  • Unbox, Assembly, and Review of Mockins, Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier. In this video, I unbox the new Mocking Cargo Carrier I got to use on the 2 inch Curt hitch I installed in my 2015 Volvo S60. We'll assemble it together and you can see the entire process start to finish (with some parts sped up several times). After assembly, we'll install it and see what our initial thoughts are. Overall, I really like this carrier. There are some things that could be better. The pin that latches it in place for it's horizontal or vertical positioning fits in holes that aren't machined to the best precision they could be. It's a pretty tight fit and may require the use of something to tap it in or out. A tight fit is better to prevent wobble, and with plenty of use, I bet that it will loosen up a little. I love the color also. The storage bag that comes with it is very, very heavy duty. It's totally rubberized and I have no doubt that it would probably keep items inside dry thru several hurricanes. For $180, I think it's a pretty good deal and I give it about a 4 1/2 star rating. If I were to need one to use a lot more often, I would probably have spent another $100 or so and gotten a heavier duty unit from a more reputable brand, but I think this will do what I need it to do.

    Like others I got this package with no instructions. If you’re handy enough you can figure it out but the u-bolt “stabilizer” had me stumped. Great video and I agree…great package for a great price!

      @FloydNashFixItDad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm still not entirely sure I used the stabilizer the way it was intended, but the way I used it worked, so I'm happy.

    • @mikereddy1019
      @mikereddy1019 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      All that matters really. I saw someone use smaller ratchet straps from the back of the cargo to the hitch. I might do that. I’m off pavement A LOT so the extra security will keep me happy.

      @@mikereddy1019 If you're going to have a lot of weight on it, that's good insurance. I don't think it would be actually needed except maybe for the side to side rocking movement. I can see where, with a lot of weight, over time, that might crack the welds or something so bracing those would keep the whole thing working well for years.

    Hi Floyd, I noticed you didn’t install the anti rattle U Bolt attachment. Is this part not necessary?

    • @FloydNashFixItDad
      @FloydNashFixItDad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it's absolutely necessary, but it's a good idea. When I actually used it, I installed that part. It really helps keep it stable so it doesn't bounce around quite as much, so that's a bonus too.

      @@FloydNashFixItDad I checked and the pic still not clear, what im not sure is how the washers should go with the 4 screws, theres like 4 screws in each then each comes with two washers, one flat and bigger the other smaller...

    • @FloydNashFixItDad
      @FloydNashFixItDad  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dnm6445 Just lay it out and it should be fairly obvious, I believe you're talking about the 4 bolts that connect the arm and 2 halves together in what will be the underside of the carrier. Usually, you put a washer on the bolt, put the bolt thru the holes, put another washer on, and then the nut to tighten it all together.. As you lay it out, if it looks like the larger washer should be on one side or the other, then do it. If it looks like it makes no difference, then it probably doesn't. I think I replaced a couple of the smaller washers on mine with larger ones I already had just because I like a larger washer to apply a force over a larger area. Unless you're planning on loading it to maximum capacity all the time, it probably won't matter at all.

      Actually, that's a great idea! I just put that on my To Do list for videos. I have a 2004 Toyota Matrix I got for my youngest daughter and used the more aggressive kit on the headlights on that car. They were much, much worse than the Volvo and they look fantastic now.

    I just put mine together but have not tested it on the road trip yet. I will be using it pretty much one time for my trip from NC to Cabo San Lucas Mexico where I am moving permanently next year. Have you used it on your vacation yet? If so, how did it work out?

    • @FloydNashFixItDad
      @FloydNashFixItDad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I also posted a review video of that trip so check it out. If you're in a car, it does sit low so you'll drag going in or out of hotels or parking lots that have elevated entries or exits. Going in or out on an angle does help. If you have an SUV or truck, you should have zero issues. It handled everything beautifully and never flinched a bit with all the super bouncy roads going thru the western states. I couldn't be happier with it.
      You'll have to let us know what it's like when you move. I've heard most anywhere on the Baja peninsula is a great retirement choice, and had even thought myself of some place like La Paz near Cabo. My only problem is I like metal detecting and finding history, and that's not the best area for that. I hear you can really stretch a retirement dollar though. Maybe I can just turn into a beach you tuber! Daily routine... wake up to the sound of the ocean, walk along the beach, consume copious amounts of seafood, sleep, repeat.

    I would be concerned about stuff melting from your exhaust.

    • @FloydNashFixItDad
      @FloydNashFixItDad  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The exhaust in this car isn't hot enough or close enough to the hitch carrier to cause issues. I couldn't detect any temperature difference of any kind anywhere near the exhaust. There may be vehicles out there you have to worry about that, but this isn't one of them.

      @FloydNashFixItDad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually, for this carrier, that may not be true. It's pretty dang good. I did just happen to see a Curt version at my local walmart the other day, and it's absolutely identical to this particular one I got. I don't mean close, I mean identical. Same everything. For the same price as the curt, I got the one I have, with carrier bag and tie down straps, plus hitch stabilizer. I don't need to use it every day. Except for the vacation I'm going on this summer, I probably won't need it more than a couple of times a year.

      Best to compare is the weight and the texture of the powder coat.
      The funny texture represents cheap.

      @@wt9653 Awesome, don't buy it then. Like I said, I may only need it a couple of times a year and a can of Krylon is 5 bucks. It will do great for what I need. In the video, at the end, if you paid attention, I clearly state that if you are going to be needing one for more than occasional use, get a better quality one.
