      Since I am on the verge of starting medicine school next term I am very interested in this topic. So would you study medicine again? Do you think you "lost your 20s" due to medicine? (That's what I hear many people saying).

    • @KoiAcademy
      @KoiAcademy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      it’s a difficult question to answer. Medicine has taught me more than anything else in my life, and not having these experiences are impossible to forget now. I think the main thing I am reflecting on is that you have to look at the big picture and try to enjoy the journey. Don’t think of it as “losing your 20s”, rather it’s a “privilege to be learning and treating patients and building connections in my 20s”.

      I had to redefine what success means to me. The wrong definition stole too much joy from my life.
      The new definition of success is becoming the best version of myself I can be. It takes lifetime to mold, shape, and change a character. It’s a life long process. I want to ask myself if this is the best person I can be, and if not what I don’t like about me, and address it.
      I like who I am becoming more and more every day. It’s a very fulfilling process to like who I am. I really don’t like my old self; bitter, resentful, negative, no meaningful relationships, strife with family, etc. I am none of these things anymore; I have joy, peace, friends, reconciled with family, beautiful friendships, and lots of joy! This journey is well worth it!

    This was a touching story Matty, a surgeon told me the other week "as a surgeon these complex procedures seem very basic/mundane, but for the patient it's hopefully the first and last time they go through something so big and traumatising, it's easy to get lost as a clinician and think about these procedures as tick boxes but it's super important to take a moment and just talk to the patient and really give them your all in the moment" and I think this is something that I applied to a similar context to you, instead of just going for tick boxes and getting stuff signed off, it really pays off to just put patients first and give them your all!

      Well a former surgeon here🤚 I get that you have good intentions... but no. We are already giving our best every day. What he described in the video is us giving our whole. We do all these things not just to advance in our career but to be the best doctor we can. But more than often it takes a toll. And I understand being sick is really vulnerable but being around sickness all the time, that makes you vulnerable too. And just socializing with the patients it doesn't help. When I first started there was this patient who was being treated for over 2 years in my department and everyone else knew him and his family. When he passed away everyone felt bad. The only one that wasn't affected was me because despite the fact that I looked after him for two months I never developed a bond with him. His family although at first found it annoying just because they saw how I would treat him, after his death they thanked me. We actually argued with his daughter. But they came to understand that I do my job decently. It's just that I don't want to have a relationship with the patients other than plain professional. Anyway. I think I just got a bit triggered by your comment. I don't believe in creating a bond with a patient. It's just too much emotionally. And I believe more people have to accept that

      Hey, I just wanted to share with you the hope we have in Jesus Christ! Because we all sin, we fall short of God's perfect standard for our lives. The punishment for that sin is death or hell, so we needed a savior. Consequently, God came to earth in human form as Jesus Christ, the son of God. Jesus lived a perfect life to be a sinless sacrifice for us. Then Jesus died a death on the cross and, after three days, rose again, giving us the free gift of salvation! The Bible says in Romans 10:9, “If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” So if we confess Jesus as the son of God, genuinely believe in the sacrifice he made for us, then repent of our sins and live for God, we will be saved! I just want you to know how much God loves and longs for a relationship with you. The Lord has granted me so much peace and strength throughout the storms of my life and he can so the same for you! God Bless you!

    Omg this is what I’m going thru right now! I chose nursing because I wanna be able to enjoy my life with my kids. I don’t wanna be rich and or drive a fancy car. All I want to do is spend time with my” family”(kids)and travel and live just comfortably. I’m glad I didn’t chose to be a doctor. I’m currently working in a nursing home and I see how easy life slips away. My parents wanted me to become a doctor and of course they look down on me for being just “nurse “but in my head I say it’s my life and I do as I please. Yes I’m a rebel in my family the black sheep. I stand up for my self and I’m okay with being looking down on, it’s my life my mental health. If they want a doctor then they should do it. Yes my family hates me because I stand my ground. Life is about making your self happy not others.

      Your parents raised you well because you trust yourself enough to rebel against them. And we only have one life. Who wants to study/work all the time under all that pressure!!! Unless you have a genuine passion for the medical field. It is funny that you told your parent that if they want a doctor then they should it lol. I actually said the same thing to my mom when she was pressuring me. I told her she can just start studying now and go to Harvard and become a doctor since that is what she wants rather than what I want lol.

      I am going to nursing school this year I am 18 I chose it under pressure because I didn't know what else to chose to major in college even before applying I felt it wasn't for me because I could have breakdowns when people pressure me and tell me to multitask and I need details description of everything done quietly and not rushed or I would have a breakdown literally if someone make me pressured in work for one hour I get irritated and need sleep and then my concentration has always been low like not joking u could tell me go to the supermarket and I would get to the pharmacy and the. It is so damn true about what he mentioned. Personal life matters! My cousin, she is a surgent by design. Since we are Asian, her family "brainwash" her that "saving people's life" is the highest form of success in life and nothing else can beat that. She is rarely at home and she even rent and stay in a small room located a few hundreds meters away from hospital she is working so she can easily commute. Her parents stay alone by themselves and only exchange updates through phone calls daily. Every Lunar New Year, during family reunion, the awkwardness is through the roof. On the dinning table, the only topic can talk is about doctor topics and report her achievements. The conversation momentum die down really quick as if like inviting a noble stranger into family reunion and we cannot talk something humor/dumb because we don't want to be looked like idiots.

