happen to it.
I love how Nintendo put some effort to deliver original installments of its better franchises for the Game Boy. Castlevania is no exception, and Kid Dracula is a blast. I think Castlevania Legends looks much inferior than the previous ones but being more on the simple side has its perks as well. Great video
ive been playing with the AOS randomizer lately to make it more interesting. it's not bad , if anyone wants to give it a shot. throws items, souls, books in the item pool
Oh man, so much to say here...Belmont's Revenge was my game growing up. Single parent family, not a lot of money, so when I got a Gameboy for Christmas, all I had was that and Tetris for a very long time. But that was okay, because what a killer game, I beat it over & over and could just about do it without getting hit. You're bang on about the GameBoy sound chip, I used to play through the whole thing just to listen to the amazing end theme. The whole soundtrack beats plenty on more powerful systems. The first Adventure came out just a few months after the Gameboy did, and the devs had no idea what they could do with it yet, how power draw would work IRL, etc. It really shows in how that engine chugs. That said, I played through it on the Collection a year or so back and it's alright, decent enough for me to have sat down & finished. And I do agree with you on the Tiger handhelds and similar efforts. I can't get the nostalgia for them, even in their heyday they were so limited and lacking.
"Castlevania the Adventure" was my very first CV game as a kid, so while it gets alot of hate nowadays, I still have a fondness of it, especially the music. I wish "Castlevania Legends" was included in the anniversary collection.
So good to see another Castlevania video from you Sega Lord X! You have a way of capturing that feeling of nostalgic that make me want to go back and play these games. I do have the Anniversary collection and I think I'm going to fire these up and go through them. Your video on Bloodlines had me going through that again and it was such a blast. It would be great if Konami makes and Anniversary Collection 2 with a lot of the other great Castlevania games.
Ha i find it ironic the Sega Lord X reviewing a Nintendo handheld game!! The Gameboy was quite simply a game changer and a revolution, very clever and very good for its time. It still fascinates me today how Nintendo used such a simple graphical interface to give so much. I know a lot of hate goes to Nintendo or "its for kids" but as with the other mobile gaming platforms they produce inc the switch and many of their games they really are diverse. Brilliant vid as usual, thanks
I think Nintendo deserves a lot of the crap they get because they were once able to take things like this and make it iconic. I don't think we'll ever see anything as iconic as the original game boy ever from anyone let alone Nintendo.
Totally agree, the early days of handheld gaming were not impressive including the GB for me. But once the color screens came out it changed my mind. Great work man.
I picked up Castlevania Legends at a garage sale a long while back. Had some sharpie on it and I didn't play it much. Now it sits in my Castlevania collection!
Belmont's Revenge is a masterpiece. I bought my Gameboy around 93 in a pawn shop that came with Castlevania The Adventure and Belmont's Revenge. I honestly don't remember owning anything else. I didn't need anything else.
The best way to play Castlevania: The Adventure is with the "CVA Quick Fix" hack, which improves your walking speed. It also comes with a patch for the colorized version of the game which is in Konami GB Collection Volume 1.

Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow are the best of the portable Castlevanias, in my opinion. Dawn made my top 100 games list - along with Symphony of the Night, of course.
GBA is so under appreciated. u can easily make the case that it was the last great hand held that nintendo released. the only reason u cant say its out right the best is because of how historically significant the original was.
It was definitely the penultimate game boy that's for sure. The fact you could play game boy, game boy color and GBA games was and still is really cool. I still have a DS lite that I use because it is still the best for DS GBA and game boy.
Nintendo DS entries are my faves, though Aria and Circle of the Moon on GBA were really good. Harmony had some fruity colors & visuals, but I finished it, too. Konami could make a shit ton of cash if they would continue releasing more of their classics in collections.
CVA was booty. There's no debating that. But it was a guilty of mine. Even after I got access to much better games, it always held a special place in my heart.
