Well said mate, some hospital doctors in VIC would lead you to believe your an idiot for not having known you should be replacing injectors at 170thou kms….. like it’s in the manual or something

Pistons crack due to excessive heat. Excessive heat is due to rich fuelling, which is typically what happens when there is high load (typically towing) and low revs.
When towing, its advantageous to select a lower gear, thereby running the engine with higher revs instead of leaving the transmission in "D" - higher revs => leaner fuel to air mixtures => lower combustion temperatures => reduced thermal stress on the cylinders & cooler running turbo. Higher revs are your friend when towing. So don't tow in D but follow the advice Toyota has provided in the Owners Manual.

    Totally agree Peter.
Thanks for getting us back on the road with the reco 3.0, by the way.
I compared the shape and size of a Mahle piston (Mahle Motorsport USA) and it’s very clear that it is much more robust.
Apart from the obvious use of more metal the shape of the bowl is very different. It was very interesting indeed listening to what the Mahle guy had to say…I could tell they really knew their stuff.
I just can’t understand why Toyota cannot get this right.
Their customers are hurting, yet they just do not care.
In years to come I think used Prados, Hilux etc with the 3.0 and 2.8 will be selling cheaper than competitors due to this issue.
    Cheers

Sounds like we need to lawyer up and class action for compensation on cracked piston

I often wonder if the piston problems are going to turn into a class action.

It's a bit of a worry that's for sure, and I don't even own one. "Common rail diesel that is".
However I am a toyota fan.
Thanks for your honest knowledge hay👍

In your opinion is a Prado V6 less prone to failure than the 1KD with both being regularly serviced iaw service schedule.

A 1GR-FE (4.0 V6) is so far ahead of the diesels in terms of reliability and dependability.

Because the 1KD pistons don’t fail if you don’t chip it and keep the injectors working good by replacing after 170 000 km with genuine Toyota parts.
