Unfortunately they never said HOW we know dark matter exists, and its really not that hard to conceptualize. We measure a galaxy's apparent mass, if the spiral arms/area of observation in the galaxy is moving faster than the apparent mass, there is dark matter there causing more gravitational force, which means more "acceleration". Other than observing how mass gets moved on a large scale like that, we've got nothing. So get to thinking!

Well, they said Dark matter is very hard to find. It was to be xpected that there wouldn't be any results. I'd expect it to take at least 10 years or more until we get any specific results that would let us research Dark Matter propperly.
I would laugh except that all this dark matter goose chasing is wasting tax dollars on useless shit and not on important things like job creation, healthcare and education.

I'd say their explanation for 'why' was also not satisfactory.
They use those 6-foot tall tubes to fill with super-heated C3F8 in order to see if any dark matter particles interact with the fluid and cause bubbles to form.

Ankit Singh while the situation is faaaaaaar more nuanced than that, I'll tell you this, those wars are inefficient, and could very have ended far sooner had some people grown some balls and either invaded entirely or just up and left ;either way would have either ended in peace or complete destabilization of the region, just shortening it to a couple years instead of decades, that is the reason for the endless war, if it ends it gives one side too much of an advantage over the other I'm of course referring to the US vs Russia situation, if Russia wasn't involved, this situation would have been over years ago, and if the US left then this would have ended but the US does need the oil in the region to function or they are going to have to tap into other reserves which at the moment the public will not allow, so the US leaving is kinda not an option, Russia can't really leave because then the US will have so much influence over the planet that their(Russia) very way of life is threatened in the long run, the endless wars have a reason to exist, it is not merely for money, may I also say that the US military has a shit ton of money put into R&D and have developed very impressive stuff that will be very useful commercially in a couple years, the main point I'm making is that those wars exist because they leap to end game for some countries, and at the same time is forcing the military to accelerate their research efforts, meaning that while people are dying atleast technology will be more advanced because of it. It's not a good situation and should end but how can you end it when it almost secures a failure due to further escalation of hostilities.

Ankit Singh NASA's efforts were primarily because of the national security threat it posed if the Soviets could put satellites in orbit and we couldn't. And the geopolitical threat if we were perceived by the rest of the world as behind the Soviets, creating the potential to sway more neutral parties to the Sovirt bloc.
Also most of the companies that built NASA's hardware were part of that industrial complex and would not have the same level of skill, experience, and resources otherwise.
The US military is responsible for a lot of tech its own right too. Most notably, GPS and internet(ARPANET), which both originated for military applications before they were used civilian side. Plus, how much tech could you develop if you have no military and a belligerent nation like say Russia or China could easily boss you around or just steal the tech (or the scientists themselves) by force?

I know a couple of people who work on the PICO experiment. They actually have grad (or undergrad) students to help disassemble and reassemble the machines along with Brenda. Also my neighbor in the apartment below me is one of the scientists researching the effects of bacteria in the absence of radiation. A lot of people in Sudbury work at SNOLAB. Hell, I even applied to become their communications director.

Just because they had no results doesn't mean you can't learn something from it. I'm now aware of these people's fantastic efforts, and will seek more information about them, especially when they discover something remarkable.
lol so you want these scientist to be working in tiny cozy compact rooms? They built snolab that big so it can accommodate more, and larger experiments down the road; making it bigger isn't exactly as easy as throwing up a new wall.
They're not bribing the government for money, they get grant's because the government recognizes the need for research and rewards people who put forth the effort.
Snolab is a laboratory for any researcher who needs a super isolated test environment. that is all sno lab is. The awesomeness that goes on in there is up to the people who rent out the space and put up the experiment.

