Hello. Thanks for the video. I have a 2017 Ram 3500 which I bought used. Finally took time to work on my tailgate. My issue was the lock mechanism was not locking the tailgate. I could see the actuator trying to lock it but could not. Upon finding this video I pulled the sleeve back on my actuator and discovered someone inserted two stop blocks instead of one. I removed the second and now my tailgate has a fully functional lock and only one stop block. Thank you for helping to fix my locking system.
Oh man!!! That video was dead on it. When I took my truck to the dealership a couple years ago, the tailgate latch STOPPED working. I did not need the recall, the careless mechanic did not see that there was already a rubber stopper in there and the moron added another. I took one of them out and my truck tailgate locks once again. GREAT video MotoCity Mechanic. Thank you.
When I first clicked on the PT Cruiser video My first impression was " Oh boy another backwards hat youtuber trying to be 16 years old." I was VERY WRONG. Knowledgeable experienced and articulate. I like the no cussing and no acting like a WWE wrestler. The quality of these videos could be used in a classroom to teach techs. I just wished you worked on the models of cars I own so I could reference your videos when I have problems.
I hear a few people say the same thing about the hat.....lol. That surprised me. Its just something I have come to do for some reason and stuck with it. I like wearing a hat and sometimes it gets in the way and I have to spin it around....after awhile I just left it that way. Glad to see that you stuck around and watched and gave it a chance. Thanks for reaching out and for the comment Mike. Make sure to subscribe,
I think its just because so many younger guys are slackers and have zero motivation so us older guys make assumptions. But you stuff together. You and South Main Autos Eric O have great knowledge.
Eric is on a whole nother level! That man is a rocket scientist who turns wrenches and I have much respect for him. He is very humble and doesnt think he is but he is on my top list of the best in my opinion.
Hey since your online- got a hypothetical question. Many engines by faulty design consume oil early in life. This is aggravated by lack of oil changes. If someone bought new a known problematic car/truck- drove it sensibly and changed the oil and filter every 3000 miles - ignoring the MFGRS recommended intervals and changed the coolant every 2-3 years regardless of what the manual states would that engine go say 200k plus miles with no problems?
I just noticed that happened to me twice so far. It tells me my tailgate is open on my 2020 ram 1500. Looks like I’m going to have to take it to the dealer thanks for the heads up much appreciated
I just received this recall notice a few days ago for my 2015 RAM 1500. Thanks for the video! I'll have the back plate off the gate before I take mine in so I can properly install it without any warpage!
Thanks again for another no BS video it was to the point and on time I actually received that recall few weeks ago. Thank you again for your time and effort it is appreciated.
Had the whole locking mechanism replaced on my 2016 well before this recall for this very issue so now I need to have them install this rubber stopper. Hopefully a year of actuating hasn't broken that piece off again. Thanks to this video I could do it myself but unfortunately I have 2 additional open recalls on the truck as well as my parking brake release handle hinges have now broken so will have to take it in. I'd rather have the dealer do it under warranty anyway. Keep up the great work with the vids!
They have to make sure it gets done. It’s all about safety....not just damage to the truck but if not done the tailgate can open and what’s in the bed can come out and hit cars behind you and possible hurt/kill someone. Simple fix....simple part....but dangerous results if not done
With how many people are not very good with their hands i think they opted out of that option... Just because someone owns a truck doesnt mean they are very handy. Scary when you think of the plenty of people in this world who would get lost on how to properly turn the bolt. They have not much knowledge about righty tighty or lefty loosey or even have tools in their garage. Ive met some people that didnt even have a screw gun..... the standard tool that should be given to us at birth.
Yes, I want to obtain that piece and do it myself. Our 3500 has been deleted, so suffice it to say I don't want it going within a 50 mile radius of any stealership!
