THE RISE AND FALL OF THE MIDLANDS | Football History

  • I visited Aston Villa, Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion, Walsall, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Coventry City, Leicester City, Derby County, Notts County AND Nottingham Forest to chart the incredible rise and fall of the Midlands.
Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest have more European Cups than all the London teams combined but are currently battling Premier League relegation.
Wolves, West Brom and other MASSIVE teams in the Midlands were Football League founders but are currently struggling in 2022/23.

Notts County not even being in the Football League is insane tbh - they should be at least Championship if they were run properly but alas they haven't been - remember the whole Sven/Korea affair - what a clusterf#ck that was! Maybe one day they'll get a decent owner who will pump some money in and run it properly - be great to see such a historic club in the big leagues playing Forest in the Nottingham Derby.

      Love your vids. 🙂
Sadly there seems to be a correlation between clubs and their region. If their region slumps economically there is a large likelihood teams will follow that pattern. Liverpool and Mcr have bucked that trend but overall seems to be proved.
Incidently Peter Withe'sname is pronounced "With".😉 He has a distinctive "Scouse" accent. 🙂
When in Mcr, did you visit the site of the Royal Hotel where the Football League was formed or the site of the 1893 F.A. Cup final between Everton & Wolverhampton Wanderers in Fallowfield?
      Thanks once again. 👍⚽️

      Who is the Second City?
      Brummer = "Birmingham".

Great video. Birmingham were actually the first British club in history to play a major European final. The final was contested over two legs in 1960 against FC Barcelona. Unfortunately we lost 4-1 in The Camp Nou (Typical Blues). We reached the final the following year in 1961, becoming the first British club to beat Inter Milan in The San Siro along the way, once again were defeated over two legs (4-2) by AS Roma in The Stadio Olimpico. We don’t have the trophies a lot of other Midlands clubs have, but we were pioneers for British football in terms of the European game. Great Video, enjoyed it.

As a Cov supporter its great to see a video on this. Most people seem to only recognise the north and south in football, where even the existence of the midlands as a region is ignored.
Northerners think we're southerner, southerners think we're northerners, and everyone thinks we all talk like Dudley!
The Midlands is a hotbed of football. Look at the Championship. 3 (WBA, Stoke, & Cov) of the 4 midlands clubs are in the top 8 of best supported clubs, and I'm sure Brum would if St Andrews wasn't falling down

I love football history. Reading about it all on wikipedia or somewhere else gets boring after a while. It's better to play your video. Then I can see and hear everything and it's much more fun. Since I'm from the Czech Republic, I don't consider myself to be someone who can speak English perfectly, but I always understand you well and can understand all the information. You create perfect videos, you have interesting information and even a person whose native language is not English understands you well. Perfect combination. For football fans who love football, it is ideal to watch your channel. If you filmed the history of football clubs everywhere in Europe, it would be hours of interesting material and I would honestly watch it all.
As for the Champions League final, not only clubs from the same countries played in it. In 2014, clubs from the same city played against each other in the Champions League final. Real Madrid vs Atlético Madrid.

Great last few words there before ending the video. Nowadays you can just see fans around the world fancying the players rather than the identity of a club. the midlands is a footballing hotbed full of great historic clubs as this video illustrates well, i think it's so important for young fans to know something about football history, currently there are are about 5 premier league clubs who've won absolutely no major trophies, brighton, bournemouth, palace, fulham and brentford, of course the fact these clubs are in the top flight is incredible and shows that fortunes can go up as well as down, west brom are a massive club far bigger than many current premier league clubs but that's the beauty of the english game(even now) fortunes fluctuate, i don't like the way the game has gone, i have myriad criticisms but i still love football and i love the history of the game, very enjoyable video

Well being from Norfolk, the way we look it is, there is one professional club, Norwich - they were a non league side until the late 20s, then Fourth Division side until the 60s, when they went up to the Second Division. Then, they went up to the First Division in the mid 70s for the first time ever. They have been up in the top two ever since ( bar on season ) It is a similar case with Ipswich, though they were always a bit ahead of Norwich. So, let's hear it for that. Norwich and Ipswich in Europe again and in the Champions League within two years, whaaddaya say ? All very well the history and roots - but there are other incredible stories. Marlow FC, down south near Wycombe, are the only club to have been in every single FA Cup - they were formed in 1870 and the FA cup started in 1871. They have a 93 year old main stand, bought from Southampton. Yarmouth Town have the oldest 'Grandstand' left in all of Britain ( they need a football club way higher for that history and town size ). Cheers.

Oh, and Billy Wright was also the first centurion of English football :) There's a lesser known belief that Wolves' Premier league struggles this year have been because his statue is cordoned off during match days now - and many many fans have a superstition of touching that statue before the kick off (for good luck) and the inability to be able to touch it is affecting our luck... lol

UEFA Cup 1980: Final Borussia Mönchengladbach - Eintracht Frankfurt
Another fun fact about the UEFA Cup: the year before, the semi final was contested by three German clubs: Borussia Mönchengladbach (who won it), Hertha BSC Berlin, and MSV Duisburg (look up MSV Duisburg: founding members of the Bundesliga in 1963, vice champions in the inaugural season after 1. FC Köln; they have always been my favourite German team, have never won any trophy, and are plying their trade nowadays in the 3rd Division of German football; how the f**k were they able to get into the semi-final of the UEFA Cup?)

Leicester used to play pretty stuff in the early 70s with Worthington..Glover..Weller.Birchenall but were a bit lightweight to compete at the top.The old ground had a great atmosphere with the crowd close to the pitch. The best ground for cramming them in next to the pitch was the old Baseball Ground. How they got 40 thou in there was a miracle.

Leicester will stay up, mark my words, shaky start, yes. We have a new number 1 in goal, Danny Ward, only ever came on for European / Cup games at lower levels. Kasper set records for the most consecutive appearances in goal for Leicester. Danny never had a chance, now he is number 1 he needs to get upto speed with the challenges he faces playing in the PL, and after a few weeks and quite a few losses, he is infact started to show progress and keep clean sheets. We will stay up, it will take time and a few hits along to way, but it will happen.