Im a local as well and know what your saying, but remember Motherboard is international and even Toronto is a medium city on the grand scale. Any publicity for the North is good publicity at this point, seeing how our southern half has forgotten about us or assume we are all hillbilly trappers.
I thought this had something to do with CERN at first, but very interesting either way!
It irritates me when reporters say "We can't observe dark matter". We _can_ observe dark matter -- it interacts via the gravitational force! That's how we know it exists in the first place! We look at galaxies and we see them spinning fast enough that they would fly apart if the visible matter were the only matter present, so we know dark matter is there, and we can even make rough calculations of the distribution of dark matter based on its gravitational lensing of distant light sources like pulsars. The problem is we haven't built telescopes that can measure gravitational forces in high detail yet, so we can't generate images of dark-matter clouds in the nice 3D visual format that we humans prefer to look at. LIGO is the closest we've gotten, and it can only measure two data points and we can't focus it on a distant star like we can with optical or radio telescopes. But yes, we _can_ observe dark matter, even if our observations are very, very fuzzy at this point. Honestly, a telescope capable of making highly-detailed measurements of gravitational forces would probably be the size of the entire solar system, so it will be a very long time before we can scatter enough gravity-sensing satellites around the solar system to make those observations, but it will happen someday.
This is a semantic point. You ever consider that perhaps in this context observe means to see visually or with an analog comparable to sight. Why does it even matter? The observation of the effect does not demonstrate that it is "dark-matter" only that the effect is present. See a ripple on the surface of a pond is not the same as observing the fish underneath. The wind could have just as easily caused it. Dark matter is only a hypothesis that seeks to explain the effect. It could be that aliens are actually holding galaxies together. It could be our calculations of the mass of the supermassive black holes in the center of galaxies are actually way off. I personally imagine it might be something like spacetime having features akin to gravitational hills and valleys. Anyways~ Don't be so uptight.

The presence of these gravitational phenomena is evidence of the phenomena. Not the hypothesis that attempts to explain them. Rather than the observation being evidence of the explanation.

Given the video context. The term observe was used correctly. It doesn't matter that you have a different more rigid definition. You clearly understood what they meant.

Most of those viewers will take the video's content as reasonably factual and authoritative because it is presented as such. That's why it's important to get things right when discussing them in casual media, because otherwise millions of people will misunderstand the things being discussed. In particular, the reason I'm irritated about _this_ misconception is because I've encountered plenty of people who think dark matter is purely hypothetical because it's "never been observed". So to re-iterate: When someone says we can't observe dark matter, they are wrong -- we _can_ observe dark matter, we just can't _see_ it via reflected light the way we're used to seeing things. But dark matter, or something which is mathematically identical to dark matter, is absolutely real and observable even if we don't know everything about it.

The contaminants they worry about are rock particles, containing trace amounts of uranium and thorium, which would cause false positives in detectors when gamma rays from their radioactive decays knock out electrons.

I second this. She didn't cover the subject well. All I found out from this video was that there is a dark matter research facility in Ontario which is underground and apparently the cleaning lady has the most important job there because you need decades of experience to wipe dirt.

the Sudan underground mine in Minnesota was trying to do the same thing but it wasn’t very up to date anymore (and wasn’t as deep as other mines, making it less effective)

We're being given a carbon tax right now but none of that money is being used to develop infrastructure to make way for electric cars. What are we doing with that money right now? Why are we funding things like this when we could be funding research that could prove more useful to us?
@@stockloc Skimtar electric cars are good for short range but currently normal cars are better until we can power the batteries in like a hour or 2 and go for like 1k km they aren't too good but yeah i sorta agree even tho i am a american Also finding out about the universe is useful you just don't understand

@Donald Kasper Dark matter could provide energy that can be used to further cancer research. We don't know yet what applications we can find, the possibilities are endless.
There is a similar experiment deep in the Homesteak Mine in Lead, South Dakota. The surface is at 6500 ft elevation and the lowest faces are about 2,000 ft below sea level. IIRC the Experiment is about 7,000 feet underground.

The staff mentioned that working there was very fatiguing, and they thought the cause might be the thick air. But I wonder if anyone has checked for the Positive/Negative Ion balance in the air, or even no ions. Natural air, particularly in rural areas, and particularly after thunderstorms, contains lots of Negative Ions, which promote alertness and energy. Machinery and office equipment could give off Positive Ions or deplete the air of any kind of ion. So indoor air often has too many Positive Ions, or even no ions at all. I suggest that the Snolab folks find an expert in this who can do an Air Ion analysis on SnoLab's air.
Pretty far fetched to say we only don't know a quarter of the universe. In actuality our understanding of the universe in contrast with knowledge to be gained we have amassed less than a point of a percent of information about the multiverse

My father works at pretty deep in that same mine not as deep, maybe about 1000 ft. Above there at the 6200-6400ft level but only for a couple more months then retiring. You will never catch me underground. Quite the opposite actually. I've worked on swing stages 28 stories above Yonge st. Downtown Toronto doing balcony restoration and pressure washing. The higher the better ;p