One piece of plastic will take a dealer about 2 to 3 hours to complete a 5 min job Thanks for letting people know please keep these important vids going
Love your vids! My 2006 hemi does this. I have had my tools all over the road~ Nothing like looking for all my sockets, wrenches along with everything else all over!
Fabulous update David. It doesn’t affect me as I’m in the U.K. 🇬🇧 and drive a 2012 1.6 tdci titanium x Ford Focus lol 😆 I just think your way of explaining things are top notch 😊 Thanks again talking the time to share your fixing videos 👍🏻 Cheers Stevie.
VIDEO IDEA: It's December 2022 and there is a big recall for 5th gen Ram tailgates, but nobodyhas made a video that I can find that actually shows the problem and the fix.
On my '14 1500 I simply unplugged the connector and now just lock/unlock the tailgate manually,I did it last year when guys were starting to have problems with'em.The tailgate shouldn't be locking or unlocking when the doors do.
Its all about adding more gizmos to help sell vehicles. I see no reason for it.....the bed is open. If you want to steal something...reach inside and grab, the lock doesnt serve any purpose unless you have a bed cover and they have their own locks as well in my opinion
I have a 2016 ram sport, I had the really work done in 2018 but it's falling open again. Apparently if you've had it dome once then your on the hook to get it done after that. So much for their recall work. I'll see if I can get the part and do it myself( can't be any worse than a dodge mechanic) . Thanks for your video!
I had the recall repair done by the dealer. Come to find out my tailgate wouldn't locked with the remote or door locks. After watching this video, I found they had installed 2 of the recall rubber pieces instead of 1. So the actuator wouldn't travel in far enough to lock the tailgate. After removing 1 and leaving one rubber stop, my tailgate now locks.
I have seen that happen before and since I double check it. I bet someone did it before and they never did the paperwork for it to show finished. Either way....great catch. Thanks for commenting and make sure to subscribe
At the moment my dealership is on a ration system where we can only order 10 stops every 10 days not sure if other dealers are on this but it's hard to perform recalls without parts lol
Is there a recall on Ram 1500 tailgate 2020 ? Sometimes the tailgate want open without pulling it by hand and then want close unless you move it to one side or the other to get to close.
This looks like a band aid fix . So what breaks now the actuator arm or does the actuator just burn it's self up? Great video of how to install the part though you detailed it so anyone should be able to perform the repair themselves.
After looking at this repair piece and doing about 40 or more so far.....I feel it will be fine. Its to prevent over travel and that rubber block does that well. Time will tell like everything else....so far no repeat failures. Thanks for watching and for the feedback. Make sure to subscribe
Process only takes about less then 15mins. BUT the actual time dealing with at the dealer required you take a day off. You can't do it on your lunch break because you'll be in the lobby for hours. Just give me the rubber block piece and I'll do it myself.
Yeah the size of the dealer seems to make the difference. At our shop its pretty much in and out in less then 30 minutes for that recall if no other work is done. Other dealers its hurry up and wait as you mentioned.
I have had my tailgate pop open several times and even lost things out of the back. Does this mean the metal stopper is broken and needs to be replaced as well? Or will the rubber recall piece make it so the metal stopper is unnecessary?
Even if the metal piece is broke off....the rubber stopper will fix the issue and the metal piece will never come into play. Thanks for asking Darrell.
My 2015 Dodge Ram 1500 tailgate opens when the tailgate auto lock happens about 50% of the time interestingly it does not open or it hasn’t happened yet if when stopped before I leave I lock the truck myself , thanks for the video
Can anyone provide a part # or a link to where I can buy that piece. I refuse to go to dealer,,this is such an easy fix. Just need that rubber part..thanks in advance.
Most dealers will provide you with any upgrade parts however if they don't do the work they usually charge for the parts. I would assume that dodge will be the only place to get it since it is a recall.
I already had the recal done, but the damage was already done on my tailgate. Driving down the highway with a trailer and tailgate opened and hit the handle for the landing gear on the trailer...
