The composition of the first one is brilliant. The way the massive cloud structure has the upward energy, like the plane is shooting up and out of the clouds like a bullet into space. Makes me think of adventure.
I’m curious what color and brand of blue you used for the sky in the first painting? The watercolor blue I used (Daniel Smith French ultra marine ) shows a lot of graininess and not the wonderful depth of color you achieved. Also, I’m guessing you finished with gouache? Amazing realism in this painting and I really appreciate you showing your process. Painting clouds is my passion. ❤
Since it was a long time ago, I don't remember exactly, but it was probably ultramarine deep mixed with cerulean blue. Each brand has its own strengths and weaknesses. I mainly use Holbein, and to achieve the desired color, I mix white paint or use paint directly from the tube. For the finishing touches, I used white tones, which might give a gouache effect. Thank you for appreciating my work.😊 I support your passion for painting clouds!
You could use gouache to get a very smooth look. If you only have white gouache, then you can mix this with granulating watercolors to make them dry smooth (but you lose the luminous transparency that watercolor is known for). Also I agree with going with Holbein as it's a less granulating brand and is easy to control.
