David Dhawan tried fitting his son in the vaccum created by Govinda, but failed, because Govinda was unique in his craziness and facial expressions. He made the 90s memorable. Also if you see, Govinda had excellent dancers as his heroines like Karishma, Raveena, Shilpa Shetty. All good dancers who could also match him in his madness.

But instead of bringing our own good journals of films to the range beyond Hollywood; we simply adopted the Hollywood film ideas. We left our good old days behind. Now only the commercial one wins....
These films were commercial films, they were just slapstick , non-sensical and quirky humor , there were bad films then and there are bad films now, those days films were mostly unrealistic and meant to be just fun. But today there are films which deal with all range of issues, which are also serious and play with genres.
There's no reason why both can't be celebrated and maintained in balance. Also, commercial ones have always been the winner in India. Since when did we start giving credit of success to anything else?
also people are sensitive now.. many jokes and dialogues n instances will get so much criticism if adopted the same way or said along the same lines. change is inevitable but yes the change we see now isn't very refreshing.. not upto Hollywood standards in terms of action, and comedy is coming down n songs are getting remixed... we have better editing n colour on screen. fashion is of prime importance in films these days.. khokhla... once now n then a nice movie hits otherwise its all mix n match of things here n there. govinda was true entertainer 🔥🔥🔥
There is no problem with commercial films. The problem is Bollywood filmmakers from around the mid 80s lost the skill in making commercial cinema. Almost every movie(with a few exceptions of course) was just glorifying the hero and heroine, place in a number of unnecessary songs, get in some kind of villain to create some problems, put in some cheesy dialogues and action scenes and that was it. They made the same nonsense one after the other for decades. And the sad part is the audience were too dumb to expect anything better! If you watch malayalam commercial cinema from the late 80s onwards you can see the difference in quality. They made commercial cinema just like Bollywood but was more often than not very well thought out and executed.

But best drag act of the 90s would be Kamal Haasan's titular role in Chachi 420. And Govinda Kader Khan is possibly the only duo in Bollywood who could match SRK-Kajol's chemistry. Two are different kind of chemistry but still. It's a shame that we didn't have something like Laurel and Hardy or the Three stooges with the 2 of them.
Kamal had an entire make up to make him look like a women, while those roles that you have mentioned of Govinda were purely based on his facial expressions alone. You have compared two different things. And Govinda-Karishma and later Govinda -Raveena also had similar chemistry.