@@MotorCityMechanic i already talked to the dealer and after they did the recall, their body shop took pic for estimate of the damages and they will contact me when to bring in the truck for repair in the body shop. It scratched the plastic and the tailgate paint.
My 2017 Ram 2500 4x4 short bed came with the factory sprayed in bed liner. Will there be any damage or noticeable affects to the liner while performing this recall. I've already had numerous issues with prior recall updates and wish there was a way to get my money back from the purchase of this truck.
@@keithdumas696 When they sprayed the bed with the liner....they removed that panel and sprayed it separately so they dont get sprayed over at the same time. They wont have any issues getting them apart for the recall so you should be fine.
Chrysler notified me that parts were available, so i scheduled an appointment, took off a half a day of work. Only to find out when I got to the dealer, they did not have any of the parts to fix. Total waste of my time. I love my RAM, but hate the dealers. Both dealers in my area SUCK!!!!! Because of that fact, i will never buy another RAM.
I'm sorry they dropped the ball like that....not cool at all. They should have stepped up and made it right....free gas...free oil change....something. I can fully understand where your coming from and it sucks when the dealers put the bad taste in peoples mouths when it comes to the brand. Let me be the first to apologize to you for what its worth.
Yeah they have moved to the next phase that includes the ones not addressed in this first recall. I believe its now Recall V44......my mind forgets alot. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Dont forget to subscribe.
Hi David. I had to remove my tailgate to replace the rectangular red light below the tailgate. When I put the tailgate back on it doesn’t lay all the way flat. I can’t figure out what I did wrong. It a 2017 Ram 3500 Laramie.
Both the factory and aftermarket liners are sprayed on with the access cover off and the cover sprayed separately. Havent had any issues so far because of that. Thanks for asking and for watching.
So there was a recall that affected 2015-2017 and the SAME THING is still happening!? I have a 2022 and the tail gate started falling open from day 1. Had it in 3 times including once after the latest tailgate recall and it's still falling open and will not lock. Is it the same fix as you describe in this video?
Troublesome: Stellantis is recalling about 1.4 million pickup trucks worldwide because the tailgates may not close completely and cargo could spill onto the road. The recall covers Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups from the 2019 to 2022 model years.
David, I have a 2012 Ram 3500 4x4 cumins. With the service 4 wheel drive system light on. What do I need to check or repair to get the light to go off. The 4 wheel drive works. Thanks Walter
I assume you are talking about v06? It has been launched and now you can get it done at your local dealer. I havent had to do one yet.....we have a different group of guys doing them so they have been knocking them out.
I’m convinced there’s an engineering department called “cheap fixes” who’s whole job is fixing things as cheap as possible under warranty. They’re probably also the people who cut warranty times when a faster method to do the job is found.
Hey Kevin, going to need more info. I am looking for something like C1023 or along that line. Thats the code number I need to fidn out what is going on.
I hope so it will literally take minutes to knock out vs 2 hours at the stealership ill gladly pay 10 bucks just to walk in and out? I hope dave chimes in cuz they (dealership) is guna want do it to get warranty pay and not worth it for me and would just like it to be done. All we need is a part #
Any ideas as to why the 8' bed is not included in this recall? My '15 Laramie long bed had this issue but I fixed it a piece of scrap steel and $0.25 in hardware. I called FCA and all they would say is my truck isn't covered. The folks answering the phones over there definitely aren't techs. Excellent videos BTW. Very educational. Keep them coming.
I'm curious, why does not affect the long bed trucks? where can that piece be found? if I wanted to purchase separately. thanks for the update on the trucks, keep up the GOOD work!!👍👍🍻
so people are kind of screwed if they have a bed liner like LineX all sprayed in, pretty much requiring the entire plate or most of if to be grinded down to pry up. no wonder why my dealer couldnt fix this issue, or atleast it seems they didnt try because my tailgate looks perfectly fine and untouched with no bed coating missing.