Sega Lord X, I enjoy ur videos. I give them a thumbs up every time. One of my favorite things about the Gameboy is the monochrome color. For those of you that don't know, Gameboy games can be emulated in monochrome using the Higan or the ares (lucia) Version 115 emulators. They're free and aspect ratio can be increased to 16:9 without any distortion. Have fun!
So, um, I still have my copy of Castlevania Legends with both the manual and box😳. I also have the Dracula X cartridge and it’s manual, which just the cartridge alone can be over $200

It's amazing to see some of the old marketing and see how little some of the advertising people thought of us kids at the time and how out of touch they were. From the impossibly-happy, annoying kid on the box of the TurboGrafx-16, to the Tiger Electronics actors who constantly move and spin, then spin some more, for no reason, because that what us gamers responded to then(or not) as opposed to actually wanting to see the games. All that spinning failed to communicate what they were going for. Of course, with the Tiger games, there wasn't much to see. I will say, the one thing Tiger understood is that there was an appetite for portable gaming. And that's where Nintendo came in. The Game Boy really was a big deal when it came out. I remember that a friend of mine got it early on and it was a huge step forward to see games similar to NES games on a portable machine. Once I had the chance to play the games, the lack of color didn't matter much. The first Castlevania Adventure was one of the first games I played on the system, and one of the first games I got for it later. I liked it a lot, but the slow speed and some other aspects made it frustrating after a while.
Only played the first one myself. While I don't particularly like, "Battle of the Holy" is such a great track. Easily in my top three tracks across the entire franchise.
Kid Dracula is one of my favorite Konami games and one of my favorite Gameboy games. And objectively it's from the best Gameboy games. It's a shame Konami didnt localized the first game for NES (thank goodness for fantranslations).
I just finished Belmonts Revenge today. Those last two bosses were a nightmare. I never liked Adventure even when I was kid. The music was the only thing it had going for it.
I'm a Mega fan on castlevania in general. Rondo is favourite game in existence. But the gameboy games are one an done games. The music is still good mind
Yeah, the vanilla Castlevania GameBoy titles were so sluggish. Luckily, there are game patches out there that speed up your walking speed (as well as not downgrade your whip when hit) to make the games a bit more forgiving and playable. I'm in the camp that just couldn't get into Castlevania Legends. I tried to like it, but it seemed like such a step back from Belmont's Revenge (which I still say is the best of the GameBoy titles). I agree that it is a shame there are a lot of classic WiiWare titles that aren't as easily playable (unless you still have your old console). I wish Nintendo would put old WiiWare games on the Switch eShop.
Belmonts revenge is boss. Ripe seeds is a brilliant piece of music, as is battle of the holy. Christopher gets virtually no recognition from the fan base as far as fan art and Belmont rankings go, and he deserves far better.
I like the box artwork of the first two Castlevanias on the GB a lot. The first game however I absolutely hate, there's nothing good about it. The second one on the other hand is one of my favorite GB games and has a great soundtrack, probably the best of any GB game.
Yep I one in the minority that like Castlevania Legends on the Gameboy. I actually got ti with the manual for less than $200 last year. Glad I picked it then, because it is pretty expensive now. lol Yeah I have all 3 Castlevanias with the manuals and custom hard cases for the Gameboy. As well as all with manuals and hard cases for the Gameboy Advance. And the DS versions complete. I also have the best video game to me. Akumajou: Dracula X: Rondo Of Blood on the Japanese PC Engine!
I like Castlevania Legends too, played it past year on EzIV emulator for gameboy. Stage design is not the best but still fun, and easier than the others.
Fantastic video! I own Castlevania The Adventure on GameBoy. Definitely not my favorite Castlevania game, but I appreciate it for what it did. I didn't know how much better Castlevania II Belmont's Revenge is. Since you spoke so highly of it, I'll try to buy a copy if I come across it. As for Castlevania Legends, it's ashame what happened with this game. I think it looks like a good game, but it seems like people either love it or hate it. Kid Dracula is very fun to play!

