CULLODEN BATTLEFIELD & Real OUTLANDER Stone Circle + Painting a Thistle In Watercolour - Ep27

  • Hello & welcome along on this walk! If you're new here - my name is Sarah and each week I head out on a walk with my faithful companion Jack Spaniels, to explore somewhere in this beautiful country of Scotland and hopefully find something to paint back in my studio at home.
Today we are visiting the site of the Battle of Culloden - the final battle in the notorious Jacobite risings of the 18th century and a truly momentous point in Scottish history. The battlefield stands as a lasting memorial to the hundreds of Scottish clansmen who gave their lives fighting for the Jacobite cause.
Outlander fans will be aware of the Battle of Culloden, as many of the main characters are poised to join this ill-fated battle in the story. To add to this connection, we continue our walk to the real-life inspiration for the mystical stone circle that transports the character Claire back in time to 18th century Scotland.
Outlander aside, this is an incredible historic site to visit. Join me as I explore the 4000 year old burial cairns and standing stones, weighing up to 10 tonnes each.
It only seemed fitting to paint a thistle, the national flower of Scotland, to commemorate my visit to Culloden. Watch the painting process unfold and see if I can bring this symbolic flower to life.
If you enjoyed this video and you haven't already, please check out my other videos - including the three special Skye episodes, where we explore some incredible Scottish scenery. Join me again next week as we explore somewhere else in Scotland and look for painting inspiration...

Started watching your channel sometime after the Holidays of 2022/2023. It's now nearly March 2023. I've been watching an episode a day! I am saving this episode for when I finally do get down to planning a trip to Scotland. 4000 years. My ancestors are from Scotland. To think of their lives 4000 years back. Interesting seeing Culloden Moor through your eyes. (KNEW you'd choose to paint the thistle. Who can resist a thistle in bloom!)

My husband and I were very lucky to have visited The Battle of Culloden site and the Clava Cairns. I found the battlefield eerie, as if the dead were still present. I loved the cairns. I love standing stone circles, having seen my first in Wales. I was pleased to have the peace after visiting the battlefield. It was nice to relive this visit while watching this video.

Atmospheric music Willie well done .. respectful coverage of a very wounding landscape which needlessly cost the blood of so many brave men who followed their heart's and not their heads . The Stewart"s were a bloody family who over many years cost this country ( Scotland and Parliamentary England ) dearly .. just.my opinion .. a family who would unite our Kingdom eventually . James V1 of Scotland and 1st of Britain . 🇬🇧

As an American, it might be hard to understand how sorrowful I find the history of Culloden, except that I understand the longing for freedom and the preserving of a culture. Scotland and the repercussions of the loss are heartbreaking. The attempted destruction of their lifestyle and then the Highland clearances were and are devastating. There is a spirit at Culloden that makes one want to whisper. So sad.

I visited Culloden and Clava Cairns in 1997. Also drove to Dunvegan Castle from Inverness and got a little turned around and drove on a cattle track (occupied by shaggy highland cattle) and by a wonderful crofter’s house. I’m 73 now and marvel at my courage in driving in the Highlands as an American driver. It was my journey of a lifetime. Wishing you the best .

Ahh you should most definitely visit if you can Elizabeth! I’ve visited Stonehenge before and it is incredible. Absolutely stunning work on the thistle, Sarah! When you add in those darks to amp up the contrast, it really brings the picture to life. Difficult to walk through the battlefield (or watch as you do it) and not feel sadness for the terrible loss for Scotland and its clans. The walk through the 4,000 year old standing stones and cairns was awe-inspiring. As you said, the skilled work going into moving and raising those stones and building the cairns is impressive.

Yep, been there, first time after reading the books, before the show, once after the show. The grass grows poorly over the clan graves. I didn't see those particular standing stones, but I did experience several others over my 2 trips to Northern Scotland. I'm hoping that I still have enough time (at 71!) and money to visit Norway & Northern Germany, lands of my Great-grandparents, so that I can quit fantisizing about Scotland...unforgettable land & people.---What a great quote..."just out of reach of our understanding".