If its a plastic bedliner....typically the plastic tailgate protector uses the same bolts as the access panel so when removed, you have both covers off. With sprayed on....every reputable company that sprays the bedliners on....removes the bolts and the access cover and sprays the tailgate. Then they spray the access cover separately and then reinstall everything. That way the cover can be removed. Now if the company that did it was lazy or half ass.....well thats a different story. I remove the access covers on trucks with bedliners all the time and never had any issues. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Make sure to subscribe.
got my 2016 done at the dealership, and the cruise control something or other 2 months ago recall. Did my own oil change from conventional 5w30 to full syn Pennzoil 5w20 and now my MPG is dropping off do you know why? from 17.6 to 16 .5 oil filter is Mobil 1 ye 8 speed hockey puck selector.
Thanks for the video! I know the recall is for 15-17 Rams, but I have a 12 Ram that I installed the factory power tailgate lock kit on. Would the add-on kit need the recall part or are the actuators different? Not sure if pre-15 Rams could come with tailgate locks or not or if the 15-17 had a different design. Just don't want my tailgate coming open. Thanks!
Kent Wicker I’m in the comments for the same question. Hopefully we get an answer for those who just want the rubber block. I may just make one at home. Seems simple enough.
When I say extend.....that term just means traveling too far.....in "either direction". The issue is when linkage is pulled too far back into the body of the actuator. The rubber block stops it from pulling too far back inside. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for watching.
Good evening, maybe you can help me. I've been having 2 issues with my Ram 1500 Hemi 2011. The rear passenger side lock, is not unlocking, it does auto lock when the speed is reached. The other issue is that sometimes when I start it, it won't start in the 1st try, will do.it in the second try, it's happening more frequently lately.
I recommend around 60k miles. Thats the best interval in my opinion. 30k would be even better but 60k is ideal. Thanks for asking Catherine and for watching. Make sure to subscribe,
There is no way to unhook it without setting the check engine light. There may be some aftermarket programmers on the market that might be able to do away with it.
I recommend the dealer installing this piece being that its a Recall and being safety related. There are places online selling it however....www.tascaparts.com/oem-parts/mopar-actuator-stop-block-68448027aa
Dealers arent suppose to sell recall parts. There are only a few online dealers showing the part so its worth a try if you want to go down that road. I still recommend having the dealer do it. www.stockwiseauto.com/mopar-68448027aa
@@MotorCityMechanic For sure understand. Trying to figure out a camera/wiring issue. The recall part would take few seconds to swap at this point. Thank you for the info. Great videos. Appreciate the info you share. Very detailed.
I have a 2014 Laramie and my tailgate dropped several times. If the dealer won't fix for some reason since they recalled 2015+, where can I buy that part at. Seems like a simple fix.

Had a friend with this problem but when he was towing a trailer the tailgate dropped and destroyed his tailgate when it hit the trailer jack. He had the truck less than 6 months. Will FCA make good on the damage the recall caused?
Nope, my fathers and his doesnt fall in the recall list. I just borrowed a recall part from the parts department to do a demonstration on his vehicle for the video and then removed it and gave it back to the parts department.
Sorry for the double video launch....caught some editing issues after the fact and had to make it right.

So there was a recall that affected 2015-2017 and the SAME THING is still happening!? I have a 2022 and the tail gate started falling open from day 1. Had it in 3 times including once after the latest tailgate recall and it's still falling open and will not lock. Is it the same fix as you describe in this video?
They told me there was no fix available at this time while I had my 2016 2500 cummins in for 3 other recalls.
We have been doing them for the last 2 weeks. Looks like they are starting to go to back order in places.
@@MotorCityMechanic likely so I'm in Arizona. Ran my own auto diesel Corp from 98 to 2013. These things happen . Thanks for the reply.
