Why No One Smokes In Sweden

- As governments around the world strive to reduce smoking rates, Sweden has become a controversial case study in how best to do so. As of 2022, only 5.6% of the population still smoked. That’s the lowest percentage in Europe. Many give credit to snus, small nicotine-filled pouches placed under the lip. Snus makers say they’re safer than cigarettes. But policymakers and health advocates are divided over their use.

The point of the debate is this:
In a perfect world no one would ever use substances that are addictive. But we do not live in a perfect world.
For some reason, humans love the kick of nicotine. So why not give people the least harmful way of consuming it?
If cigarettes would be erased, and snus took its place, it would literally save MILLIONS of lives every year.
You couldn’t explain it better, damn that was good
sugar its adictive, cafeine its adictive, salt its adictive...
When you have something more convenient to consume, it attracts more people. When you have one addiction it is easier for you to get another one. But I agree, this stuff is much better to have in the world than cigarettes.
Ciggarette and medical companies earn too much to make it safer
bruh snus is also super harmful, I think even vaping is better
I prefer my nicotine delivered by IV drip.

Try suppositories. They hit just as quick and make your farts smell like mint

only thing that determines my happiness is how much sleep i got last night
I've always been able to take or leave alcohol, but cigarettes are a bitch.

"Sweden low smoking rates is due to restrictions emplaced in the 90s" - That is a blatant lie!
The statement that Sweden's low smoking rates are due to restrictions implemented in the 90s is not entirely accurate. While it's true that Sweden implemented comprehensive tobacco control regulations in the 1990s, including the Swedish Tobacco Act in 1993 that banned smoking in public transport and public indoor places[4], the decline in smoking rates in Sweden began even before these regulations were put in place[4][7].
Moreover, the low smoking rates in Sweden are not solely due to these restrictions. The use of snus, a smokeless tobacco product, is prevalent in Sweden and is thought to have contributed to the low rates of cigarette smoking[1][9]. Snus has been legally sold in Sweden since 1976 and is used as an alternative to cigarettes[10].
Furthermore, the decline in smoking rates in Sweden has been a continuous trend over time, rather than a sudden drop following the implementation of restrictions[1]. Therefore, it's more accurate to say that the low smoking rates in Sweden are due to a combination of factors, including tobacco control regulations, the prevalence of snus use, and broader societal trends.

In america we need more restrictions, so we can have more kids living, but politicians don’t like that
@Ottophil that should fall under the parents duty, not the goverment.
I went from Cigs to snus to straight up quitting finally. Still get the craving occasionally but those pouches helped me finally quit the god damn smoking habit. I see a lot of comments saying "but mouth cancer" no shit sherlock literally everybody knows that its like when you tell a smoker they're gonna get lung cancer they fucking know
Edit: Every reply is telling me that there's research that says you cant get mouth cancer so its probably true. I'm personally still not gonna use again but hey if you want to go for it.
Yeah, it’s bad enough when people feel the need to tell others who are addicted to dangerous substances things that they obviously already know, but the amount of people who fear monger about using snus, vapes, etc. as a harm reduction alternative to smoking is a whole other level of ignorance imo. It’s like if you went to the local needle exchange to tell all the opioid addicts “y’know that stuff can kill you, right?”, like, would you rather they die from untreated needle-borne diseases like hep-c or overdosing because they didn’t have any Narcan, instead of taking steps that might help them live long enough to actually get treatment? It’s like they’d rather have the smug satisfaction of being “correct”, instead of just letting people use incremental, common sense approaches that will most likely benefit them in the long run.
False. Snus used to have labels on the cans that said that it may cause cancer, but it had to be removed because there's no proof of that claim. Now the warning label says that snus includes nicotine and is highly addictive, which is true.
Good hygiene = no mouth disease
Same here. I switched six months ago, after smoking for 30 years (since my early teens). It's not ideal, but I bet the risks with snus are magnitudes lower. Also, waaay cheaper! Especially if you get the "DIY snus" bags.
@@pistolen87 snusing constantly corrodes your gums, that in itself increases odds for cancer.
i have been snussing for a long time. it genuinely helps me with stress, anxiety but I wouldn't wish this addiction upon anyone.
I quit smoking cigarettes almost 10 years ago and apart of me misses that buzz you get from the first one but i wanted to save my lungs and my money , this talk about snus and even ZYNs being “not as bad as cigarettes “ had me curious but everything I read about it people say don’t do it if you aren’t addicted already
@@Neptune8 I'm really proud of you cause you stopped smoking it takes a lot of courage. snus is also bad for the health especially for the heart and it's very unhygienic and makes you have a really bad breathe.
I used snus to quit smoking 10 years ago. I absolutely loved it, personally I found it incredibly addictive. It kept me calm and feeling relaxed. I would crave the feeling it gave me constantly. to this day I still find myself wanting to buy a tin, just thinking about it now I’m half tempted to buy some.
Almost only immigrants smoke in Sweden. It is a great tell, if you are smoking you are likely on the lower end of payment and social ladder.
Snus is not only in packages, traditional snus is pure loose tobacco.
the loose is nasty tho
" if you are smoking you are likely on the lower end of payment and social ladder"
But Cigarettes are quite expensive... At least if you dont make them (roll, f.e.) yourself. Here in Germany it's like at least 6 € a pack.

