Subaru's interpretation of "I joined rice cake" is pretty genius actually haha She has a good grasp of English to be able to think of such a translation for that phrase.
She was so used with nonsensical sentences used during holo official channel collab that she didn't even bother to think whether the sentence make sense or not lmao
I think this is exactly how people often use english for memes, and I just realized how much harder that makes learning the language nowadays 😂

I think Kiara just wanted to give them a win. They did good even though it wasn't perfect. I'm proud of them.

English is the only thing that scares Mio more than horror content.
As somebody that speaks English, that’s understandable.
In the US at least, mochi is still called mochi like sushi is still called sushi, and a rice cake is a crunchy, dry, flattened brick of puffed rice that's sold as a low calorie/gluten-free snack alternative
UK here, and we call those crunchy rice brick things rice cakes too. Made subaru's translation doubly funny!
It's the same in the UK.
The same in Germany, sushi is sushi and mochi is mochi (of course we have a non-english name for rice cakes. Its Reis Cracker, the litteral translation Reis Kuchen would be an actual cake made from rice-based-flour). But I think a lot of the older japanese dictionaries translate mochi as rice cake since mochi wasn't really a thing back then.
i would say more of a puck than a brick, when you say brick i think more of a rice crispy square, which is similar.
Mochi have been called rice cakes in English for a long time, but over the last 10-15 years or so as JP culture (read: anime) has gained more traction in the west it's slowly been phasing out in favor of mochi since, yes, we already have a different product called rice cakes lol

I think the reason Mio translated rice cake as sushi was because sushi is basically just moulded rice with toppings/fillings. Foreigners tend to associate sushi with seafood but sushi is actually the rice. So, translating sushi to rice cake kinda makes sense.
When I hear ‘rice cake’ I think of those very dry hockey puck things, but I don’t know if they have them in Japan.

Either "sushi" or "mochi" could both be "rice cake" in technicality
But since we already have something called that, why not just yoink the words already being used for the others

I always kind of forget how good Subaru's English actually is. I'd actually say that she's one of the best in HoloJP. Koroneglish is something I've learned to understand from all the time spent watching her. Mio's is really cute, and her "are you hearing this shiitake" face after getting roasted had me cracking up.
Yeah, i just feel like with Subaru people don't notice as much her great English because of her voice and accent.

So much of this is adorable. The improv dance with Korone, Fubuki's folding ears, Korone's reaction to learning how much "I'm die, thank you forever" took off, even Miosha's consistent messing up the phrase (which is just telephone, really).
I also still can't get over how different Kira sounds when speaking Japanese, it's starting to make me wonder if I sound that different speaking German...
Subaru is insanely good at english, hilarious clip tho - I really loved seeing the interactions between everyone. Telephone is one of my fav games I see the Holomembers do ^_^
I mean, I wouldn’t say ”insanely good”. She’s got great english comprehension but her pronounciation needs a bit more work. Good but not insane.

It looked like a manga panel when Mio trying to say 'Quiet' into 'Crieded' and Kiara couldn't hold her self.
Kiara and Mio's interaction was so sweet, especially the parts where Kiara just starts roasting Mio's english language skills. You almost never see Mio in the position where someone is roasting her and the interaction was such a breath of fresh air.
I love that Mio is actually whispering in to Korone's dog-ears and not where her human ears would be. I wonder if that was intentional or if it just worked out like that because of how the models map on to the actresses' actual bodies.

I love these telephone repeat after me english phrase games. It's always more chaotic when there's an English speaker and I love the wholesome the JPs have with the ENs.
It's so much more fun because the worse English speakers can't deal with English without the Japanese accent. It's a lot harder for them.

I've gotta say that it's not only hilariously funny watching these girls do this but also absolutely fascinating when you see how they think form their ideas of what the different phrases mean. For example, I had no idea where "crieded" came from as a native English speaker but when Mio said that she thought the meaning was something about "sad crabs" then it made total sense to me. Also, the fact that Korone got "united" out of that which completely changed the meaning the sentence while also getting it back to something that actually made sense was quite awesome to see. The meaning of the sentence was completely changed but I honestly really appreciated the message that it gave off.
