  • I didn't plan to at the start of the video but I ended up visiting every major stadium in Dublin.
    I went to every single Dublin-based League of Ireland Premier Division stadium including two, huge national stadiums:
    Tallaght Stadium, Shamrock Rovers FC
    UCL Bowl, UCD AFC
    Aviva Stadium, Irish National Football Team
    Richmond Park, St. Patrick's Athletic FC
    Dalymount Park, Bohemian FC
    Tolka Park, Shelbourne FC
    Croke Park, Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA)

    Brian Kerr is not just a Pat's legend, he's an Irish footballing legend too. Took his boyhood club Pat's from being a forgotten struggling club to the best team in Ireland on a shoestring budget. Then had huge success at Ireland underage level. Before a decent spell at the Irish senior side the Faroes.
    He quite literally lives for St Patrick's Athletic Football Club. What a man.
    Would love to see a feature on Pat's next time you're back in Dublin. A fascinating football club with its foundations in the local railway works and the heartbeat of a community that encompasses the Liberties, Inchicore, Bluebell, Drimnagh, Crumlin and much further afield.

      I take it you're a Pat's fan? Long shot but I don't suppose you know a guy called Eddie Thompson? probably in his 50s or 60s now. He was a Pat's supporter from Inchicore, lived in Britain about 20 years ago, who I used to work with but lost touch. Could do with making contact again, I borrowed a book from him and never got chance to return it.

    When Brian said that he managed St Patrick’s I was pretty skeptical like anyone would because it not everyday that some random man in the street tells you that he was a manager for a team like that so I did a little research on him and it surprised me as before he joined St Patrick’s he was the assistant manager of Drogheda United. After he got done coaching St Patrick’s, from 1997-2003 he coach Irelands U16, U18, and U20. Then from 2003-2005 he was the manager for Ireland. His last team that he managed was Faroe Islands from 2009-2011. Pretty remarkable career if you ask me!

    Another weird fact. Given that you mentioned Bob Marley, Apparemtly, Dalymount was the venue for Bob Marlay's final ever outdoor gig. The club issued a replica Jersey with his image on it recently as a kind of collectors item.

    • @dontfeedthetroll294
      @dontfeedthetroll294 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah his last outdoor gig, and it was the day I was born. His last ever gig was in St Petersburg, I've a recording of it on cassette tape somewhere in my mothers. One of his best performances IMO, it's almost as if he knew it was his last and therefore have it his all and then some. Best versions of "Redemption Song" I've ever heard, for the bit where he says "won't you help to sing" all the crown started to join in. He has the crowd eating from the palm of his hand, only time I've ever witnessed something so beautiful in relation to music, was Freddie Mercury at Live Aid.

    • @dontfeedthetroll294
      @dontfeedthetroll294 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Round the other corner (Jones Road) is the home of Tom Farquharson, Cardiff's FA Cup winning goalkeeper in 1927 - the only non-English side to win the FA Cup.

    Great video! I really hope you enjoy Belfast next week, I think you will particularly enjoy the Oval (Glentoran FC’s ground) as it’s old, full of history and hasn’t been touched by time or modernisation. It might be more difficult to get into some of the grounds in NI with it being the off season but there is a brilliant tour of Windsor Park (The National Stadium) you can do which includes entry to the National Football museum. The tour guides there are incredible and so passionate about their job, I would highly recommend it. I would also tweet some clubs in Belfast or wherever in Northern Ireland you want to go and I’m sure some of the groundsmen or club members would be more than happy to have you look around their ground, I know my club Glenavon who are based in Lurgan (30 mins from Belfast) usually leave their ground open to visitors.

    Shelbourne's ground was formally the home of arguably Dublin's most famous football team DRUMCONDRA FC who played in TOLKA PARK until the early '7o's before going out of the league on the early 1970's which was a tragedy but are still playing as a good junior club.They played in distinctive colours of all yellow with two vertical red hoops on their jerseys and regularly played to crowds of 20,000 and up to 28,000 up to the late '60's.Shelbourne were originally from Dublin's south docklands in Ringsend and had a fine ground built there in the 1950's which succumbed ti inclement bad weather which affected the iron clad ground.After a nomadic existance playing on Greyhound stadia in Dublin they moved into Drumcondra's old ground.it is now set to be redeveloped after being saved from demolition thanks to their fans relentless determination.We await news on when the new development is to start.

    You’ve no doubt realised by now you were blessed to meet the legend that is Brian Kerr, but don’t know if other points have been picked up. Dalymount Park used to be the home of Irish football with many internationals played there up until the early 90’s, Lansdowne would’ve taken over in the 70’s. I maybe wrong on this but Croke Park is the 3rd largest stadium in Europe with a capacity of over 82,000, it’s a magnificent stadium with lots of history (some tragic unfortunately) and while it’s a GAA stadium it does host big gigs as well as National football and rugby games while Lansdowne Road was being redeveloped.
    Great video.

    @0:17 just tidbit, very few people Ireland call it soccer. It used to be called that in previous generations more, to differentiate it from gaelic. But most people nowadays to make it clear just say "I play gaelic football", or just "gaelic". If you say 'did you watch the football match last night' - unless it was a gaelic football quarter final or something, they mean probably the Liverpool or Man United game
    Good video. I love seeing outside perspectives on Ireland

    If English fans want a taste of what football was like in England in the 1950s, come to Ireland. Some of the grounds are stuck in the past in some cases. The FAI completely abdicated responsibility for developing the LOI and too many football fans only watch English football.

Turners Cross has the best atmosphere of any ground in Ireland and this derby will be great. Citys average attendance is way more than the majority of clubs in the Premier League here. We are top at present and Waterford 3rd.

    You should visit Waterford, Waterford FC (formerly Waterford United) play in the RSC which is also an athletics track
    Waterford Untied have a huge history in Irish club football. They played in Europe against the likes of Manchester United, Celtic, Dinamo Tbilisi (the season they went on to win it) among others. Last time we qualified for Europe was finishing 4th in the 2018 Premier Division season but due to the 3 year new owner rule we were disqualified and St Patrick's Athletic took the spot instead for the 2019-20 Europa League

    Hi just a new subscriber to your brilliant football channel. Great content. I see you intend to come to Northern Ireland soon. If you are looking for suggestions you should come down to Londonderry/Derry. My local football team Institute FC ground share at the Ryan McBride Brandywell stadium. This is the home ground of Derry City FC. Great historic ground. My team play there as our stadium was flooded in 2017 and we cannot go back there sadly. It is located on the outskirts of Derry at a olace called Drumahoe. On the same grounds of the YMCA. Worth a look too if only to see the sadness of a beautiful little ground.

    Went to my first big game at Tolka Park. I think it was the summer of 1987 Home Farm v Liverpool, it was part of the deal that sent Ronnie Whelan to LFC. Great buzz around the place that night. I believe they are knocking it soon to build apartments, such a shame.

    Bohemians are the oldest continuous team in the League of Ireland. They are also the only ever present team in the premier division. Their Stadium is also due for re-development in the very near future. This is the stadium where the Ireland national football team played all of their games up until the mid 80's when they started the share the The Aviva (Lansdowne Road) with the national Rugby team. Unfortunately Dalymount has deteriorated somewhat in the intervening period but due to be improved thankfully so the next time you return you should see a much improved stadium.

The record attendance at that stadium came in 1957 when Ireland played England in front of 48,000 it was Irelands first home ground for a long time before Landsdown Road which is now the Aviva stadium. Pele also played in Dalymount for his club Santos.