    Thank you for being vulnerable. Being vulnerable is not a side many of us would want to show or to share. It's okay to show weakness because we can draw strength from it too. Been pondering over questions in my head similar to yours. It's not easy to be a health worker or a student in the medical field right now. Too much responsibility. Sometimes, a little tooooo much. But you just take it one day at a time and hold unto the core values and principles that you carry on why you decided to become a doctor (this saved me from situations that I didn't want to be in)
    Hope you get the answers to your questions. Keep safe 🙏

    I'm thinking of applying to med school in a few years (currently 30). Since I work in rehab and have my own patients now, I honestly want to take my time getting to this next goal. I'm not in a hurry because the burnout is real. I still want to take vacations and make "as little sacrifices" as possible so I don't become that insane student that doesn't have a life. Been there done that. There's more to life and as we get older its really not about putting ourselves last and abandoning ourselves... all in the name of success. Balance is key-- work hard but rest and have fun too!! Remember your why!!

    When we have a goal like that as definition of success and if we can’t achieve it, it will destroy us.
    Now I enjoy life, enjoy the process of working on my character l, enjoy my children, family, and do the things I enjoy. Turns I didn’t enjoy medicine as much as I thought. I worked in a lab in a hospital for 6.5 years.
    After search I found that what I truly enjoy is music. I was way off on my career choice. I am happy doing what I love and have zero regrets, and I am actually happy that my medical endeavors didn’t work out. They didn’t work out because it wasn’t what I was about.

    This is the exact thing which makes me think back to my decision of preparing for medicine. I'm a student rn, I've not even got into a college. But medicine itself is a whole mountain which starts from here only. Yes, I have to do immense struggle to clear the exam, I want to be a doctor, but at last all I want is to live happily more than money or some else materialistic things. I think about it many times that the people who are not in this field don't even have to work this much, earn pretty much than docs, and live their lives. Though I am really passionate to become a doctor, but the reality is far away than the only quote qhich is repeated, "you'll save lives" that's good I know but I want to live my life. Right now I'm a very cheerful person and I love my behaviour. I really don't want to lose this side of me as this helps me to fight from all problems literally laughing, I'm not joking. I know it is important to be a bit serious while preparing for med entrance exams, I really don't wanna live the life you just described. I'm in a paradox, all of the suggestions are most welcomed.

    Important to note that's not discussed is a fairly high suicide rate with MD"s, Dentists,....why? The stress is unbearable with killer schedules and study routines in the prime of your life with absolutely no social life leaving me incredibly exhausted, depressed, loss of self esteem etc etc. I left also after 2 years and best .ove I've made. Good luck

      Depends, I personally like that life styles of learning lots of things. All I say is that this careers are not for everyone. At least here in Mexico medical care is non-existent, here surgeries are not managed by number of patients instead they are managed for a certain amount of time. The salary is not the same as in the USA, but the truth is that it is not useful to have a lot of salary, the important thing is to have enough salary to pay for the basics of the home and fundamental needs of the family. It's not about buying a fancy car and a fancy house.

    Going to med school is Highly expensive and it takes year to finish med school then get a residency rightfully so because being a doctor is a serious job that not just anybody can do, but before you go to med school ask yourself Is it what you really want? And is it worth it, if you want to be a doctor for the money you won't be happy, I wanted to be a doctor but after seeing how hard it's gonna be I'm starting to have second thoughts.

    Please have a look into homeopathy it's such an amazing form of healing for patients because it's so personal & your treatment is for your specific symptoms which focuses on the mental & emotional side of things more than the physical because physical is a manifestation of whats happening on a deeper level of the organism (person)

    I have the choice to Go to three universities , pharmacy , dentistry , medicine , medicine is good but I have that big fear that I will be reading and putting hard work allways , that I will mess alot of things , maybe starting a business or something will be better , my dad is a doctor and a good one , he never forced me on anything , and I like have no interest in any field LoL , like I feel confused , I don't know what to do , is medicine good or not ? , Is it hard or does it worth that all hard work ?

    • @abdullah-hi6cf
      @abdullah-hi6cf 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Whichever you feel most interested in. If you are interested and passionate about something then studying won’t be a chore, you will enjoy it and it will just be an obstacle that you overcome. You can shadow pharmacists, dentists, to get a better idea of their working conditions etc. Just pick something you won’t think about later and regret doing it

    • @PrimeDiam
      @PrimeDiam ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Forget what the guy above me said. Studying will always feel like a chore. You can't be studying for years straight enjoying it unless it's the #1 thing you want to do. I guarantee everyone would rather spend play games, spend time with others, or sleep instead. As for pharmacy, dentistry or medicine, all three help people. If you want to serve people, it doesn't matter which one you choose. You either want to choose an easier schooling path with closer gratification or a harder schooling path with a delayed, better, gratification. Or you have a fetish for teeth or drugs or something lol.
      What I'm trying to say is: it'll always be hard. you won't enjoy most of it-- literally nobody does. You can either accept the difficult path and be the 1 in 100 or fall down and be like the rest.

    Anyone reading this know that Jesus Christ loves you and he wants to form a wonderful relationship with you and trust me it is the most beautiful thing you will ever experience in your entire life. So please give him a chance because what do you have to lose. Also, go to God bc he is coming back and when he does if you are not save and have repented then you could go to hell to be tortured in eternal fire. God doesn't want that. Please seek God I beg you from the bottom of my heart before it is too late.😊
