      Watching white people react to this film is so weird because they get all sensitive and borderline offended whenever the "N-word" pops up, or when the more racism-driven comedic elements happen. Black folks in my experience mostly just sit and watch and enjoy a film that's as serious as it is fun, because it's SUPPOSED to be both!

As normal as having an argument at work with a group of coworkers. It’s genius on Tarantino’s part!!

    Leo did cut himself when he first slammed his hand on the table and shattered a glass. They cut filming, stitched him up, and Tarantino wanted to leave that little detail in to add to the intensity and vileness of Leo's character when he smears his "blood" on Kerry's face. He really did cut himself, but they weren't actually going to let him smear blood all over Kerry's face lol
    And the science of phrenology Calvin was talking about as he was showing them Ben's skull is a long out-of-date science. It was popular at the time, but is no longer regarded as viable.

    The thing that makes the scene where he shoots Calvin Candie when he goes for a handshake is so underrated. Just before that scene you see Dr. Shultz having terrible memories he has witnessed dealing with these slave owners. And when Calvin demands him give a handshake, Dr Shutlz can't even pretend to give him respect by shaking his hand. And morally he couldn't help himself but to take out this evil man from the earth. I think a lot of people see that scene and are confused as to why he shot him when he could have shaken his hand and walked away peacefully. It's because to him, Candie didn't deserve any respect. Not even fake, forced respect.

    29:36 Specifically, Alexandre Dumas's paternal grandmother was a slave of Afro-Caribbean descent, bought by a French marquis when he was living in the French colony of Saint-Dominigue (aka Haiti) to be his concubine. The marquis had a son and two daughters with her, when he went back to France he sold her and their daughters to a baron, but took their son Thomas-Alexandre with him to France (after basically pawning him - selling him with the understanding that he could buy him back at any time). Thomas-Alexandre was eventually given his freedom in France and his father arranged for him to be educated like a 'gentleman', but they had a major falling out when Thomas joined the army as a private rather that using his fathers title to get a higher position - apparently the name Dumas comes from his mother and apparently it means that she was farm property. During the French Revolution (which also abolished slavery on the French colonies) Thomas-Alexandre joined France's first all-black legion and was lieutenant to the legions Colonel Joseph Bologne (who was likewise the son of a French nobleman and a house-slave, was likewise legitimised, freed and educated in France, and who was given the title Chevalier de Saint-Georges for his skills as a fencer, violinist, and composer and is unfairly called 'the Black Mozart' even though we know that Mozart actually took inspiration from him (or stole from him, jury's out on it) but ultimately sided with the revolutionaries when the revolution happened - a movie just came out about him, Chevalier, and a play was written about him a few years ago called 'The Chevalier'), and eventually Thomas-Alexandre Dumas became the first man of African descent to rise to the position of General in the French Army. He married a white woman and had 3 daughters and a son with her - Alexandre Dumas. He was imprisoned during Napoleon's rise to fame, his marriage was threatened by Napoleon reintroducing the laws about slavery and interracial marriage after he became emperor of France, and he died without getting the financial compensation for his years in prison or his loyalty to the French army, and after he died Napoleon refused to pay his widow the money generally given to widows of generals, so she had to work and raise her children on her own, and Alexandre Dumas went without a secondary education.
    But to summarise all of this, yes, Alexandre Dumas was black. Though some would call him mixed (the way some insist that he wasn't black makes me wonder if they don't want to think that one of the most popular authors of all time whose books have been adapted into movies since movies were invented could be called black) and others would call him and his father Creole. Either way, as the grandson of a slave, Alexandre Dumas's approval of a slave being torn apart by dogs would be "a dubious proposition at best" - I think one of his villains in one of his books dabbled in the slave trade.
    Really hoping someone makes a movie about General Dumas or a miniseries, his story is basically begging for screen adaptions.

