The first time i ever experienced the majestic-ness of Fry's, my uncle took me to this location. It was the coolest store ever. I'm sad it went under. A big part of my inner nerd died with that store. There doesn't seem to be any Micro Centers in Austin, maybe they could go there. There is only one Microcenter in DFW and its kind of in a rundown location.
This shopping center will close soon as soon as these leases are up. Especially since Opals is gone. Developers are chomping at the bit for land to build apartments and office space.
I remember when this store opened up. It was my first big job after high school. Was there for two years, then moved on. I hate what has happened to it, but thats how it is. The stories, oh! The stories. The memories. I still have the key to the manaboar(their forklift).
Every day for lunch, I'd walk straight down to Opal Divines - a Fish/Burger resteraunt that was directly down the parking lot. Every day, same time. They could see me coming up the walk-way and would have my usual meal there in my usual spot; A plain, medium rare hamburger with their signature fries and a glass of coke. Opals is gone too, at least that one is. The barkeeper told me, on my last day at Fry's, that once I hit 21, my first beer was on him. I never did go back to collect that.
I owe my love a video games partially to this Fry’s. Before steam, this is where i got all my big box PC games. I just got whatever seemed cool! Also where i got my GameCube, Wii, and WiiU
I remember going here all the time when I was around 10. Once my dad went by himself and was looking at vacuums, and he picked one up and a DS game (Monsters vs. Aliens) fell out of it. Just the cartridge and it was dusty so we cleaned it up a bit. I got a free DS game that day.
I remember as I got older and started to get interested in electronics going to fry’s was always a treat. One of the few places that sells computer parts. Was nice to have someone there that you could ask questions to if needed.
I remember one day on Black Friday my dad was buying some things in line and me and my sister were playing a Pokémon battle game on the demo switch with some other dudes
This place was amazing to me when iw as little, i learned to build my first computer in 10 mins here in my early 20's im almost 32 now and id make the drive for parts etc today to Frys over ordering online still if i could.
And seriously? Why did Sunday get its own line of the same 7 day a week friggin' "temporary" store hours? That was weird. I live 2 miles away from the UFO Burbank location and that place was fenced-up in less than a week after closing.
it really is sad. i got most of my PC parts for my first PC build from this exact frys. I'm still using the case I saw from that frys (Zalman Z Neo). But, the writing was on the wall. I mean, I remember going in a couple months before they closed, and MY GOD was it a ghost town. at least in terms of product. I'm talking NOTHING. like it was crazy. Plus they were just going down hill. Hate to see it but. Nothing u can do 🤷♂. Still sad to see it. I drive past the building and a bit of my soul dies everytime. I would've loved to work there. Now all we got is bum ahh altex. I hope micro center will think about opening a location down here tho, I mean, austins becoming a sortof new 'silicon vally' so I don't see why not. But idk I don't run a company so. Also, can we talk abt how frys went bankrupt before NOPE (a movie they, presumably, had paid for product placement) came out. It honestly makes it way sadder.

Never realized that was a piano around the doorway. Makes sense though since there was a guy that actually played the piano inside in the mid 2000's.

At least the Half-Price Books is still there on the corner.
@@madcat789 And before that it was Sea Island. But that was a long, long time ago. 20+ years or so.
I think a church should be built there or a rec center.
Online shopping is convenient and all but it's really sad what it has done to Malls & Retail Stores

Cool video, thanks for the background info.

I went here around late 2012, went with my dad. I vividly remember playing the forza horizon 1 demo here
I miss Fry’s man. I used to go to that one… 😢
Its sad this business was not good to their employees, customers and vendors. This store needed to go!
I bought all the parts for the first PC I ever built from this Fry's. RIP...
That was one thing we like about Fry’s. Cheap videos. I can’t get my giant 12 plug power strips now. And some batteries.
The Opal Divines is now a really good restaurant called Garbo's. Very good seafood.
thats the one i went to all the time makes me sad to see it gone :/ lotta good memories

Own owns this building? Will it be reused for a different store?
I USED TO WORK THERE BACK IN 2001
I'm sorry friend. My dad worked there too. It sucked to work there from what I hear.
Damn rip

Can we get an address

Yeah you probably paid 10 times the retail. I looked at graphics cards @ Fry's but they were double in price so I went to best buy.
this is very sad
only reason to go there is for hobby town
Big Corporate companies suck! No tears for this boring shit.
This place price gouged, paid their employees less than minimum wage, and didn't pay their suppliers. It's a good riddance.
