    Awesome comparison...really well done. I own a DSMC2 RED and a Pocket 6K. I had always heard the chatter about how good the pocket cams are for their price point, and am beyond impressed with the Pocket 6K after using it for a couple months. Is the RED better?...yes, but the Blackmagic has no business being that close in quality at that price point. If BM had priced the 6K at twice what they did it would still be a good value.

    Tangent; Regarding the raw bit depths, and why the fewer bit codecs are close to Reds codec with more bits; braw and ProRes Raw are log curves, I.e. color/DR are compressed by curve into fewer bits before the compression stage. Red has a patent on raw linear video compressed codec (and a lot of lawyers), so no one else is implementing linear raw. So because the others manufacturers are using log, they have more information per bit. In the case of Sony and Atomos, the compressed log raw is created from 16 bit linear output of the camera, so effectively we know many raw codecs use 16bit linear as the input, it is only the output and how you get there that is very different.

    Great comparison. The P6k seems to hone in on what a filmmaker needs, and the Komodo has features that add value, of which the filmmaker may use on occasion, or not need them. The global shutter issue for shooting sports would be one of those must-have features for some, and thus a deal breaker. The Under 10k comparison, actually gives the 6k too much room to add expensive accessories, where for the same price as the Red one could add enough high-end components to diminish the utility of the Red at that same $8200 price point. An URSA mini G2 (with the $1000 EVF added) vs the Komodo would probably be a more fair comparison as the initial price point is about the same.

    Great comparison video Paule! What ISO did you use on the Komodo for the 120fps test. Maybe it was set too high? You can get a super clean image with a lower ISO setting. Even in very dark scenes. Maybe that's why it was THAT noisy!? Oh and did you apply chroma noise reduction in post for that shot?

    • @pauleporterdp
      @pauleporterdp  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Ivan :)
      On the 120p shot I’ve used ISO 800 which normally isn’t noisy on the Komodo. I also did blackshading when I set the camera to 120p and Chroma Noise reduction was enabled. :)

    Great video but looking at your pocket 6k it seem like you have the magic booster attached hence why the colour difference and the less sharpness from the pocket 6k, in my opinion i still think the Pocket 6k is better , the Komodo OS is slow and isn't quite there yet , also the lack or 60FPS , Dual Native ISO and anamorphic mode is something that made me pick the pocket 6k over the Komodo , because with a great DP and an excellent colourist you can get any look you want from both Camera, but the #Pocket6k is better

    i must say its pretty much neck an neck in terms of image quality. biggest differences are imo continous autofocus (RED) vs 1 time autofocus (BMPCC), EF vs RF mount, and file sizes (BMCC6K u can have BRAW in 1:3 too 1:12, dont know how big file sizes are on RED. also RED has better build quality but does that really matter much? not for me. • @RX793
      @RX793 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BMPCC6K - if wanting to spend less, good for pretty much anything but I wouldn't use it for making music videos or movies. Feels like even trying (color correction, ect) it just doesn't match up to the bigger cinema cams. The only videos I found online where it looks somewhat filmic are BlackMagic's own videos (who knows if they used their better cams). Has too much of a digital look to me. There's are things I noticed, like the way the sensor handles light and somehow it makes the bokeh have a blurry feel not pleasing with my eyes where the Komodo looks more natural and I don't ever think about at all when watching something. I feel like with BMPCC6k my eyes gets distracted by those two things. Maybe because my eyes are too sensitive and notice these things on my 10bit monitor, but not on the Komodo. But I have seen nice videos with BMPCC6k, I think for stuff like weddings, commercials, vlogging, interviews, documentaries, reality shows, video portraits. Plus the control is the best one but Red beats it on the app side.
      KOMODO - If wanting that film look everybody loves. Plus it has global shutter!! I mean, if you want the real filmic look on music videos and movies, then hands down it beats BMPCC6k. Or doing sports and not having to worry about that rolling shutter the pocket has.
      With BMPCC6k there are ways to mimic a 'global shutter' on BMPCC6k such as recording sideways on 6k, then turn it around and zooming in on postedit. But obviously not the same lol.

    • @FTGTapGod
      @FTGTapGod 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CedrickOlausson yes and no. The non-locking non-interchangeable RF mount was a terrible decision and makes lens choice and pulling focus difficult. I would almost not own it for that one reason.
      The global shutter is obviously useful if you need it, but you most likely don't need it most of the time and global shutter comes with its own problems, like noise.
      Speaking of noise, the Komodo is noisy. Especially pit against the extremely light sensitive F6. The F6 just performs better in more lighting conditions.
      I can't not mention R3D. It really is a huge win for the Komodo, but after I stopped shooting on RED and moved to the Alexa Plus I was shooting mostly ProRes anyways so I'm used to that workflow and it's not a trade-off I think about anymore.
      They are both viable, but I would much rather own the F6. I find the image to be cleaner and subjectively more appealing in the majority of conditions, interchangeable locking mounts is a must, the company itself is extremely communicative with it's users, and a bunch of other small differences that send me towards the F6 every time.

    I think their two different class of cameras
    Red Komodo is a better B cam to higher end reds
    Bmpcc6k is more for the budget friendly indie film maker cause the value you get for the price is insane,
    If your talking budgets don’t even consider the Red, get yourself 2 BM6k and call it a day, it will get the job done just fine, but if your doing commercial work those spec differences do matter their for I would invest in more industry standard gear, in that case the red would be great to have on the fly!
