Ralph's problem is he moved way too fast and set himself up for failure, and as a result ended up humiliating not just himself, but Lisa in the process.
He’s coded as autistic and this was presumably the first time he received any sort of attention romantically (even if that wasn’t Lisa’s intention). We all either know someone like this or have been there ourselves. It was nice and realistic how they portrayed it.
Chuu Etteck My R Actually, there was another episode that centered around Ralph. It was “This Little Wiggy” from Season 9. After seeing Ralph get tormented by the bullies, Marge feels sorry for him, and to Bart’s chagrin, makes him befriend Ralph.
I always loved episodes like this, that focused on minor/secondary/tertiary characters like Ralph or Patty or Otto and gave them more of a backstory. It made the Simpsons world feel more realistic and relatable. Do you (or anyone else reading this) know of any other episodes like these in the seasons after 8? I stopped watching after the golden years.
@jess9848 That's true since at the end of the episode she wrote him a card that they should be friends and when she said that she doesn't like him and never liked him, he took it as she hates him completely not wanting to be friends when maybe she should have said, "listen, I only like you as a friend only and nothing more than that and that Valentine card I gave you was because you didn't get one, not because I wanted to be your girlfriend which I never was interested in."

In middle school, I've had a crush on this one girl, and I've liked her a lot, so much I wanted to be in the same class as her next year because she transferred to a different class later on that year. I even said to another student in her earshot that I've liked her. But the sad thing is she never crushed on me back. The second time, I was forcing myself onto someone. Next thing you know, everyone was rooting for me to ask my date to be my girlfriend and they were also looking at my date. I was reluctant to, but then I eventually complied. She said yes, and everyone at my table was cheering us on. Later on, she asked if I was desperate for her, I admitted yes, even if I knew deep down she wouldn't really go for me. She also said she wasn't ready for me and admitted she didn't want to hurt my feelings, as we were both under a peer pressure moment. I later told all of my table friends weeks after that we weren't really dating because they had me and her in a pressurizing moment and we only meant to please them. I also said we would have to get to know each other first before we actually consider ourselves boyfriend-girlfriend. Lisa did nothing wrong. Ralph was the one who got the wrong idea, Lisa only gave him the valentine out of pity. On top of that, he’s the one who embarrassed Lisa.
I like that Ralph has a spotlight episode early on in the show when the writers were still trying to figure out what to do with his character. He is three-dimensional here instead of just a one-liner character.
@@thejuiceisloose7 Yes, she did. Her exact words in one scene were "I think you're really nice, but, I'm just not ready yet". And yet, he didn't take the hint and grasp that no means no.
This is when the show really hit its stride and kept it up for about another 6 or 7 seasons. Then the show tanked big time and I haven't watched a new episode in over 15 years.
I can relate to Lisa’s awkward situation. There was this girl I went to middle school with over 15 years ago. Most of the guys were being a douche to her & making her do humiliating stunts. However, I didn’t caved into that temptation since I’m not the bully type & unfortunately I was doomed from the start. Some people said I should go out with her, why am I ignoring her, admin hovering over me, & all of ours teachers made us sit next to each other in class. She didn’t get the message to leave me alone, wouldn’t quit stalking me at school, & the school didn’t do jack shit. When I finally lost my shit in class, one day. I got a referral, weeks detention, & almost faced expulsion. At least Lisa didn’t break Ralph’s heart at school & thank god that creepers parents didn’t cause me drama. Moral of the story: don’t be a douche, without showing any type of pitty.
Something similar happened to me as well. I know how awkward it is to have someone you don't like, stalk and follow you. I never got in trouble, but this student would follow me, and if I felt like being alone, that student would tell the teacher. They would say that I have to be with this person. I would tell my dad and he would try to tell the school for this person to leave me alone. I also was put in a group with this person, and I would do all the work. The school did not do anything. When I got to middle school, this got better, but I was still put in a group with this person more than I wanted to. Thank God that we went to different high schools! The person was kind of a bully, but also got bullied. Almost nobody liked her. I was not a fan of her, but I was not mean. I would be nice to her, but she would not leave me alone. She had to be with someone all the time. The school tried to force a relationship between us, but that never worked.
Um, yes he did. Lisa tried to let him down gently, but he wouldn’t take no for an answer. Lisa had no choice but to be brutally honest. Besides he embarrassed Lisa on tv, so he got it back in return. Ralph deserved it.
@@Ronin.Samurai Ralph didn't deserve it. Lisa made him think he has a chance, his father give him a bad advise, and Ralph isn't bright enough to get the hint.
@ no, Ralph definitely deserved it. He may not be bright, but he isn’t stupid. Lisa did not make him he had a chance, she gave plenty of hints she didn’t want to be with him. He didn’t take the hints, and in the end, he had to have his heart broken to get through to him. All Ralph did was harass, and annoy Lisa. This is all Ralph’s fault. Lisa did nothing wrong.
@@Ronin.Samurai No. It's all Lisa's fault, for wanting to make herself feel better at helping someone. Don't blame Ralph for something Lisa did that blow up in her face.
@ no, it’s Ralph’s fault. Lisa did nothing wrong. It’s Ralph’s fault for not taking the hints, harassing Lisa, and annoying her. You’re just another Lisa hater who refuses to accept the facts and truth.
0:14 lol Over 20 years later and I STILL remember how sad i felt for Ralph here.. that little "Oooo-ooo--oo" sigh of grief he does gets me every time.. I Still do it in remembrance of this scene when I'm overly stressed about shit 😂😂😂
Damn. I feel the same way that Ralph was feeling. I had a crush on my high school friend but she didnt feel the same way. I then realize I though I was in love with her, but I realize that I was just desperate because I was sick of being alone all the time. I dont know what to do.
Everyone’s like “poor guy” and yeah it is sad but they’re just kids. Kids shouldn’t be dating. Not till they’re a little older enough anyway. At least Lisa was trying to be nice and gave him a Valentine’s card.
This is one of those classic Simpsons moments were you forget about it for like 20 years and then someone shares a gif of it and it all comes back too you.
I have definitely been on both ends of this type of situation. The side where I had liked the guy and he didn’t like me back then on the other side, the guy I didn’t want to like me ended up liking me, I kept telling him no and my reasons why I didn’t want to date him, after trying to reject him Nicely I had to flip out on him so he would stop asking me out
A brain doesn’t make you a good person it’s your heart that makes you into something far greater than smart it makes you into a good person that’s rare nowadays someone that has a heart
I can kinda relate to Ralph on valentines day. I don't get a single one, Not even from my friends and i only get one. I bet you can guess who it was from.

