Last year my son came into my sewing room while I was doing some cutting. He looked at my mat and said don’t you need a new one, he gave me a new mat for Christmas.
I am a collector of Antique Singers. I have 4 301A's from the 50's. I use them all the time. But I have several other special Singers that are for specific sewing projects. My nemesis mess area is the top of my ironing/cutting island. It tends to end up with a whole mess of fabric scraps.
I just got a new Olfa mat for Christmas. My old one was in bad shape, but it sits to the side of my sewing machine because my sister got it for me and she’s since passed away. I just can’t part with it. 💕
Thanks for another great video. I enjoy starting my day in the Sloan Zone. I have two machines. The first is a small Brother machine that sews great and is light enough to take places. When my grandchildren want to learn to sew, this is the machine they use. I put it on my dining table so there is plenty of room for their project. The second is my Babylock Crescendo. I love this machine! It stays set up in my sewing room and is the machine I use for all my sewing. 💕
Good Morning❣️. I have several sewing machines, Bernina and Janome is my favorite but then I also love my little Featherweight. Also have an old treadle machine I love to look at. Lol. And a few more small machines. Just love sewing machines. I also like Alfa mates. See you on line in Facebook. Love. You guys. 🧵🪡
Give your mats a lukewarm bath in the tub once a year to recondition them. I have an Olfa one that I have used for 25 yrs and it is still good. I never use the lines on the mats, so rarely use the same spot twice in a row. But now use Accuquilt for most bulk cutting.
I have 3 machines: Riccar 3300 (great straight-stitcher), my Janome 6700P (my birthday gift from hubby a couple of years ago 💕), and my mother’s Singer (another heavy duty straight-stitch). All three are treasures ✂️🧵🪡🤗💕
New sewicalities block is so cute! TY for sharing a part of your day with us! Always nice to spend a small portion of the day in the Sloan Zone. See you online!!
When you first started quilting, did you have a quilting mentor that you admired and followed. Thanks for all the wonderful videos. Always makes my day watching your videos.
I found the video of the History Guy very interesting. My parents worked in garment factories. My dad as a cutter and my mom as a seamstress. My grandmother and mother quilted and my grandfather repaired and serviced sewing machines by making house calls.
Pat, have a few of your quilting friends over and have a Binding Day. I’d love to come if I didn’t live in Australia! Might be hard just to pop over! Would be fun. A pot of soup, some fresh bread rolls and a day of binding and laughing.
I have 4 machines. They are all packed away at the moment because of a mold issue in the room they belong. I have 2 easily accessible to pull out and use when I have time.
Hi Pat, I know this is a day late but I wanted to be sure I shared a few secrets. to brush the dust off of thread spools use a baby hair brush. It is very soft and will not mess with the thread's winding. Also for dust on fabric basket and the sewing machine, use the Hayousui 4.3Kpa Keyboard Vacuum Cleaner Mini:Handheld Computer Vacuum Cordless for Car Laptop Sewing Machine Portable Keyboard Vac USB Desk Crumbs Dust Cleaners (from Amazon $29.99) These little vacuumes get into places nothing else can AND they wont such in pins because the opening is big enough for crumbs and dead mosquitos but pins just don't slide in. Another option for cleaning small things is to get finger tooth brush made from that rubber that looks like it has little dreadlocks all over : Jasper Dog Toothbrush, 360º Finger Toothbrush Kit, Ergonomic Design, Full Surround Bristles for Easy Teeth Cleaning, Dental Care for Puppies, Cats and Small Pets, Blue 2-Pack (a 2 pack is $14.99 but each one has a case)
Lots of things left to do do - mostly dusting - trying to play catch up. Had an extended Christmas here because of family schedules so still cleaning up from that 😞. Love having my coffee with you in the morning - 🙂 - So down to earth. thanks for the history link - love history. Have a great day.
Pat, I keep canned air around to dust things like your fabric basket and it’s contents. At least that way the dust flies somewhere where I can wipe it up 😄 or you can take it outside and spray out the dust.
Dust on fabric! I put the item in the dryer and run it on the air/no heat setting. It works well. The lint rollers do a good job too. I will remove a sheet to get into the corners and bottom of a basket. For baskets I usually do both methods.
The 'rubber' covers for the cords are great! PLEASE don't ever put cords under carpets. The carpets rub on the cord with tiny movements and the wires will eventually get exposed. This is a fire hazard/starter. A neighbor had a house fire due to this hazard.
