Excellent video, thank you! No bs, no annoying music, no long stories. Just a short and complete how-to in both directions. I wish everyone did videos like this.
Thank you for this! I accidently learned how to pop off the right side of the tailgate today, when loading stuff in the back while at Costco. I pushed the tail gate too hard, with too many boxes in the back. The right side lifted up and unhooked itself. I thought I broke the tailgate off the truck. We are a bunch of girls and had no idea what we were doing. But after watching this video, we did okay.
Have owned Dodge pickups since 1966. When I bought a new 1972 model, the tailgate removal was basically the same as covered in this video. For 50 years I have been removing/replacing taking Dodge tailgates using the same process. However, today I spent an hour trying unsuccessfully to remove one from a 2016. Could not get it off the left side hinge. Finally looked at this video and noticed a question about the tailgate assist rod. Then it dawned on me why the tailgate seemed to be so light (I thought Dodge was skimping on the metal). After I removed the right side from the hinge, I raised the tailgate back up, and the left side slipped right off the hinge (no pressure from the assist rod). The owners manual for 2016 did not mention raising the tailgate back up. Old dogs can learn new tricks!
We have a tailgate from a RAM. It came with the house we bought in the garage. Hanging on the wall as a seat. We want to sell it but don't know how to identify it or tell what year it's from. Can anyone help with tips on that? (It has no camera hookups)
On my 2011 the connector plug to the camera is too fat to slide out for access. I'll try doing the tailgate decoupling and see if..I can unplug it then...if the tailgate can be rested on something.
Great job. Thank you. We bought our Ram used & don't have the replacement cap. I'm unable to locate 1 online. Do you have any suggestions @programyourremote?
You're Welcome! Try calling a Ram/Dodge dealership and speak with their parts department. Explain to them what you are looking for, they may have it in stock. Also, get the actual part number from them - you may be able to find it online if you search by part number.
I may have to do this. I unloaded a bunch of gravel and it got stuck in the tailgate. Any tips for unloading stone and dirt to keep it from getting in the tailgate groove???
On my Colorado, I made a hopper out of ¾” exterior plywood the front was the same height as the bed, used some 1x2’s cut at an angle to slope the sides over the wheel wells, tailgate board was cut long enough to cover the tailgate and the hole. Secured with a couple of cleats. I used a BLO/turpentine mix to seal all the boards all six sides. Cleaned it off when I was done and kept it in the dry.
I found out by accident how they pop off I had a hand full of tools and with one hand pulled the handle and started to lower the gate and must of had just enough upward pressure on it and the bastard fell off and I had a jack sitting behind the truck so when it fell it hit the hand and dented it ...not exactly how one wants to see how it comes apart .
I found that removing the cable was rather tight, so I lowered the spare tire and got under the truck to unclipped it first. I hope that this tip might help someone.
Stole my neighbors tailgate very swiftly last night thanks to this video! appreciate it bud!!

I've got a 2017 Tradesman version of the Ram 1500 and it's different than the normal Ram 1500
Thank you much appreciated. I live in brutal cold weather and I needed my tail gate off to put on my sander. You sure helped. Thank you

Not sure - Maybe put a tarp down in the bed before filling
