It’s hard to believe that once superhero films were once a novel thing. Now, as you note, a dark take where a superpowered person struggling with their powers is kind of run of the mill. That makes me feel old, kind of. Great review of the film Matthew.
Interesting review. Thanks for your thoughts! Also, having read the Wikipedia plot synopsis (I was never going to watch the film) I can fully understand your criticism of the ending. Oof.
I nice flip of that genre would be someone getting dark, evil and demonic powers but that person staying upbeat and happy and immediately using them for good despite several evil entities trying to convince him to use them for evil.
At this point a straight, no-subversions superhero movie would be shocking and fresh. I liked Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark a lot more than I thought I would. Sad to hear this didn't hold up.
The whole thing feels like a foreign take on the show HEROES with Nat Wolf resembling Peter Petrelli as the everyman stricken with powers he cant understand and both have no levity.
When I see a superhero movie I take it as it's own. I'm not thinking about other superhero movies when I'm busy watching the one I'm watching. I just enjoy any superhero movie for what it's for. If I started comparing all the superhero movies together then what would be the point of even watching any new movies soon to be released. You try to come up with a new and unique story line for a superhero movie I'm sure it would be the same thing as everything else as you put it. For me I loved this movie and can't wait for the sequel if there is one I hope.
I did not like this guy's previous movies either, they are bleak with the main characters dying at the end and the whole mystery never getting a good enough explanation. In Trollhunters, are we to believe trolls who can easily be killed by sunlight still exist and the government is covering this up instead of eradicating them? Or that the trolls were never a problem before modern times when weapons to kill them did not exist, nor that nobody has ever seen them when some are big enough to be detected from sattelites? Jane Doe was worse because some asshole corpse is playing stupid mind tricks on totally innocent coroners and the whole thing was set in one location, being a boring jumpscare fest. This seems to be incredibly boring too, with a focus on an actress who is extremely unnatural nor well explained (why would a counselor help a clearly dangerous and not fully sane person escape?) and the ending seems like a place where the movie should be at the halfway mark. Give me the Kenneth Brannagh Thor over this any day. 03:20 - The issue is, he doesn't really use his powers for anything. He just stumbles through the movie and causes accidents but it does not seem like he even tried to understand the powers or learn to control them until he ran into the counselor lady. Btw, was it ever revealed why they don't just simply shoot him? Or is he bulletproof? It seems weird that even after conjuring lightning from the air nobody shoots him until at the end and even then they shoot the girl instead.
I’ve been scouring the internet looking for reviews on this movie and they all sound the same. Finally, someone calls out that this movie is 90 mins of wasted potential. My god is the cinematography and theme incredible. and Nat Wolff’s angry loner character is thankfully more relatable than angsty, but I was disappointed by how Christine’s character is so 2D. She really is just there to follow Eric around like a confused doe. They made her just as useless as Natalie Postman’s Jane in Marvel’s Thor. Even so, I’m interested to see where they go with the sequel 👀.
It seems you want this to be a different film than what it is. This is not a superhero movie! This is a take on Norse mythology which is usually dark and tragic! I loved it!
This is not a good review (in my opinion of course.) Watch the movie, it's fresh, amazing, and doesn't feel like it's about superheroes, because it's not, at all. I would say watch Jacob Anders review if you're anything like me, he had my same thoughts.
Because the distributor called it "Chronicle meets X-Men" in the synopsis over here. And, yes, it is about Nordic myth, but that kind of gives a little too much away.
If you bother look at the interview to the director, Nørse is actually the god by the Viking kings, HBO tried to make some tv series Gods something which is so insanely from the origin. The director know all about the nørse culture. And Odins sons or none of those gods was good at ALL! They protected love ones. So if you expected to see the ridicilous Marvel Thor the concept of the director to tell the truth. And since it is filmed in Norway you have limited budget, they cant destroy cities. So read up on the history before you judge a movie, either before or after. And Mortal 2 is coming, the norwegian title is thunder, he had to do Mortal for US studios marketing.

Don't worry. Media trends move incredibly fast. Its not unusual for trends to become old quickly.
I do love seeing directors go from horror to action and vice versa, any director who does action and horror is good in my books
I always like my horror tinged with a bit of humor. I think nobody does that better than John Carpenter, personally.

Its basically the same as Brightburn

What, you mean Good Omens?
@@Inlelendri More Psycho Gore Man. Though that is more Billy and Mandy the movie.
I missed the premiere again, darn… Well, I’m here now. Glad to see another video from you.
Spoiler warning for Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The Kid Who Would Be King
I didn't see it as a superhero story at all it's a take on mythology it's not superhero. Mythology is often sad and dramatic

Holy Crap! I can't belive Bright Burn only came out last year?! It feels like that movie came out an age ago.
I was left waiting for part 2. Like you said, many good ideas thrown in there, never to be explored.

Appreciate the review but I think I'll check this one out myself, it appeals to me more than anything on the LFF list.

He should have fried the snipers at the end. HUGE missed opportunity.
This movie looks cool i wish i had powers like mortal in this movie
Now that. Well be great
Mortal powers look great
This is not a superhero movie this is a story of the old gods renewed
