Japan really does leave all the best things for themselves. Orville (by Gibson) guitars built in Japan between 1988-1998 are always considered to be higher quality than the Gibson's of that era.
That thing is amazing! Also, really digging the AKIRA shirt, that's one of my all-time favorite flicks, anime or otherwise. With all that JDM goodness, I was honestly waiting for you to start playing "My Heart Draws a Dream" by L'arc~en~Ciel or something.
It's great to hear your story about this guitar! Where did you end up buying your first one? From someone in the U.S.? I remember in 2013 I was a 15 year old guitar player who would frequent my local guitar shop here in the south of England and they got a bunch of Edwards models in, from the model you showed in this video (In blue as well), to many colours of the Alexi Laiho models, and even Japanese artists signature models, Like Syu, Hizaki and Teru. Actually that's how I discovered Versailles and a few years later I ordered the Hizaki signature Edwards (I actually recommend looking at that model, beautiful gold glitter roses on the body and a half scalloped neck, it sounds great!) from overseas. A couple years after that when the shop was bought by another company they kept their Teru model for sale, and that very same guitar I laid eyes on in 2013 became mine! I still have the pictures of all the guitars on the shop walls the first day they came in to the shop, it was an awesome display and I'm very thankful they imported those guitars for sale as it lead to me discovering some amazing musicians.
I've seen a few Edwards guitars knocking around over here in sunny England too. Never played one but once the shops reopen I'll have to try and find one!
That’s a beautiful instrument and it has a beautiful story. My dad sold his beloved Gibson SG in order to afford to prepare for my arrival 43 years ago. My sisters and I pitched in to buy him another one for his 70th birthday last year. There were genuine tears of joy when he opened it. I don’t know if it would have evoked quite the same emotion as it did if instead of his 1968 Fender Bandmaster, he plugged it into a modeler.
I think these Japanese guitars are beautiful, saw some esp guitars that are really crazy but also Ibanez or Gretsch that are made in Japan are great. It's not only the USA that make nice guitars. Maybe you should check out some french, german, italian and swiss guitars.... they make also very interesting and beautiful ones.
yeah Edwards has really the coolest designs, and that's for a sub brand of ESP. Used to look at their old site and especially their discontinued models all the time to see what I missed out on. BUt as soon as you understand the mentality of the Japanese it's easy to why they come up with such a wealth of different instruments, or at least different enough instruments to keep the excitement for the brand going. And it's probably the reason why this stuff is Japan only.
LOVE that guitar! Back in the day late 70s I bought a brand new Ibanez Artist and I got so much crap for buying a Japanese guitar it wasn't funny especially because I was a huge Gibson collector. It played and looked better than any guitar made in that time and most of the guitars i had at the time. Of course back then most people were only familiar with the inexpensive brands like Teisco, Silvertone, Kay etc. Funny how much those guitars sell for on Reverb today wish i kept all those yard sale guitars I bought back then even the few I rescued from the trash! I loved my Ibanez and bought a few others and over the years they are now one of the top brands. Of course I love a real ESP guitar not the cheaper LTDs never had much luck with those. It's amazing how great a lot of the Japanese guitars have become since the 70s and the fact a lot do not get imported to the states just sucks. Some of the guitars I have seen from Japanese guitar shops blow me away. I want them all, friends over there are always teasing me by sending me pics they take in the shops over there. Getting them is an expensive process and it keeps me from buying a lot of them.
I have three Edwards guitars right now and I've owned and sold two other Edwards so I can say that I love Edwards but they're not made in Japan. They're mostly built in ESP's Chinese factory (owned and operated by ESP) and then they're sent to Japan for QC and sometimes pickup installation. Same situation with ESP E-II but ESP is charging $500-$1000 more for E-II.
The Kiko ESP model. In Brazil, we used to have Tagima K1 and K2. The first one is very expensive an used one. The K1 has Brazilian Solid Cedar Body, Brazilian Maple neck and Pau Ferro Fretboard, Gotoh Hardware(including Ge 1996t) and Seymour Duncan pickups. The second first models were made in Brazil, but has an Tagima Floyd Rose licensed trem were the same wood specs. But they changed the manufacting to China, that were made with Alder Solid Body, Maple neck and Rosewood Fretboard. There were the same k2 hardware. Both models are great, very well built.
Aria Pro II is another Japanese brand that's amazing and you can fit used for next to nothing for alot of their guitars. I saw one for around 300 and it was loaded
Great vid man! Love MiJ guitars...also, Edwards is actually is owned by ESP. It sits below E-II and above Grassroots brand. Hence its design are just like any ESP model. And still MiJ and you get the excellent quality
First time I've ever noticed that photo of you and your wife in the background - that's so sweet. Edit: LOL! And then just after I post the above comment you tell the story - nice.
Yeah I have a couple of them neck through Edwards superstrats, amazing fit and finish, and quality overall, very competitive prices too in regards to the premium quality. Travelled to Japan for work back in 1990, visited a music superstore in Tokyo and gawked at literally dozens of insane Japanese market Charvel... all I could afford back then was a few crazy picks as a souvenir...