I feel bad for Ralph, he has a really sweet heart and doesn't mean any harm and Lisa did him dirty like that.
Lisa did nothing wrong. Ralph was the one who got the wrong idea, Lisa only gave him the valentine out of pity. On top of that, he’s the one who embarrassed Lisa.
“Talk to the audience? Oh god, this is always death.”
I like that Ralph has a spotlight episode early on in the show when the writers were still trying to figure out what to do with his character. He is three-dimensional here instead of just a one-liner character.
I would give Ralph a Valentine's card he's so cute!
Hahaha that moment at the end, when she flips out on him, right after he says yes I do like her, and I'm going to marry her when I grow up lol.
Toy Santa I know right. I swear she should've told him that a long time ago.
lisa may be good with vocabulary and science, but she's not very... socially smart.
she's socially normal, but maybe she's not as clever as bart.
Killer Boy she tried to, but he wouldn't listen.
@@thomashuffman3237 No she did'nt
@@thejuiceisloose7 Yes, she did. Her exact words in one scene were "I think you're really nice, but, I'm just not ready yet". And yet, he didn't take the hint and grasp that no means no.
This is when the show really hit its stride and kept it up for about another 6 or 7 seasons. Then the show tanked big time and I haven't watched a new episode in over 15 years.
ant27 do you know what season this is from? & if there's any website we can see all the classics for free ?
Amanda Cassidy if you get the fx app you can watch any episode you want
Who ever came up or thought of bart's line. Needs a raise, no questions asked
‘you can actually pinpoint the second his heart rips in half’ *rewinds*
he acts so much like my brother
Ralph is so sweet towards Lisa he clearly sees her as more than a friend and probably would do anything for her
Ralph is so adorable omg
I love how the reference it's an unusually warm February because when the writers made the episode they messed up the environment
Krusty: Did I say something wrong?
this honestly breaks my heart so much.
Somehow, I saw a little of me when Ralph's heart got torn apart for the first time. That slow-mo reaction was spot on.
that Valentine that Lisa gave Ralph was funny and heart-warming
What did you do when you lost your shit? You didn't give details but it must have been bad to be punished.
W
So they let this girl harass you?
@@voluntarism335 Double standards.
Ralph gave everybody else one, but nobody gave him one and that just broke him.
So sad.
Like Robin Williams making so many people laugh while he goes through depression his whole life...
"Now you listen to me, I don't like you and I never liked you. The only reason why I gave you that stupid Valentine is because nobody else would.!"
Even if he is abit dumb
Ralph didn’t deserve that
Um, yes he did.
The scene where he keeps checking his valentine box and has none actually makes me want to cry every single time I see it.
"So do you like... stuff?" smooth 😂
Ralph was a real player. 😂
*and just like your love story its tragic and full of hurt feelings and scars that will never heal*
Ralph is such a good character
Love story tragic with hurt feelings and scars that will never heal. Lisa's view on love is heavily deep for an 8 year old.😂
Lisa definitely had more depth back then.👍
This isn't just nostalgia talking I really miss Lisa Simpson like this.
Damn. I feel the same way that Ralph was feeling. I had a crush on my high school friend but she didnt feel the same way. I then realize I though I was in love with her, but I realize that I was just desperate because I was sick of being alone all the time. I dont know what to do.
Press f to pay respects for Ralph
I adore this episode. I quote so many parts from it all the time
Ralph is precious 🥺
She broke his heart💔😥. Poor thing I feel so bad for him.😩
She done in in front of everyone on live tv.
He misunderstood😔😭
Instead I feel bad for Lisa , Ralph is annoying too much and it deserved to be left "on air" , someone should explain it to be polite
honestly I think she handled the situation quite well.
sometimes you have to be harsh, when a moron won't take a hint

