    This episode is a perfect depiction of the sexism and degradation of women in the early 2000’s which I feel like no one talks about but I was born in 1994 and I remember the kinds of horrible things said about women during this era. It made it really difficult for me as a young girl to really love myself and my body. I’m glad things are even just slightly better now.

    They pulled an entire eating disorder storyline for Elyse that several of the other contestants got involved in, very uncomfortable to watch, especially for someone like me who's had issues with an ED himself in the past. Also kind of hypocritical to feign concern for her health in the same elimination where Robyn is labelled plus size. Granted, it was a different time, but still, big yikes.
    Sidenote, Ebony was done dirty too throughout the season, Robyn had it in for her because she's a lesbian so production jumped on that to make her the stereotypical angry black woman.

      Totally agree, and also, a side note: I don't think it was a different time back then in the sense that saying this stuff was okay. I was watching this as it came out, and I remember there being an episode of E! News (the drama and commentary channel in the era of cable TV) where a woman absolutely BLASTED Tyra for this specific episode. It was a big deal at the time, back in 2003.
      This is a total theory of mine, but: I don't think there was much of a difference between now and then in terms of what was 'okay' and what wasn't. I kinda think that the only thing that's changed is our increased ability to talk to each other about messed up things, now that social media has connected us. Because now, regular people have more power than ever to express their complaints and have them seen/validated by millions of other people.
      Maybe I'm romanticizing the internet too much, but I think the major difference between then and now is only that we couldn't connect with each other as much as before.

      @Itri_Vega 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@honestlynotsponsored I should highlight that I am from Germany so mentalities might have been different between the US and here, but at least in my immediate environment EDs were often treated as illnesses stemming from vanity. If you had them you were obsessed with beauty and weight rather than today's theory which assumes that people mostly develop them out of a need for control, and that there are also restrictive EDs that manifest as an obsession with healthy food rather than no food or purging and thus go unnoticed for a long time until the person visibly avoids food groups. The sensitivity around the issue isn't quite where it should be - some people who know I've had one still constantly talk about how they are too fat and need to reduce their food intake around me. I'm not just talking harmless holiday banter about having gained weight, but full on beach body obsession.

    The whole "pictures are shot just a season ahead" is bs, there is no problem to shoot 1-2 years before the line drops, and if they want an urban backdrop, they could have done this in the summer. Or just do it in a budget studio, since the final images sure look like it.

    Shows like this were a big part of why my eating disorder developed when I was younger. I've always been fat, and never saw anyone considered "beautiful" who were around my size. All the models, the "beautiful" women, were always skinny, and to me, that meant being fat was automatically ugly. It was so damaging and hurtful. I always find it so astonishing how different the top model shows are in America and Germany. In Germany we have Heidi Klum, who is incredibly sweet and open, supports and helps every model, and tries to get the best out of everyone. There was definitely a concept back then of just having that "it" factor. People were supposed to be naturally good/fitting for the thing they were trying to achieve and then hone their skills from there. You rarely thought it was really ok to start from 0 talent/skills. And we were all conditioned to be so competitive, we really leaned into that. If you were at least a little bit naturally good at the thing you were trying to do people would just call you out and say you weren't fit for it.

If you criticise a little girl about her look she most likely will be stiff and shy during a photoshoot when grows up VS when you constantly praise someone, this person will grow up having confidence.

I love when you pause the video and just go off on Ms Jay and Tyra! lol! you made me look at the series in a whole new light, especially since you're a photographer. It never dawned on me it wasn't just model's responsibility--it was EVERYONE on the set responsibility to ensure the photo comes out great. ANTM came out when I was in the 9th grade, I haven't watched it since maybe season 8/9 and it's so crazy how "normal" the red flags seemed back then! and I LOVE WHEN YOU CALL/ EXPOSE EACH ONE. Keep doing your thing, sis!💜

    they didn't even have to bring them to a warmer place, they could have just done it INSIDE with a background

    Can I just say, thank you to the algorithm for bringing me your channel. I've been binging you for the last 3 days. I didn't know how much I needed someone to say out loud how I felt about this show. I know this is stupid but it's healing in away to know I haven't been crazy all these years thinking this was a dumpster fire of a show. There's just this mean spirited undercurrent to the whole show that I could never get anyone else to see...and you do it in such an entertaining way...you're doing the lords work honey...drag them!

    "Fun" thing they did in Cycle 1 was send a personal trainer in to give all the girls a public weigh-in and BMI or something like that. Like it could have been a decent moment, teaching them about exercise that will help them model (increased flexibility and core strength for dynamic poses, perhaps) but nope, it was just another opportunity to humiliate them on television. iirc, it didn't even go anywhere because it's not like they had regular fitness checks with this trainer guy.

      @@justine4652 Did they? I genuinely don't remember, it's been years since I actually saw s1. Only remember the first "weigh in" because of another youtuber (lucretia? I think that's her name?) reacting to s1e1. Either way, it wasn't (to my memory) treated as a "fitness can help with modeling" so much as "let's publicly humiliate these young adults about their bodies".

      John, the fitness instructor, was featured inat least 3 episodes, prior to going to Paris. One was the weigh-in (something they did for they next couple of cycle); one involved had drama with Robyn while praising Adrienne; one commending Adrienne and praising Elyse (the episode that highlight Elyse alleged eating disorder)
      After more thought, I think the real reason why they had John and the fitness segments was to better assess if one of the girls did have an eating disorder. If this sounds, you can spot that ANTM has very odd, roundabout way to showcase a few things, from time to time.

      I saw something similar on a different modeling competition show. They brought a doctor in to give all the contestants physicals and they were told they were at a healthy weight by the doctor but the judges were always telling them that they weren't thin enough to be models thereby basically saying that being a model is not healthy.