Everyone seemed to dislike that installment but I always loved it.
Castlevania II is also on the Eurpoean GB konami collection in GBC form
Castlevania II has the best music of any gameboy game in my opinion, impressive and beautiful head bangers
Yeah, the first game is awful. It doesn't get the hate it deserves because it's Castlevania and people have nostalgia for it.
100%. Adventure was just a slow playing slog. I hated the game as a kid. The second Castlevania was leaps and bounds better.
Belmont's Revenge is one of the best GB-Games ever - with one of the best Soundtracks too!
Great video
i still play all of these, including the GBA and DS ones, regularly
Lol i don't believe you
@@Dominicn123 I do. I heard, playing these games regularly is good for your health.
Circle of the Moon rocks.
ive been playing with the AOS randomizer lately to make it more interesting. it's not bad , if anyone wants to give it a shot. throws items, souls, books in the item pool
Dat GB Castlevania music, doe. "New Messiah and "Ripe Seeds" are top 10 tracks for the franchise IMO.
Welcome back Sega Lord!!!!, You were sorely missed and I hope you had the good time you was hoping for with family.
Many hours with these as a kid while waiting for my mom. Game Boy was way easier on batteries than my big Game Gear was
Ahhh castlevania on the go....🥰
Oh man, so much to say here...Belmont's Revenge was my game growing up.
Se termine de hacer el Castlevania resurrección en 5 CD edition special
Totally agree, the early days of handheld gaming were not impressive including the GB for me. But once the color screens came out it changed my mind. Great work man.
I picked up Castlevania Legends at a garage sale a long while back. Had some sharpie on it and I didn't play it much. Now it sits in my Castlevania collection!
"How about another question? Are Tiger games video games???"--James Rolf
They are bad. But Nintendo Game & Watches are great!
Belmonts Revenge is criminally underrated and deserves recognition. The game play for its time was pretty good and excellent controlling response.
Belmont's Revenge is best played in color in the European Konami GB Collection vol 4
0:16 - 0:36 and for whatever reason some company thought it would be a good idea to revive those things...
Why?... Just why?... Those Tiger Electronics handhelds were just awful.
@@vidlink as said by AVGN "outdated is something you never want to go back to"
@@marakarthegreat: It's one thing to be outdated as outdated can still be fun and entertaining but it's another to be so bad that it could be considered torture and criminal.
Apparently some people's nostalgia is thick enough to blind them to what these things actually were even now. I mean I don't have the best taste in the world but even I have not revisited those terrible things they were terrible then and they definitely are unbearably terrible now.
I've seen those Tiger games at Gamestop and Target.
I love Belmont's Revenge. What a fun game and a fantastic sound track. I think it was the first game I got when I was getting back into retro gaming.
It's always an enjoyable time watching your videos and your content
You're one of my favorite TH-cam content creators you always have such enthusiasm in your voice to talk about the subjects that you talk about you have a true passion for what you do and I think it's phenomenal I'm glad you're here! 👊
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu ds plays gb gbc and gba games too? 2ds?
@@rustymixer2886
Yeah the "wedge" 2DS is definitely my preferred method as well.
It just has a great feel to it.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu the easiest way i can describe gba is simply calling it snes2. that should say it all.
Castle vania games on the Gba are fun too
aria of sorrow and harmony of dissonance are great
Nintendo DS entries are my faves, though Aria and Circle of the Moon on GBA were really good. Harmony had some fruity colors & visuals, but I finished it, too. Konami could make a shit ton of cash if they would continue releasing more of their classics in collections.
@@TexasHollowEarth there busy with new graphical game's now
@@TexasHollowEarth i agree bro
That ost of the second one is 🔥🔥🔥
It really is. The fact they were able to make the game boy sound that good it's incredible still to this day.