Thanks for letting us know about National coffee break day! I just Venmo my children and their spouses some $$ to help them purchase a beverage of their choice. I’m sure they will enjoy the surprise.
3 sewing machines, 30 year old Pfaff in its storage case, newer Elna in the traveling case and my workhorse Brother straight stitch on the sewing table. Got a new Martelli mat for Christmas and it’s wonderful!
My nemesis right now is trying to be patient while my sewing machine gets fixed. The thread uptake assembly broke on my Juki and I haven’t been able to sew since the 2nd of January. The shop didn’t have the part and had to order it from Florida. Sigh.. I’m getting a lot of organizing done. But I want to be sewing. 🤣💜
i love to clean and organize. This is a good thing because my quilting business tends to take over the entire house. My longarm takes up one bedroom, I cut fabric and iron in our master bedroom. Our third bedroom is where customers pick up their quilts. My husband helps with binding while he watches TV at night, so there goes the living room. Currently I have a Featherweight on our kitchen table. It has a new hand crank so I can sew anywhere. Thus far the kitchen sink has escaped anything quilt related. Thank you, Pat, for all of your wonderful ideas you so freely share. You keep me accountable in a good way. 🤩
Pat, you need to try Starbucks Pink Drink, it is soo good. I need a new cutting mat. I bought a Fiskars and it is horrible! I will go back to an Olfa mat. I use my Sapphire 960Q and my old Kenmore sit under a sewingmachinecover i made. I have a huge "L" shaped desk, so they are both there.
Binding is my nemesis too! I don’t like handwork and I am not very good at machine binding…yet! I have decided that is how all mine will be completed from now on.
Karen Brown of "just get it done quilts" gives the tip to use the foam inserts from packaging to clean rotary mat. It's very similar to the scrubbing you showed.
For cutting mats I have a nice quality large mats (18x24 and 24x36) and cheap small mats (5x8 to 12x18) for when I’m making a lot of repetitive cuts like squaring up a bunch of blocks
I'm using the back of my 2nd mat and it's nearly time to finally replace it. I should remember to use my rotating mat more often as it has a nearly new surface!
Pat would you know how to find the pattern for the fabric basket you are cleaning out I love it. and that line of your fabric is still my favorite thanks' have hot tea with you almost every morning. great way to start my day
Sewcialites 2 Block #12 Captivate does not appear to be available on the FQS website yet (8:13 AM CT, Friday 20th)...ah well, at least I am set-up and ready to go!
New block cute. Following fashion trends and colors Pantone s is viva Magenta. I'm wondering how long till it makes it way in quilting 😀💖 . I remember seeing a workout outfit with Magenta, peach and coral. What do you think of that color combo? Maybe the Sloanies could vote on a nemesis quilt for you to finish! Give us 3 choices. 😁💗🍁
Speaking if dust. I had to move my primary machine and was horrified to see the dust that had accumulated on the foot pedal! I clean the floor, but had just moved it aside. Now I will dust the foot pedal when I clean the machine.
Pat, love the idea of hanging a small quilt on the front door so plan to remove my wreath once I have the Love Notes quilt done. Curious, how do you hang your quilts on your front door?
If your Featherweight needs dome TLC, could I recommend Nova Montgomery in Texas? She is an expert for cleaning and anything thing that needs repairing. I took her all day class in Houston last year and was pleased with her knowledge and supplies.
I notice you had to roll your Sloan Zone shirt sleeves up. I did too. I think the sleeves are too long. Could you maybe take a survey and see how many other people have to roll their sleeves, and if there is a majority maybe have the shirt pattern adjusted.
When there are a group of animals, they have a group name. Gaggle of geese etc. Why not a group of sewing machines….a Sloan of sewing machines?🤩😆 I have 4 machines & a long arm.
I have three machines. One is retired and store in the craft closet. One is where it’s permanent home is on my desk. One is NOT where it should be, it’s at the repair shop.😢
Started to sew on my main machine the other day and it all started up as normal but when I pressed the petal, a horrible sound like its jammed. The screen said to turn off and restart. I did, and same thing happened. The needle goes up an down no problem the embroidery arm goes in and out no problem but if I push on the petal, it sounds jammed. I'm so heart broken as this may be something I'm unable to fix by myself and my backup machine is basically a very cheap starter machines . But, at least it stitches.

