I wanna point out, when you showed the back of the TOPPs card for PikaBlu/Marril. Something that I just noticed that Snubble was using Buru, the Japanese Name was used in it's place as well.
We didn't know the name for Snubble back then either. Ho-oh, Togepi, Marill, and Snubble have always been the most special and most important of the Gen 2 Pokemon, because they were introduced so far ahead of Gen 2 with virtually ZERO explanation, and that made them TRULY absolutely legendary, like Mew. ACTUAL mythical Pokemon with REAL WORLD myths and legends. I think I still have that card somewhere.
1:50 The code of Pokémon Yellow shows that there was also a special Clefairy edition planned. Clefairy was even supposed to be the main mascot of the franchise and was Red's partner Pokémon in the original Pocket Monsters manga.
…How, exactly? They have native words for other colors, and orange is a color, that's literally a universal thing, so like…how did they ever not have a word for "the color you get when you mix red and yellow"? That doesn't make any sense!
@@Wandergirl108 The Japanese word for "Green", is Midori. This did not exist in Japanese until at the earliest like the 800's or very very late 700's AD. Of which the word originally referred to "fresh" things such as grass and trees. "木々は緑です", literally "The trees are green" INITIALLY meant the trees are ALIVE. Now, Japanese does have a phrase that could translate to "Orange" before the inclusion of Orange/Orenji as a loanword. That phrase is "炎色", "Flame-Color" with the kanji specifically for fire and the kanji specifically for color right next to each other.
@@onijester56 Ah, I see…so they described colors using other words associated with them, before the West introduced the concept of identifying colors in a vacuum. That's kinda cool, actually…
@@Wandergirl108 The cool thing is that the West did the same thing, for most of its history. If my etymology is correct, the word "White" is ultimately the modification of a root meaning "Bright" or "Shine". For most of the West's history "Red" and "Rust-Colored" were the same word. At some point, we decided to separate the two. Probably those ancient philosophers' fault. I blame Socrates, lol.

First fact... Actually, orange HAS made an actual depiction if you count Scarlet. The Academy is Naranja Academy, which translates to ORANGE Academy. So, as you're counting the Japanese exclusive Green, then you must count this as well.

The colors thing gets even worse. People have found out that there were inner listings for a "Pokémon Pink" to be released alongside Yellow (possibly Clefairy or Jigglypuff as the only starter, tho speculative) And that the working titles for Ruby and Sapphire were Crimson and Indigo. If you want even more, though spectulative too: Pokémon SwSh is rather obvious too. "SwSh" makes us think of Switch, but as the boxart legendaries are usually related to the game title "Cyan and Magenta" were right there. Add to Gen 9 with "Past and Future" and schools named "Orange and Grape", I think it's fairly safe to assume working titles internally would have been "Orange and Purple" before it turned into Scarlet and Violet. The thing with Nidoking and Queen is kiiiinda... well. It's right but it's also wrong. Wigglytuff and Azumarill share the exact same inspiration. It's clear by stage 1 that Nidoran do have some rodent inspirations, but I wouldn't say rabbit.
Poison/Flying being unique to Zubat family is absolutely wild. TBH I've been playing since Red/Blue and never used them until a recent ORAS playthrough (played alongside my 10 year old, was really fun), and used Zubat family and goodness it is it great. Def a new favorite!

Pokémon Orange for November 2026. Also funnily enough there's Naranja (spanish for Orange) Academy in Scarlet which we all know is paired with Violet & the Indigo DLC.

When you realize that indigo and violet are basically the exact same color it kind of helps explain why they probably didn't release those two along with the first generation lol
