  • I'm specifically using the song Call Out My Name in this video, but the techniques can be applied to a lot of The Weeknd's songs. If you would like to learn how to use these techniques in detail check out my online course singingfromscratch.thinkific..... Like, share and subscribe. And if you would like me to break down some other singers voices for you let me know in the comments. singingfromscratch.thinkific....

    I cant thank you enough for this technical singing demonstration, not many people cover the weeknd. From personal practice I find mouthing the words like a baby also helps to sound like the weeknd. He has a very innocent way of pronouncing his vowels(could be his natural accent) if you added R&b runs to your demonstration it would be 10/10 thank you

    Can this method damage the vocal chords? My vocal coach said it MIGHT depending on how well I utilize my diaphragm; but what’s your take?

    • @singingfromscratch_official
      @singingfromscratch_official  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Cameron, Good question. 'Damage' is a pretty broad term. Permanent damage to vocal cords is actually hard to do with singing/speaking/yelling alone. Think of the most hoarse you have ever been from yelling at a concert or something of the sort. Yet you recovered fully within a day or two. The utilization of the diaphragm determines how long you can sing before you start to get hoarse. So if you utilize your diaphragm more, you will be able to practice this method more before you get hoarse. But damage them? No.

      If you mean wavering in pithch that means you are not using enough air support. Taken in a bit more air, and tighten your bellies and diaphragm. You can sing softly with support.

      Thanks! Yah know, if you drop the key of the song into your range, then you can hit the high notes. Not that it's a perfect analogy, but the cover of Kiss by Tom Jones and Art Of Noise does fit here. Tom obviously can't sing as high as Prince, but by dropping the key he was able to sing it in his range.

    One thing people need to realize is most people don’t have an ultra light and agile voice like Abel. So unless you have a really similar nasal, oral, and nasopharyngeal cavity, you’re not going to sound remotely close to his tonal qualities. Yes you can sing how he sings in terms of register and technique, but for most people that’s not going to change the structural tonal qualities of your voice. I know that’s depressing for some people because I too tried to get my voice to sound as close as possible to The Weeknd’s but after years of manipulating my voice in countless of ways, it simply isn’t ever going to sound close to his. My voice is light like Abels but it’s not agile. Instead it’s sharp and piercing at the same time due to my tonal qualities. There’s ways I can dampen it and make it smoother and seemingly more agile, but it’s still much heavier and sharper than Abel’s. His tonal qualities are light and feathery by nature and he doesn’t have to try to sound like that. All in all, I can sing the way The Weeknd does, but it’s in my own tonal characteristics and there’s nothing I can do to change that.

    I don’t think this can be taught. No shade on the teacher, he’s trying his best, it’s just that it’s a very specific kind of vocal range. The reason I say this is because I tend to have a similar natural vocal range, and there are many songs that I can’t sing because of this. I would label it a light tenor vocal range, which spans over 3 octaves. I think the singer has to have a natural high voice like The Weeknd or myself in their regular life to be able to hit those notes

      Without actually hearing your voice, there is no way to specifically tell you what to do fix it. Also, keep in mind that voices are like fingerprints, every single one unique. Therefore there is no possible way to sound EXACTLY like him. However, given the physical approximation, you can sound LIKE him to a degree. But that is not the point. The point is to sound AS GOOD AS him, not like him. That should be your goal.