Troublesome: Stellantis is recalling about 1.4 million pickup trucks worldwide because the tailgates may not close completely and cargo could spill onto the road. The recall covers Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups from the 2019 to 2022 model years.
Bro where i get that little piece? Thanks nice video very professional
David, I have a 2012 Ram 3500 4x4 cumins. With the service 4 wheel drive system light on. What do I need to check or repair to get the light to go off. The 4 wheel drive works. Thanks Walter
is there a part number for this? my truck isn't under the recall
Have you ever had a tailgate opener not work, I can hear the motor run but it does not open
Great video! Thanks for sharing!
Your welcome Philip. Thanks for watching
Any news with recall on steering linkage heavy duty rams?
I assume you are talking about v06? It has been launched and now you can get it done at your local dealer. I havent had to do one yet.....we have a different group of guys doing them so they have been knocking them out.
Where do I buy that rubber recall piece from?
My 2015 started that a couple months after I bought it. I disconnected the wires to the tailgate lock. I didn't care for that option anyways.
Mine still falls after the recall was done.
I would have them recheck it to see if there is another issue or is this "fix" isnt working. Thanks for watching.
Thank you David. Good job.
Gotta love getto fixes by manufacturers😕 and that is not a rip on just FCA, They all do it😤
Flat Rate Master low cost fix. That’s all they ever care about. I do these all day long. Pays .2
I’m convinced there’s an engineering department called “cheap fixes” who’s whole job is fixing things as cheap as possible under warranty. They’re probably also the people who cut warranty times when a faster method to do the job is found.
@@halopersin the less money you make the more they make
maxintater I’m aware.
@@halopersin hell yeah take that warrant pay right in the butt
Do you have any idea how to fix a c code 06 on a Dodge ram 1500
Hey Kevin, going to need more info. I am looking for something like C1023 or along that line. Thats the code number I need to fidn out what is going on.
@@MotorCityMechanic all I get on the instrument cluster I 06 00 what I found out myself is it's something to do with the mil light
@@kevinmoorhead6734 Not sure what that is or what that means. Going to need a scanner to get to all the modules.
Can I just get the part myself and do it instead of the hassle of taking it to the shop?
I would like to know as well. Anything to avoid going to the stealership

Are you trying to sound like ChrisFix?
Any ideas as to why the 8' bed is not included in this recall? My '15 Laramie long bed had this issue but I fixed it a piece of scrap steel and $0.25 in hardware. I called FCA and all they would say is my truck isn't covered. The folks answering the phones over there definitely aren't techs.
Excellent videos BTW. Very educational. Keep them coming.
I have yet to hear why they aren’t. I’m curious but can’t seem to find anyone that knows. Thanks for watching and for the kind words Sean!
@@MotorCityMechanic 8' beds now included
You’re a good man!!!!
Thanks man! Much appreciated
How can I check recalls for my 2010 dodge ram 1500
Thanks for the video! I know the recall is for 15-17 Rams, but I have a 12 Ram that I installed the factory power tailgate lock kit on. Would the add-on kit need the recall part or are the actuators different? Not sure if pre-15 Rams could come with tailgate locks or not or if the 15-17 had a different design. Just don't want my tailgate coming open. Thanks!
Kent Wicker I’m in the comments for the same question. Hopefully we get an answer for those who just want the rubber block. I may just make one at home. Seems simple enough.
What's a good dealer level scan tool for late model Cummins motors? Under $1000. Want to monitor/regen dpf and injection system. Thanks
If that metal tab is broken off, they have to remove the internal assembly? I called the dealer and they said no
Not sure I understand how putting that in stops the actuator from extending to far. Looks like it does nothing at all.
When I say extend.....that term just means traveling too far.....in "either direction". The issue is when linkage is pulled too far back into the body of the actuator. The rubber block stops it from pulling too far back inside. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for watching.
Understand now. Thank you for clearing that up.
