  • Hello everyone! This week we are sharing with you one of our recent adventures with one of our oldest friends, Dennis Takalo, out here in Skandia. Dennis has been running this sawmill for over 44 years, and we wanted to share his knowledge and experience with you all. As always there are a LOT of moving parts out here at the railroad, and one of the future additions we to coincide with the only steam-operated flour mill in the country is a steam-operated sawmill. We are still working on our railroad update for you all and that will be releasing next week! We've been hard at work out here and the season is really starting to pick up. Thank you all for your continued support and we hope you enjoy another big part of our history out here!

It is cool 😎 to see the saw mill working. I see you took my idea 💡 to have a way to use some trees 🌳 from the land into your railroad.

I think the saw mill would be a great addition you could mill your own ties for the railroad and any other lumber you might need for other projects plus it would be really cool if he lived that close if possible leave the sawmill where it is and just build a spur to it to bring logs in and take finished lumber back

I wouldn't be surprised if that was their intent.. I've been wondering myself where all the ties are gonna come from to lay 1MILE+ of track lol. Just the caboose remodels alone, I bet that saw will get used a lot.

I also wonder if they have to be cedar or hemlock 🤔 I don't think pine would hold up, oak too expensive, maple impractical? I'm no wood expert, but maybe they'll explain at some point when they start posting vids of laying track.

@@bailey-critter interesting! why on curves is it worse? (I didn't google it, but I imagine you mean "spike killed" as in "oxidation seeded" from the iron spike?)

Great conversations being had here! And thank you for the comment. All options are being considered, but I think the most likely eventuality is (if Dennis sells us the mill) the sawmill will find a new home here, but Dennis will always have access to it. Though we're never opposed to having a good reason to put down some more track! As for where all the ties came from that we currently have, long story short I got them used from other railways up here. We may not get to use the mill or set it up until after the main line is finished, but it would be more than helpful to be able to produce our own ties out here.

Just found this site and love the content. Steam powered railroads and sawmills, there are few things for fun and interesting. Hope to visit your operations soon. One suggestion: editor, I love your choice of music but for the sake of us ol' timers with poor hearing please drop the music volume much lower so we can better understand and learn from what is being said during scenes where people are explaining what we are seeing. Thank you.

Thank you for your comments. We had that conversation already. We are still pretty new at this. There is a big learning curve for sure.

We're looking forward to any possibilities it will afford us should Dennis agree to sell it to us. With all the projects we have out here a sawmill would be beyond invaluable.
