Sibson was brave but was a couple of levels below Hagler here; Hagler has to go down as one of the greatest and most versatile middleweight champs of all time - RIP Marvin and thanks for the (many) exciting years of top-class quality boxing entertainment.
One of the most overlooked performances by Marvin. He was outstanding against a tough as nails man. Shame about Tony. Couldn't beat Marvin but probably would have won some version of the title today.
Sibson was one of the bravest fighters i ever saw live. Obviously outclassed, but a true warrior. !! I will always respect his courage and integrity. !!
I find it fascinating how elite fighters make difficult stuff look so natural. Tony Sibson had some good head movement, he was light on his feet, he had some hard up and down combos. The same game plan worked a treat against Minter and he splattered him. However, against Hagler he basically got dog walked. Beautiful movement from Hagler to keep the range and stay off the ropes, punching on the move, jab-step back-then ripping a surprise combo. This is all very difficult stuff. Minter in comparison looked basic as hell. If Tony Sibson had cut the ring off a bit more he might have had a lot more success - that was a major mistake from his corner. Ultimately though Hagler just seemed better everywhere - tighter guard inside, spinning off at angles. He was just a different level.
I agree. This was the 80s and look at his conditioning. Then there was his boxing ability. The first round of his fight with Tommy Hearns was the best round of boxing I've ever witnessed. Sadly he died far too young. But do legends ever die?
Agreed. Iron chin, power in both hands, could fight from both southpaw and orthodox stance effectively, elite stamina, and for a pressure fighter, very good head movement and defense. He could do everything and that made him adaptable vs various styles of fighters.
Couldn't agree more, Marvelous Marvin Hagler was my hero, the greatest middleweight to ever step in the ring. He had everything , granite chin, skill, we can only imagine what his opponents felt like seeing this relentless man just coming at you time and time again. He worked so hard to get to the top, for years he was denied a shot at the title. R.I.P champ ❤
Tony Sibson in his chosen sport of boxing was in an era when there was only three titles, from a country with poorer training and sparring and poorer opportunities,But when he managed with extreme hard work to get his chances to fight for world titles he tried so hard and did his utmost to win.He did beat some big names.Bravery, integrity and commitment is to be admired even if "Sibbo"never won a world title.Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank would have had to work very hard to beat this guy.Ex World champion Frank Tate the last fighter who beat Tony Sibson said he was a fan of Sibson when he fought Hagler.
This was the greatest ever period for middleweight boxing. Hagler. Hearns, Duran, Leonard were all superb. Sibson would be world champion against today's middleweights.
"Of course.....it's a Hagler crowd...." And very definitely a Hagler commentator based on the lack of objectivity. Sibson took three fast right crosses, and immediately counter-attacked and delivered some good counter punches- commentator says *NOTHING.*
@@Salieri47 I have to say, as a general rule, I find American boxing commentators are almost always partisan and subjective. British commentators are generally far more even handed and fair. Hagler deserved the win, but Sibson didn't receive the acknowledgement that his skill and efforts deserved from the commentator. I note that when they made the Ali film- which I enjoyed, the famous knock down of Ali by Henry Cooper wasn't even referred to in the film! Yeah, first time I've watched this back since 1983 and Sibson did a lot better (whilst getting stopped in 6 rounds) than I remembered. His head movement and balance was good, he landed some hard left hooks in close, but Hagler's jab was a ramrod. He was a shorter guy (less than the listed 5'9 and a half he was listed at imo), but with a freakishly long reach. You could see Sibson getting hit numberous times while thinking he must be out of range.
Sibson made Hagler feel that crusader and this is confirmed by the way he KOed Alan Minter, Hagler couldn't knock out Alan Minter like Sibson did. Well, the fighting styles helped him, but he showed he had a great punch
Sibbo was injured before the fight. That is why he could not spar. His protector snapping took all his concentration away. He admitted he could not concentrate on the fight, but rather focussed on what was going on "down below." He said it was the most frustrating six rounds of his career.
