    What's interesting about Urabrask is that he embodies how red is sometimes a morally superior colour to white. Ironically, red's unpredictability and opposition to any sort of restriction makes it more consistent and stubborn in its views, which is what prevents it from being utterly corrupted and subdued, like white was in the Machine Orthodoxy. A lot of people think that white and red are both linked to empathy, but I would said that white is not empathetic at all. White does what is right (most of the time) because it KNOWS what is right. It doesn't relate to those it's helping; it protects the weak because it's the right thing to do. That is not empathy, and it also explains why white's morals can be twisted and subverted in a way red cannot. White relies on what it thinks it right. Thus, it can be mistaken and lied to, essentially. Red does not do the right thing for the sake of doing good; it does it because it feels what others are feeling. Because of this, it is much more difficult to subdue red - especially in the example of New Phyrexia - because it is easier to change what people think than what people feel. Maybe I should go outside.

      Both are capable of being some of the forces of the greatest good and the most terrible evil. White-aligned and red aligned characters are often driven by morality and their own sense of right and wrong rather than simply self-interest, but in excess can result in truly oppressive forces in complete opposite ways. White, more than other colors, seeks out maintaining order and destroying what its characters view as threats to the world, however, in excess this can lead to committing atrocities out of paranoia of threats, as well as developing an unfeeling coldness towards said threats. Red on the other hand, actively seeks out spreading chaos, destroying principles of order and law that are necessary to have a proper society, and its characters can go around spreading havoc against innocents, seeing similarly no remorse or care for others outside their beliefs. I think white's general adherence to concepts of truth, justice, and order, while still having the same sort of defiance red has, except a more focused defiance towards what it perceives as evil rather than just a blind one towards law, so even if how white characters act is unjust, they at least follow what they perceive as right rather just what they feel like.emotionally. I definitely understand what your getting at in terms of red's admirable traits though, and it really shows how concepts of good and evil vary throughout the color pie.

    • @francopensalfine7494
      @francopensalfine7494 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      So, in summary, white always does what it thinks it's right, at least from it's point of view. And red, being relationated with strong emotions it's capable of feel empathy?

    • @naphackDT
      @naphackDT 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      The Line between good and evil runs right through the middle of every human heart...
      And right through the middle of every single color of mana. There is a tyrannical element to every set of colors.
      White is defined by order and the rule of law. Order and the rule of law usually exist for the greater good, but if that perceived good is far greater than the lives of ordinary citizens, you will require repression to force your order upon those who would reject it.
      Red is defined by individuality and emotionality, but just as emotional behavior can foster empathy, impulsivity can also make you blind to the problems of others.
      Green is probably the least well defined color of magic, at least on a conceptual level, but the basic idea is that it represents nature and there is untold suffering inherent to the natural state of, well, everything, so this one is easy as well.
      Black is selfishness, and while anarcho-capitalists might disagree vehemently, there is an inherent problem with people only pursuing what's in their own best interest.
      Blue... Well, once you are more than three standard deviations more intelligent than the average citizen, it becomes hard to even view them as a person.

    • @bluedog4248
      @bluedog4248 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      naphackDT I kind of disagree with Green. Green seems to be the color of the natural path or natural way of everything. Most of the removel for green is about returning to nature, or becoming part of nature. The color would represent growth and nit meddeling.

I don't mind the way anybody pronounces words created by WotC, but normal English words are a different matter. Maybe it's not your native language (which is cool, not trying to hate); I don't want to seem like an elitist jerk, but just being a minor TH-cam celeb and providing a service for the MTG community, ya know... just some friendly criticism. And again, thanks for all the videos, I do really enjoy watching all these to complement the cards I play with.

    I have always loved the art on this card, how the white and red mixes is just plain (*ba dum tss*) stunning. To learn that Elesh Norn has some awesome lore to follow along just makes the card so much more awesome than it really is.

    Urabrask might've been made by, or even is, Slobad. He lost his spark to save Gissa so he's definitely corruptible, and he seems somewhat kind to the Mirrans. It's quite possible that he embraces the rage, but also the freedom of red mana. While he definitely seems to be Phyrexian, he doesn't seem to want suffering or extinction on the Mirrans, though obviously it's not as if he'd want them to outnumber him.

    As you could probably tell by my profile picture, I love New Phyrexia. It was my firsts, first set to know, first set to get the lore of, first set to gape in awe at. I am surprised that there was never a strong alliance between Jin-Gitaxias and Elesh Norn; they have the closest ideals, and could work very well together.

    I knew about Karn but I never knew anything about the Praetors or Phyrexia. It sounds like their existence and presence in life is so twisted. I feel like I have a new respect for their cards. Knowing what they are all about realm changes the gameplay for me, I like making decks that stay true to the stories (like not having a deck with Eldrazi and inhabitants if Zendikar in it) I really want to go through what little cards I have from that set with this background in mind.

  • @SongOfDeer

    Urabrask isn't so much "pissed off" at the other phyrexians as he is conflicted. While most people see red as the colour of rage and anger, it actually is the colour of emotion and individualism. Something that is basically forgein to phyrexians. He allows the Mirrans to take refuge and commands his forces to ignore them because despite being a vicious killing machine, his red allignment makes him feel empathy, which drives him mad and causes his mood swings.
    Urabrask does JUST enough for New Phyrexia to not make the other factions suspicious about him (Except Jin-Gitaxias of course, who is paranoid about his antics.)
    You can see his detatchment in many of the cards and artwork - the picture of the "Grand Compilation" shows the red mana orb floating at a much greater distance to the rest and the creature Atraxa (Basically a phyrexianised Platinum Angel) lacks the red mana allignment because Urabrask outright refused to help creating the ultimate enforcer of Phyrexian rule.

    Braids, Cabal Minion. I would like to hear her backstory due to her being the Original Black female Planeswalker prior to the Mending. Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite was and still is one of the Creatures I would choose to reanimate in a Sultai Canadian Highlander deck.

    The blue and white factions seems the most dedicated towards the phyrexian goal, which is strange considering that this combination of colors usually is the most un-evil of them.

    • @Bladezeromus
      @Bladezeromus 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, think about it. They were black aligned in game before, but back then they answered to a Yawgmoth (and if I remember the books right, yawgmoth didn't even know about colored manager until way after the thran died off and he started phyrexia). Thus they were united in a goal and all of they power was going towards it.
      With no singular leadership and colored mana, their perspectives have been skewered. White and Blue are the most meticulous, goal oriented, and organized colors. They are also the two colors that resist control and rules the least and are most likely to sacrifice freedom for progress.
