My fifth great grandfather was from Aberdeen and fought there with the Jacobites. He was a rare survivor being captured and imprisoned and eventually banished to the colonies of America. He died in Pennsylvania. My wife and I are heading to Scotland later this year to the battlefield. Thanks for the video!
North East Scotland provided a considerable proportion of the Jacobite army and many of that army were Episcopalian rather than the catholic highlanders that people are often led to believe. I too have evidence of NE jacobite ancestors at Culloden but they were killed (one of whom was just 14 years ) The atrocities carried out by the butcher Cumberland and the british government army extended far beyond the jacobites at Culloden or even the highlands.and were inflicted on men ,women and children .
The dirty secret of our (Scottish) history is how Highland clan culture was essentially a warlord system, on a par with Afghanistan or Italian mafia gangs. This is one of the many reasons why there were more Scots fighting against them at Culloden, that fighting for them. The world has an extremely romantic view of it all nowadays, thanks to Sir Walter Scott and the Victorians, and the real history is being hurried by ever-increasing sentimental mythology. You guys did better than most I've seen in presenting a balanced view, but you've still bought into the modern fairytale on many points. Nice video though. I always love to see people enjoying my country.
Hi Lokki, we really appreciate your comment and thoughts! It’s so true that in the modern day we romanticize certain parts of history - and that makes it harder to know the truth. Interesting how you compared clan culture to mafia gangs or Afghanistan, that makes complete sense and gives an entirely different idea. Thanks for giving us more info, and we’re glad to see we did an acceptable job. We love Scotland. All the best 😊
100% The tragedy of this period is why so many Scots followed a romantic fantasy which had zero chance of success, whilst the majority of their Fellow Scots followed a different course either from a political/religious or pragmatic standpoint. That the following 250 years witnessed a country which became the cradle of the enlightenment, education, scientific development and industrial innovation suggests that the good guys won.
Wooo thank you soo much for taking the time too explain too people watt Scottish history is about and for you too bee Americans thank you soo much hast yea back ❤
@@MariaOliviaTravel I always watch your vlogs😍😍😍...sorry even though sometimes I'm late.😣..huhuhuuumm....and I'm also annoyed that notifications on TH-cam aren't on time even though your channel is all "ON" .. for all your stories I love..especially the history of the places you visited..proud of you both..😘😘😘
Thanks for watching Pamela ❤️ Outlander has definitely helped reviving the interest! Reading the amount of Scottish tourism from before Outlander until now is extravagant.
Culloden (short "o". as in Scot) was 40 years before the colonisation of Australia. The clearances were because of economics, more modern agricultural methods made the highland tenant farms uneconomical. If Culloden played a part, it will have been through killing off some of the clan landlords. It was the Stuarts themselves who started cracking down on the clans. The English just provided the means for King James when he gained the throne of England in 1603 -36 years after he became king in Scotland.
Well ladies, I have watched various of your videos on your Scotland tour, and I really enjoyed them! You respected the country and did a great job of history in this video and before in Edinburgh. You shouod come back to Scotland because you have much to explore to the west and all over actually. I recommend April/May as a great period to visit Scotland - generally the weather is decent with sunshine, and it's just a bit too early for the *midges* to be out in any kind of force. Subscribed.
Extremely informative video, thanks. I'm looking forward to you both returning to Poland. I hope that you revisit Krakow, which has become one of my favourite Eastern European destinations.
Hi Gary! Thank you so much! We hope you enjoyed it. We didn’t return to Krakow but visited a few more special Polish cities with a local Polish episode as well! We hope you enjoy them 😄

I like to watch such historical content. You are able to learn so much more about a country.
Thanks Michael! We completely agree. Two of the best ways to learn about the country - history and it’s food.
Excellent video and excellent history lesson. Scotland is a sad legacy of bitterness and cultural upheaval
Hello! Thank you for the kind words! We’re honoured to share Scotland’s history and glad the sentiment has been reciprocated 💕