Last year my son came into my sewing room while I was doing some cutting. He looked at my mat and said don’t you need a new one, he gave me a new mat for Christmas.
What a wonderful son! I too have a wonderful son.
I repurchased my old mat for my grandchildren for painting, using clay, volcano eruptions, car racing and puzzles. They are getting a lot of usage.

I so Understand your feelings about the mat. I have a machine that my dad bought me and I refuse to upgrade.
@Jane Jarvis you can upgrade and keep the machine that your Dad gave you 😉. Just display the machine your dad gave you so you can still treasure it ❤

A quick "Hi"! I'm out the door to meet a quilting friends for coffee and Quilting talk. Have a great day. Love you.
love love the tshirt in red

Thank you for introducing The History Guy!!

I love doing the binding!
Thank you
Great tips as always. I would use that basket/carrier your friend made to carry your evening tv watching project to work on.
Pat, I keep canned air around to dust things like your fabric basket and it’s contents. At least that way the dust flies somewhere where I can wipe it up 😄 or you can take it outside and spray out the dust.
I think u did one diagonal border maybe the TP Homies quilt u did it with the triangle border. Anyway the border on it looks great.

Thanks for the rational
Pat, to be truthful, I desperately need to clean the wheels of my chair!
Love the little wooden ruler box shown about 16min. into the video today. Is that still available someplace? Thank you
I usually finish a quilt to the end. I don’t make quilts like you do, Pat, because you make so many for your show.
Thanks for letting us know about National coffee break day! I just Venmo my children and their spouses some $$ to help them purchase a beverage of their choice. I’m sure they will enjoy the surprise.

Love that in repeat

I just got a hand crank too for summer camping without electricity. love it.

Love thr T-shirts

My long arm quilters will also attach binding.
Love all the “Zonies” waving to you from Michigan. Oh peeking into that red drawer, I saw that cute Chinese pin cushion. Love those

A sticky lint roller might work well on your dusty basket.
You mean your mats become GROOVY?🤣🤪
Love the new shirts!
Love the envelope on the wall. TY for all your inspiration and positive vibes.
Do you know if there’s a pattern for that? Name of it? Thanks!
Pat would you know how to find the pattern for the fabric basket you are cleaning out I love it. and that line of your fabric is still my favorite thanks' have hot tea with you almost every morning. great way to start my day
What suggestions do you have for repurposing old cutting mats???
none! i just get rid of them
Right now my sewing machine is at the condo we’re renting in South Carolina, because I can’t not sew while away!
Sewcialites 2 Block #12 Captivate does not appear to be available on the FQS website yet (8:13 AM CT, Friday 20th)...ah well, at least I am set-up and ready to go!
I think I will be busy cleaning dust collecters. 😉
Pat: where did you get the 2 drawer wire basket that is sitting on the table beside your GO cutter system? What are you going to use the baskets for?

And for those of us in the Pacific Northwest there is Darlene Girton (The Featherweight Doctor here on YT) at Sand Creek Quilting in Ponderay, Idaho.
i live in Virginia
And I live in Ne but she will gladly send and return your machine, well packed.
❤❤❤
I could use some suggestions on how to dispose of an old cutting mat. I have a large 24x36 that is being replaced.
I used an old one for a painting mat for another craft project. Kids could use it for play dough...
I need a new mat, but hard to find the large one that I have now
Are husbands considered dust collectors?
Asking for a friend 🤣🤣🤣🤣🥰
I would like to know what size is your red and white baskets and your dark baskets size and where did you get them. Thank you, Love your videos
they are from the container store about 15 yrs ago. there are sevearl sizes
I notice you had to roll your Sloan Zone shirt sleeves up. I did too. I think the sleeves are too long. Could you maybe take a survey and see how many other people have to roll their sleeves, and if there is a majority maybe have the shirt pattern adjusted.

Is there a way to bring a warped cutting mat back to life?
On a sunny day lay it on concrete. It will be back in shape. Works on cheaper mats tok
i have never been successful with that
I love your red cabinet, where did you get it?
I'm looking for the answer to this question too!
I've seen others ask, but that was before I became a Sloanie!
I answered it on a video other day,, bought 15 yrs ago at container store, made in Italy, nobody in us sells it

How 'bout declaring a Sloan Zoan Binding Day (instead of doing a National day of something)?
I guess with so much fabric being cut, etc we make a lot of dust. Often I sneeze after sewing for a period of time.
I have a wonderful lady that does my binding for me. Arthritis and lack of interest both.
Anyone know what brand that red metal cabinet Pat has in her studio (with the swing-out drawers)?
She talked about the cute red cabinet since January 1st. Pretty sure she said it is not available anymore.
It came from the Container Store years ago, and they no longer carry it.
Pat said it was made in Italy but she bought it at the container company.
The envelope with a heart.... Anyone know the pattern???
it is listed in the description box under the video - here it is again ::FREE Love Note Heart Pattern shrsl.com/3vcou
Binding is my least favorite thing to do. Most of my friends hand bind, but I bind by machine which is so much quicker.
Self healing mats need washed from time to time. Always save cleaning instructions

Only 1 dusty item?😂
I’m to anal to not finish a project with binding.