“Nothing gets chocolate off” except for animators’ bad memory lol
Everyone’s like “poor guy” and yeah it is sad but they’re just kids. Kids shouldn’t be dating. Not till they’re a little older enough anyway. At least Lisa was trying to be nice and gave him a Valentine’s card.
@Acorn ?
Everyone feels bad for Ralph. I feel bad for liza

This hits so close to home...poor ralph
This is one of those classic Simpsons moments were you forget about it for like 20 years and then someone shares a gif of it and it all comes back too you.
"It was an unusually warm February 14th, so the children walked home without jackets."
I love how there's still leaves on the trees.
Ralph May be a bit dumb but he has a good heart
*it hurt my heart when Lisa rejects him.....*
*i hope Ralph will find someone better*
I have definitely been on both ends of this type of situation. The side where I had liked the guy and he didn’t like me back then on the other side, the guy I didn’t want to like me ended up liking me, I kept telling him no and my reasons why I didn’t want to date him, after trying to reject him Nicely I had to flip out on him so he would stop asking me out
0:27
him: “you choo- choo- ch-“
me: “chew bubblegum? yes sir I do.”
A brain doesn’t make you a good person it’s your heart that makes you into something far greater than smart it makes you into a good person that’s rare nowadays someone that has a heart
I don’t know which is harder to deal with. Rejecting a nice person or Getting rejected.
“It was an unusually warm February 14th, so the children walked home w/o jackets”
I can kinda relate to Ralph on valentines day. I don't get a single one, Not even from my friends and i only get one. I bet you can guess who it was from.
Was it from your mom?
For any one who wants to know, this is from season 6 episode 3
OMG wow 😱

she does like him very much but just a friend
Ralph is an amazing young lad
he’s smart and funny and clever and when he grows up he wants to be a police officer just like his dad
He embarrassed her on tv, so she had every right to do it back. Besides, she snapped because of Ralph being an idiot.
