David Bowie was one of the few white performers to appear on Soul Train. He did Fame, and he also did Golden Years, during his Funk period. This was back in the day when Bowie was wasted all the time, and hanging out with John Lennon.
I was a huge Bowie fan before this song came out and first time I heard it, was blown away feeling it was way ahead of its time. I went to the concert in Toronto when the first tour featuring this song rolled out and have seen him twice more since. RIP Genius!!!

Half way through the song, all the kids in my class asked my teacher to take it off because they didn't like it. After that, the only black kid in my class asked me for the song and the artist. I found it amazing when you think that there was the royal family and all these diamond miners in Africa and profiteers and other monarchs. Another Bowie song that I like is DJ and the way he has to make fun of them, as you say he is very versatile but Heroes is for me its biggest hit especially the long version.

Most of the music we listen to, particularly the 20th century forms are perfect examples of that. Given James Brown's long and influential career, David Bowie must have been listening and learning..."what goes around, comes around"...
