Dude, this series has been great and what makes it even better. Your not a diesel or heavy machinery mechanic, but yet you took apart this beast and is now putting it back together making it look good as new. Amazing stuff man, can’t wait to see the refurbishment of the excavator. Another good thing, your actually seeing this build through. That says a lot, especially on TH-cam.

You have done a phenomenal job with this machine, missed working for Cat I would guess but then we would of never got to meet this guy named Matt who is driven to save a machine that Heavy D Sparks would of scrapped. It made me heart sick to see those old pieces of mining equipment just go for scrap... his words were, didn't make very much cause prices on the west coast are lower and just not worth the time... guys like you would of give him more than scrap for a possible working loader, dozer and other miscellaneous rigging. Some young people just think money and that is it. I still miss the days of setting on similar equipment doing work with them

That was hard to see, if not restored, some of those old gear need to stay around as parts doners.

Before you close up the winch case. Can you get stacks of neodymium magnets in the bottom of the wells to attract any iron or steel sediments to them.

You are absolutely correct about heating the bearings and gears. Heat them in oil. Put something between the item being heated and the bottom of the pan otherwise it will overheat from contact with the pan. Keep the temperature of the oil at exactly 250°. Great work young man!

Your taking care of your place the videos are for our entertainment (well they help you also) either way you are doing a great job, I personally like how you work through things with a lot of common sense! Great work Matt! It's really starting to come together. I also watch Clint on C&C Equipment. I love the contrast of how you are tackling your DIY/garage restoration and Clint's repairs and restorations in a fully equipped service and repair center. It's extremely impressive watching you tackle such a big (and heavy) job by yourself in your personal shop. Your engineering background comes out in how you approach not always having the right tool or dealing with some of the difficult tasks, moves and lifts.
Your videos also contain a lot of great, general DIY tips. Personally I think your two tips about the different types of wire cups/wheels and how to properly heat gears and bushings were spot on. I have seen a few people grenade the cheap 3000 rpm wire wheels on a 30,000 rpm grinder. I only buy the higher RPM wire brushes now. That way I don't have to worry about grabbing the wrong one, and I figure if it can handle a 30,000 rpm grinder it should last even longer in a 3000 rpm drill.

Discovered your channel through the ol' algorithm suggesting part 1 of the winch repair after watching an abom79 vid.
I have now gone back to the D4 series. As I type this you are putting on your surgeons hat with a power drill and a finger nail! If the pure fun/education of watching the mechanical side of things wasn't worth a sub (they are and I did!) that dedication to channel/D4 would make anyone sub!
Keep up the great work and vids!

When I restored a 1942 Ford GPW I used aircraft form-a-gasket when there were were shim packs on the sealing surface and it works well. It’s not a traditional form-a-gasket, it’s more the consistency of syrup but doesn’t dry so you can just paint it onto the shims and bolt threads and it keeps everything sealed.

*- [ Matt ] May I second all the encouragement and appropriate appreciations of your methodological tenacity, perseverance, and the conversation you keep with us as so nicely mentioned by others here, and great tips.*
*- I personally like the red-brown Glyptol primer color, but yes, a grey topcoat will support the yellow looking the same as all the rest.*
*- I guess using the SealStick to fill in the plate cover surfaces would be obvious to most viewers here, but of me it was brilliant to see how using it made right something that would otherwise become a weak point for water entry.*
*- I so very much look forward to you using this wonderfully rescued machine and its winch...and you discovering how much it will be a wonderful tool to help the farm.*

About the steel stick compound, that is most likely just epoxy dough and in my humble opinion is not recommended to handle without gloves since it contain stuff that could cause contact allergies.