Yeah let's take the most wealthy country and brag about how healthy the people are lmao
Snus causes less cancer but you can contantly have it under your lip thruout the entire day, causing an even more intense nicotine addiction. Also there's acid in the pouches that dissolve part of the inside of your mouth so the nicotine can get into your blood stream faster. The acid is (suprisungly) not good for your teeth. I'm swedish and when I was 16 three years ago pretty much all of my classmates were using tocacco free snus (it was legal for ages 16 and up). A few years later a lot of them couldn't even go a week without it and if they succeded they celebrated with more snus. They even got part time jobs to fund their habits. Still better than cigarettes I guess

15% used snus? Im not sure if its a class issue but almost everyone i know uses snus, including myself. I quit smoking about 7 years ago and started using snus instead. The addiction is very strong, periods when i stopped using snus i couldnt sleep and was constantly cold-sweatting. Way better than smoking tho, i can run and crosscountry ski and my cardio is good even tho im a tobacco abuser. Snus should be used as a way to quit smoking, the benefits of using snus are not outweighting the downsides most of the time. Its also an economic question, i spend about 1000kr/month or 100ish euro/month on snus wich is not to high, i know people that spend 2-4 times that per month.
You should have added a segment on what dentists think. Spoiler alert: dont use that.
There is still tons of cigarette smoke everywhere, especially rude people at bus stops
Why do governments think of banning something like pouches? Even banning vaping altogether is a bad idea, but at least the potential for more unrecognized risks is higher. Nicotine pouches are more similar to things like patches and gum, which, as far as I know nobody's thinking of trying to ban, although restrictions wouldn't surprise me.
Because of tobacco companys
I would blame this to the us and UK on how ruined tobacco image permanently
@@jhon-cg4rgbut those very same tobacco companies own snus and tobacco-free nicotine pouches in the US. So it’s not due to them
Because tobacco causes cancer
i saw it in Bloomberg orignal why Bloomberg re-upload same stuffs again and again
I've been badly addicted to vaping since 2016 and it's thanks to nicotine pouches that I've finally been able to quit. I don't even crave vaping at all anymore because I enjoy nicotine pouches way more and I never thought I would find an alternative that I would enjoy more than vaping and make me quit vaping because I have tried so many different types of nicotine replacement therapy. I don't know why the EU would want to ban a really good form of harm reduction. This is why I'm glad Brexit happened.
Because cigarette companies got lobbyists
That's because they didn't hear of FÜM yet :)
Tried snus about 25 years ago and it was awesome
Ive been snussing for a bit while now, probably cause my grandad snus (lös) and my dad tho. Helps with stress, gives you a lot of energy at some point and its cheap and doesnt bother anyone around you, thats the best thing of snus, anywhere anytime.

People getting addicted to snus and getting horrific mouth cancers is not a positive thing
snus and nicotine pouches are for adult nicotine users only. Snus does not increase the risk for oral cancer. This was concluded in a Karolinska Institute study following 418 000 Swedish men during 30 years (9,2 million life years). The study concluded that normal snus use ie 4 cans/boxes per week reduced the realtive risk of oral cancer with 35% as compared to never-snus-users.
There is no evidence that Snus is causing mouth cancer.
Such a narrow-minded thought. I've been using for 15+ years and my mouth and teeth are in perfect condition, no signs of any diseases, gum problems etc. I'm glad I quit smoking thanks to pouches.