    The song you asked about near the end as Django is preparing himself and riding back towards Candyland for his wife is a John Legend song and it’s called “who did that to you?” It’s actually one of my favorite songs….I listen to it at least once a week to this day. Tbh I think you may be the first person I’ve seen reacting that has actually picked up on how epic John Legend sounds as bad ass Jamie Fox straps up to take care of business. Lol and I’m sure someone has commented this fact by now but when Django yells D’Artagnan at the end as he kicks in the door and takes out that room full of ppl. He was referring to the poor guy ripped up by dogs. And yes that was the same guy Shultz was referring to when he schooled Candy about the author of the 3 musketeers being a black man. Shultz said that he could tell candy was a big fan of the 3 musketeers book bc he named his”slave” after one of the characters “D’Artagnan”.” So Django yelling the name was him announcing that he was killing all of them as revenge for D’Artagnan. Such an awesome call back and just shows the little details that Tarantino pays attention to that makes his movies master pieces.

    Leo cutting his hand was a complete accident, but so gnarly, and professional, Leo stayed in character and they continued the scene...as far as the blood he whipes on her face, I think it was real, but then again, they could have swapped it for fake blood. Not sure Ms. Washington would have appreciated his real blood being smeared all over her face...but who knows...lol

    • @MrKingYuji
      @MrKingYuji ปีที่แล้ว

      The blood smear on the face was fake. That would never have been allowed without major consequences. That’s potentially very dangerous.

    • @Enrique-Garcia
      @Enrique-Garcia ปีที่แล้ว

      They absolutely cut to fake blood when he smeared it on Kerry's face. The face smear wasn't in the script, after they took care of DiCaprio's hand, Tarantino told him to redo the shot with that change (and fake blood).

    • @treiz01
      @treiz01 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nope. Not true. He really cut his hand but they cut, stitched up and bandaged his hand, and the blood on her face was fake. You could never do something like that for real on a movie set because what if she caught some kind of blood borne disease??? The insurance and legal coverage alone would bankrupt the production.

    Your personal story reminded me of a recollection of an obscure African American named Buck Colbert "B.C." Franklin (1879 - 1960). He was very well educated and had moved to Tulsa to work as a lawyer a few months before the Tulsa race massacre. While white people were able to abuse the law to wrest much of the wealth from the blacks of what was known as "Black Wall Street", he worked hard to limit the abuse. His recollection that you reminded me of was how white people would address other white people as "Mr. Smith" and "Mrs. Johnson", but would address black people by their first name as a means of disrespect. In response, black people would name their children actual titles such as "General", "Mister", or... "Major". It could be that your given name follows from that tradition.

    As a note: Candy said that he paid $500 for one of his mandingos, and Django said $12,000 for the right one. In today's money, that's over $500,000 for a single person. No wonder Candy's attention was on them at that point, and why Schultz called it an "outrageous amount of money" - Especially since in those times, some slaves would be sold for $15-25. (What was meant by "you will sell her cheap")

    If it's not on the list yet, a good Tarantino movie is The Hateful 8, not sure of you've done Kill Bill 1 & 3 but also give Four Rooms a chance. It's not just directed by him, but you gotta watch. Also, I would recommend Desperado by Robert Rodriguez.
    Since you like Scarlett Johansson if you haven't yet, watch Lucy. Great movie since you also dig the enlightenment type movies.
    12 Monkeys is great. Has Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt. Surrogate is good too. The whole 9 yards is funny and also has Bruce Willis.

  • @indestarbright9646

    D'Artagnan was the youngest and fourth of the Three Musketeers (Porthos, Athos & Aramis) written by Alexandre Dumas. A few commentators already mentioned Alexandre Dumas, but in association with "The Count of Monte Cristo", but you were talking about D'Artagnan, so I thought I'd mention that he's the newby, musketeer-in-training of "The Three Musketeers". Dumas is considered one of
    France's great fiction authors, however, even now the French still have difficulty reconciling his greatness and his Africaness/blackness. Other Tarantino movies worth watching are both of the Kill Bill movies and "The Hateful Eight."