Culloden 😢😢😢, I’m English and the battle of culloden never fails to reduce me to tears. I have such mixed feelings about it, as with all wars there are winners and losers, it isn’t that the Jacobites lost the battle but we as the English did after that. We literally stole, raped pillaged and stamped out the highland way of life, stamped out their mother tongue (Gaelic) stamped out the wearing of tartan. I am always so torn between the need to stamp out and prevent any further uprising and the shear brutality and Genocide (in my opinion) of it all.
War is only ever really told from the side of the winner so I am so thankful to outlander for bringing this to my attention because it really made me look into it deeper. And thank you for this exemplary video. Beautifully done, beautifully voiced over, respectful and unbiased.
I love your art, is there anyway I can purchase directly from you to help prevent the colossal cost Etsy charge you as the seller? X

I was fortunate enough to visit Gettysburg battlefield and Andersonville prison from our Civil war. But history is how we learn. There is a square here in Savannah, Ga that honors the Highlanders and Scottish troops that came to our city to help pry it from the English landholders. So our history is connected! In the middle of our state, is are several state parks that protects Native American settlements. There are Ocmulgee, Etowah, Kolomoki Mounds. Forgive my long post. But I love history and ancient peoples. I noticed the new music! It fits beautifully for your channel. I am always enthralled to watch you paint. So pretty. Thank you for taking us along.

Your painting is beautiful as the Thistle itself. I was told that parts of the thistle can be safely eaten. Dried thistles are also beautiful in dried flower arrangements.
Thistle grows here in Kentucky. It is not a native plant. My father said it came into Kentucky during the Civil War. Hay was brought from Canada to feed the Union's horses during the winters. Kentucky was divided during the Civil War. When I asked my father which way his people went (North or South during the Civil War), he told me they took back the old ways; and, they moved so deep into the woods that no one knew they were out there.

Wow - so much amazing family history! Must have been fascinating to find out about that. Thistles are amazing plants - it’s so interesting to read more about them. Dried thistles are often used in stately homes here to prevent people from sitting on antique chairs, because they are so spiky!

Very interesting and beautifully shown. Only just started watching Outlander. Last time we visited we often found ourselves in places used by the show by chance but although we always visit as many stone circles and the like as possible we missed this one! Maybe because we knew Culloden was very sad! We were more Harry Potter driven lol! Thanks so much.

I got the chills and a bit choked up at Culloden. It was a short brutal battle and so many lives were sacrificed in vain. There really is a huge juxtaposition between the beauty of the field and its sad history. Thank you for sharing this place in such a thoughtful way, Sarah.
The standing stones are so massive. I always wonder how the ancients moved them an inch, let alone built anything with them?

Of all the thistles they decided to bring to Australia, why did they not choose this one instead of the nasty spiky one! 🤣

I usually end with a comment about your painting (chronological order being my thinking), but this time I have to start with it. This is now my favorite painting of yours (after just declaring that last week, I know!). This is without a doubt the best painting, drawing, or even photo of a thistle I've ever seen. I'm in love with it. You mentioned that you wanted it to be more muted than your other paintings and I think that's what I love about it. The muted tones you chose just make it stunning.. It's so beautiful! I haven't been to Scotland yet. I think I've mentioned before that I was planning a trip there prior to the pandemic, but that has yet to happen. However, if I had been there I would have wanted to bring home some sort of "thistle souvenir" for sure. Now I know what I would want it to be. That painting would be perfect printed as a postcard (picture on the front and space to write on the back with the "Stamp" square). I should think every souvenir shop at any of the places you've visited (and helped make popular) would buy them from you. Perhaps some of those adorable coffee houses you've visited that appear to also be shops. If not postcards, then full-size prints. I would buy either one from a gift shop just because it's beautiful. But, knowing that it is from a local artist would add to the appeal. Just a thought... Sorry, I couldn't help myself. 🤭
Of course I enjoyed the walk as well, it was very poignant. You handled it well, your show of respect for what it was, yet appreciating it's current beauty. Thanks for making the note about watching the out-takes to see the other side of your surprised look at Jack being there. That was so cute! Thank you very much for another great video. 😊

Aww thank you so much! This comment means so much to me 😊 I loved this painting - I think it might be my favourite so far too! It’s definitely in the plan to have my prints or maybe cards stocked somewhere here in Scotland. Time will tell! I hope you manage to get your trip to Scotland. It’s such a wonderful place to visit 😊 The bloopers are one of my favourite parts to edit haha! Mostly it’s just Jack being Jack, but it’s too good not to share! Thanks again and see you next week! xx

Really enjoying your channel. But ya know, the fact that there are those who want to develop the area right next to this historic and almost sacrosanct land is a travesty and an underappreciation of history. And out of curiosity, do you ever sell your original artwork? I'd almost give my right arm for that thistle...

    • @shewalksshepaints