Your welcome William
ANY FIXES FOR THE AIR SUSPENSION IN COLDER CLIMATES ? 2016 RAM REBEL
Havent seen any issues so far. I will keep an eye out.
Does anyone know where I can buy the recal part? My tailgate just started opening when I lock it.
I'd like to just grab the part and do it myself. Local Dealers are !@#$%^holes.!
I have to say that I dont blame you
Easy recall. Love your videos ! I have service writers doing these for me :D
Very easy indeed! Thanks for following the channel and for commenting!
Great video and thanks for the heads up on the recall.
What is the 8 ft box difference to the other ones ?
I have been trying to get some info on that but no luck so far.
Hey David at what mileage should I change my trams fluid 0n a 2008 3.5 chager
I recommend around 60k miles. Thats the best interval in my opinion. 30k would be even better but 60k is ideal. Thanks for asking Catherine and for watching. Make sure to subscribe,
Nice one Dave.
Can that piece be ordered?
Great video
Thanks Antonio!
My name is John and I have a 2015 Ram Power Wagon and I was wondering if you know any way to completely disconnect the MDS on the truck.Hate it!!
There is no way to unhook it without setting the check engine light. There may be some aftermarket programmers on the market that might be able to do away with it.
Why are 2014 models not in the recall? Is there mechanism different? I'd open mine up but I'm 1200 miles away from my baby.
I dont know.....it appears they narrowed it down to a certain year range. They didnt give us any other reasoning. I guess time will tell.
My 2014 tailgate dropped several times. Gonna see if they will cover under warranty.
I am curious how many fall outside the year range like some other recalls we have had over the years. Guess we will have to see what happens.
Quick question if you don’t mind. I’ve a ‘14 Ram 1500 short bed Laramie Longhorn. Should I be concerned? Thank you. This was sold in Alberta.
Want to fix it myself, where do the sell this part? Thx
I recommend the dealer installing this piece being that its a Recall and being safety related. There are places online selling it however....www.tascaparts.com/oem-parts/mopar-actuator-stop-block-68448027aa
Great video. Anywhere to buy this part? Unless I'm blind and can't see it in the comments. thx
Your welcome Michael and thank you!
Good job
Appreciate in Timothy!
I have a 2013 Ram 2500 that has the power lock tailgate How come they weren't affected by this?
They havent mentioned why the difference. It could be their research on the ones that they found failed...only they know at this point.
I have a 2014 Laramie and my tailgate dropped several times. If the dealer won't fix for some reason since they recalled 2015+, where can I buy that part at. Seems like a simple fix.
Dealers arent suppose to sell recall parts but there are a few sites online offering it....feel free to try. Here is a couple of links and the part number is shown as well: www.tascaparts.com/oem-parts/mopar-actuator-stop-block-68448027aa and www.stockwiseauto.com/mopar-68448027aa

Your welcome.
Had a friend with this problem but when he was towing a trailer the tailgate dropped and destroyed his tailgate when it hit the trailer jack. He had the truck less than 6 months. Will FCA make good on the damage the recall caused?
Its worth calling them to find out. I dont know personally but it never hurts to try.
Yeah that's what I told him. Thanks

when you pull the plug the back up camera is disable.
Brewer's hat nice
Appreciate you noticing.....glad to see them doing well!
Will they give me the part and do it myself?
Its a recall and they are required to do the repair.
Great videos... have you made a video on the recall Break Transmission Shit Interlock for ram 3500?
2slowt67 D, yes he has
Can’t seem to find it
2slowt67 D, it was published on January 14, 2018 and is titled FCA Recall T79 Information. th-cam.com/video/sAELEv7XTZc/w-d-xo.html
2020 dodge ram 2500 has the same problem will open by itself also at times it will not but you will the actuators making noise
is that ur truck ur working on
Nope, my fathers and his doesnt fall in the recall list. I just borrowed a recall part from the parts department to do a demonstration on his vehicle for the video and then removed it and gave it back to the parts department.
