A masterpiece....always loved John!
An instant classic when it was first released in 1966; we LOVED it. It's perfect.
Still one of the best tracks ever written. You hear the first few bars and if you are of that age, you are back in the 60's and that voice.... Magic.

Sebastian is an idiotically underrated songwriter.
As a lifelong New Yorker, the song still astonishes me how perfectly it captures a miserable, sweltering, NYC summer's day. We are dressed for work, and we have to be presentable, but we are sweating like pigs. The subways are a nightmare, and tempers flare easily.
But, at night, when we socialize, it all somehow becomes bearable.
I've always located the song much further South, in the sweaty sweltering parts of USA. Plus, I thought Lovin Spoonful were West Coast.
(European here, couldn't even point out Philly or Baltimore on a map. Amsterdam summer nights however, can be every inch as entertaining ;)

John is now 80 and look good for his age.
"Summer In the City" will forever be a classic. It's only flaw is it's too short and should have had a third verse. #1 for three weeks, Aug, 1966.

John Sebastion was one of the great songwriters of his age. Just love his stuff, both with the Lovin Spoonful and as a solo artist.

And yet this song was his brother who at least co-wrote it.
And for over 50 years I thought this masterpiece was about London !! You live and learn. Thank you for posting. Thank you for a great record - timeless.
That song was a lot more sophisticated composition than I ever gave it credit for.
I think that John Sebastian and Ray Manzerek were separated at birth 😂 seriously though I love them both ❤.
Believe it or not, the beginning of this song, with its descending chords, was the inspiration for the music written by Eric Clapton and Cream for the music to "Tales of Brave Ulysses" on their Disraeli Gears album. Clapton was a Lovin'

One of my go-to Summer songs of all time! The Lovin' Spoonful is SO underrated and doesn't get talked enough recently. I do remember hearing this song in a car commercial on TV years ago.

an absolute gem of a song, and yes evokes several emotions... starts off very dark and grimey.. then escalates as it goes... its so good you dont notice not much substance to the lyrics..

No way! Cocker had a real raspy, deep blues type voice! This song is solid but it can't be compared to a great Joe Cocker tune eg. Delta Lady, Feelin' Alright, With a Little Help From My Friends, She Came In Through The Bathroom Window, The Letter, Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, You Are So Beautiful.
Listen to those tracks and you'll get a feel what Joe Cocker was all about.
BTW. My first ever concert was Joe Cocker when I was 14 years old. He was as drunk as a skunk but he sang his arse off.