I JUST put that exact gold Floyd on my Schecter Avenger and swapped the 81 out with a 81x. also changed the knobs and nut out with matching gold parts and it totally made that guitar GORGEOUS. Nice Edwards..would love to get my hands on one.
Not exclusive from japan.. but Charvels (the 2010s and modern) and Jackson imports are second to none. I have played some expensive guitars and Japanese made are always at the top in playability!
Yes ! I have owned 3 USA Custom shop Jackson's and a bunch of import Jackson's and a couple of the Japanese made ones where right there with the USA made ones. However I ordered a Jackson Strat style guitar with one humbucker and a real floyd rose back in 1981-82 and it was the single best guitar I've ever owned . Just pure magic ! I currently own 2 import Jackson's and an old Ltd strat that has been heavily modified and I have less than $850 total in them and they all are amazing guitars especially when considering their price !
I absolutely love the sound of mahogany wood for a guitar with humbuckers! It gives is such a buttery sound but can get low, rich, and even super chunky lows. I’m absolutely am in love with this guitar. I’d probably want it in a darker color green but as far as aesthetics go with the gold hardware, Floyd Rose, and most of all I love the bridge humbucker with just a single in neck position. It gives it some clean punishment machine sleekness. Oh and the binding literally pulls it all together(haha imagine that). Oh and the reverse ESP style headstock is the coolest metal headstock of all time!!!! Great video ma man! You always bring a different flavor than the typical Les Paul, SG, Strat, Tele, plexi stack, Twin Reverb, and a Boss O-D pedal, DD-3, and a cry baby wah wah pedal. Don’t get me wrong I absolutely love all that stuff and am the proud owner of one but mostly multiple examples of each said product.
Interesting. Try to find a Killer someday. There is an absolutely amazing guitarist, in Japan, who plays lead for the band Mary's Blood. Her name is Saki, and she plays Killer guitars. They sound great.
Grab yourself one of the '80s lawsuit: Burny (Fernandes out of Japan), Greco, Aria Pro II, Orville (which at some point became the official Gibson MiJ) and many more. Fantastic guitars
The very definition of fortunate; a beautiful wife, an amazing guitar collection including the one that helped you score said wife. and a happy life because of both wife and guitars. How can we not envy you, Max?
Wow!! That model at 1:17 has some serious Akira Takasaki vibes to it! (Tied in nicely with your shirt, with arguably the greatest anime of all time!) I'm not a shredder by any means but what effort and thoughtfulness were put into the Edwards model. And most importantly, your story about selling your guitar to buy that engagement ring is adorable. Without question, you are good people, Max. She's so worth it! Thank you for another outstanding video!
For the love of all that is rock. Please, please, bring back the mohawk. Incorporate it ina music video of your own music using all of your guitars. Show off that collection, they all need to be seen.
Even sounds great clean! Still have my not-very-exotic Japanese made Electra Pheonix I bought new in 85' as new-old-stock. All 3 push pull pots for the HSH config. All still works perfect!
I own a tokai love rock, had an Edwards lp special and a few burneys. Love Japanese guitars, IMO on par or in most cases better than American made guitars. Also your humour is amazing
It looks like it is based off of the custom ESP Horizon-II for the guitarist Hizaki of Versailles Philharmonic Quintet as well as The Hizaki Grace Project, it's def checking all those boxes, Gold floyd, Floral inlay and the same translucent red.
Man I love the Grassroots I bought when I was over there. I know it’s their more affordable and not as nice as Edwards or ESP or any of the other amazing brands (which there’s a ton of) but holy fuck does it play so well! Visiting the Crafthouse and the guitar street was a dream!
I have been looking at a couple of those grassroots on eBay. They are priced a tad higher than I would normally pay, but the seller is shipping them free from Japan. They look to be exceptionally good quality for the price. I'm really into the extreme shape and they have a bunch of really cool ones.

That Edwards is awesome, sadly if I wanted to buy it and import it , It would cost doble or triple the price :/ pd: I live in El Salvador (yeah the 3rd world is a wonderful place to be a guitarist)
I really love your content and the awesome guitars you have... Just one suggestion...please try adding some more spice to your improves... It feels like I can hear similar notes in most of your videos
Maybe worth mentioning: @1:20 is the signature model of japanese metal legend Anchang of the Sex Machineguns (who's output until 2006 is just unbelieveably fun Speed Metal nonsense).
I love the guitar accept the tree of life thing on the neck. I don't know why. But I have to say the guitar is beautiful. And under a grand I just seen used. Not bad at all.
I think that guitar was based on the ESP Kiko Loureiro model, which was based on a brazilian made guitar he used to use when he started to gain spotlight

Then the finish options and appointments are again high dollar customs from the US Mfr. and cost 2x-4x more.
Yep,,,Edward's are super bad ass.Kind of funny that not too many people really know about them.