Yeah, definitely. I'd rank it up there as one of the best original GameBoy soundtracks. That Cloud Castle music was one of my favorites! 😍
I also have the Dracula X cartridge and it’s manual, which just the cartridge alone can be over $200
Yeah it's weird that even the lesser Castlevania games are still valuable and prized even if they aren't particularly well liked.
Then again the retro market is absolutely ridiculous these days.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu the retro market is crazy. There’s a retro video game store in a mall by me, and they wanted $75 for Knights of the Round, and $120 for The King of Dragons, and they were both cartridge only😨
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu Even the common games are all fucked up! A store near me wanted $40 for a loose Zelda 1 cart....pretty sure I can get it for like half the price on Ebay lmao.
Lets get segalordx in the million subscribers share these videos with everyone you know that loves gaming
You clearly sped up the frame rate on Castlevania the adventure. Nice work I do the same 🤘🍻
Actually the original Super Gameboy runs GB titles a bit faster by default. I always appreciated that.
@@SegaLordX good to know thanks for the tip will be a purchase in the future for sure.
Only played the first one myself. While I don't particularly like, "Battle of the Holy" is such a great track. Easily in my top three tracks across the entire franchise.
You should throw St1ka some love. I really would like to help this guy get his subscriber numbers up.
Kid Dracula was better on the Famicom.
I mean that is pretty much true for any game that was also on the game boy. The fact it was portable made it easier to look past at the time.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu I think Tetris wants a word with you 😏

Kid Dracula is one of my favorite Konami games and one of my favorite Gameboy games. And objectively it's from the best Gameboy games. It's a shame Konami didnt localized the first game for NES (thank goodness for fantranslations).
I had that castlevania adventure for the gb. It was my first castlevania game. Second was sotn and third was the ps2 debut
As minimalistic as some of these early gameboy games were it was awesome to be apart of in its time.
Coco, binky, and sega lord!! Cant go wrong and can’t get into trouble.
I had belmonts revenge and it was a blast on long road trips.
Ya boy is back.
belmonts revenge music is one of the best produced for the GB
I just finished Belmonts Revenge today. Those last two bosses were a nightmare. I never liked Adventure even when I was kid. The music was the only thing it had going for it.
I loved Legends. The GB series is one of my fav, along with Double Dragon
Sega Lord X is the best video game channel on youtube
I'm a Mega fan on castlevania in general. Rondo is favourite game in existence. But the gameboy games are one an done games. The music is still good mind
Great video as always Mel. I’ve really missed your uploads. This has made my day 👏🏻
Yeah, the vanilla Castlevania GameBoy titles were so sluggish.
Finally someone who doesn't hate CVA1, and especially someone who appreciates its excellent music!
The game is unfairly hard at times but I have always enjoyed it.
are you gonna make a video talking about the handheld metroidvania style castlevania games?
It’s a shame the Konami rebirth series was lost to time.
I don't think it's really lost I would not be surprised to see it show up in another collection or three.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu lost for now
@@philipcohen7192
Fair enough.
"Lost" but not forgotten.
A Rebirth Collection will fill that void.
Finally, some games worth talking about.
Belmonts revenge is boss. Ripe seeds is a brilliant piece of music, as is battle of the holy. Christopher gets virtually no recognition from the fan base as far as fan art and Belmont rankings go, and he deserves far better.
This is fantastic, great work!
Just from watching the footage between the 1st and 2nd game I could see a huge leap in gameplay.
@j s I had the mask on my avatar way before Covid. it's a ninja mask.
Is the GB Castlevania stuttery, or is that just a problem in the PS4 Konami Castlevania pack?
Dont forget the color port that was on the Konami GB collection, I wanna say it was on GB Color, but it could of been GBA. It had stuff like Nemesis, Castlevania 1 (and 2), nd a few other Konami titles. I wanna say there was a couple collections, as well.
EDIT: Oh, I shoulda watched the while video, or at least waited til 3:00. Shoulda known SGX wouldnt miss a detail like that.
