That's actually how George lucas and mark hamil filmed it in the original trilogies. there's an interview where mark hamil demonstrated this

It wouldn't be possible with the way you had the lightsaber standing on end originally... unless you're really good at trick shots which I'm not... But I would of done that effect the same it was done the first time we saw that effect. Essentially the way it was filmed was with the lightsaber in Mark Hammil's hand to begin with and he throws the lightsaber into the snow. The shot was edited into the movie in reverse so it looks like it's being pulled from the snow and caught in his hand. No special editing software required.
That said if you're going to try it this way be careful not to break your prop when you throw it. You don't want to throw it too hard and try to have something soft for it to land on. In one of my videos where I was throwing props to myself the way I did that was tossing the props onto the couch just out of frame and then to make it look like the other me was catching the props I just tossed them in the air and caught them and cut out part of the footage just before the props would start to fall back into my hands.
I don't have after after effects so that's my cheap work work around.

Not bad, but make sure to mention the Motion blur settings (in the Advanced comp window) to make sure it matches the shutter speed of your camera. Also, see if you can correct that small jitter of the jump cut. Your reveal footage, in the beginning, told me exactly your technique because of that slight jump. Otherwise, great quality of a tutorial
I'm trying this myself. The original vid shows my brother walking towards me to hand me the lightsaber. How did he get his friend walking towards him out of the picture?

Bringing the screenshot to the lightsaber in AE is as far as I can go. When making the mask, everything else goes black when it's not soloed and if not, I can't even move the saber after masking it, and I have no idea how to get the person giving me the lightsaber out of the video. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Do you have any advice?

Couldn’t you just have a guy in a Green screen suit bring you the light saber, and then correct the green screen so it’s not there.
When I mask out the object (in this case the light sabre) once finished the screen goes black with just the object showing and I can't continue with the rest of the edit. Can anyone help?
At the bottom of your timeline on the left click the button that says toggle switches. Then on your clip you will se something that says normal. Click it and change it to "screen" done

Masking is soooooooooo hard and impossible for me to mask out the person who’s walking towards me to hand me the lightsaber.
Too much work when you get reduce all that down to camera shots. I usually do close ups and different camera angles. Then I just do a simple camera slate and mask.
Just reverse the footage baby 😉
