    This was perfect, was looking for a sheltered spot in the west to take my daughter. We ended up fishing for 2 hours and caught 4 bream under the bridge (was a sunny day today so I thought they may be hiding there) I set up my rig as suggested in this video and bought some scrub worms for bait. Would perhaps use a little more weight to get them out against the wind but other than that all went well.

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Mark, that is great to hear that my video helped you catch a few local bream with your daughter. I try to use as little weights as possible when bream fishing trying to keep the bait close to structure and moving freely. Thanks for the feedback.

  • @NinjaDucky69
    @NinjaDucky69 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Awesome video mate, what would you recommend the drag to be set on and do they often get hooked by themselves or is there a technique to hooking up ?

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I like to leave the drag reasonably loose. This way bream can run with the bait and most times they will hook themselves. Basically so you can peel line of the reel only with a little bit of resistance. I think people miss hookups trying to strike a little too quickly. I hope this helps, thanks for the positive comments.

    Hi Alan love this type of video showing the rigging up. Question: what are the best months to fish for Bream?

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Thomas, thanks for your comments. I find that bream are a species that you can catch all year round. I find in the warmer months they tend to sit in the shallows or along the edges and in winter they go more into the middle and deeper water. If your bait fishing using some berley is a good way of bringing them in. I posted a video last night on how to use berley effectively for this exact reason you can see that here th-cam.com/video/SLijf7y5Fx8/w-d-xo.html . Another good tip is that many people cast out far when in fact bream are often hiding under the pier or jetty that your fishing from. I think knowing stuff like that allows you to target them all year with success. In a couple of months they will start spawning and thats when the big ones seem to be very active. I hope that all helps.

    cool. I do drop shot though for all my fishing.. its my favorite.. I like weightless the best.. but hard to cast a weightless nightcrawler very far.. also if you just bait and wait.. try some owner mosquito circle hooks.. you don't have to set the hooks they automatically hook the fish in corner of mouth. we don't have brim here we have bluegills and redears that are decent sized.. and green sunfish but ive only found them really small. I fish a pressured lake here. and I notice nightcrawlers don't catch a lot of fish unless you are throwing them on bluegills. ive got some here and there but I catch a ton more with plastic worms working them in very slowly on bottom.

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your detailed comments. yeah weightless fishing is also a very effective technique. I will be releasing some vids in the coming weeks on suing different types of baits and fishing some of those weightless such as prawns, yabbies, bread and others. This work particularly well next to structure. Nighcrawlers are also a great bait, a lot of our native fish species like them very much. Just curious what area are your fishing at ?

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Luke, The video was recorded between 9am and 10am. I find that Canning is all about the tides. The incoming tide towards the peak the tend to fire up then it goes quiet again. I have had some very productive sessions there and some quiet sessions too. 2 years ago I ran some fishing clinics there between 9am and 11am. On the Sat we caught 20+ bream over 30cm, the following day not a touch. SO it can be a little hit and miss. Hopefully these tips might help you.

    • @fishingmad

      for bream running works a lot better, bream are very finicky. Other species like pinkies and flathead fixed is fine. I always go smallest sinker possible

  • @Ayeskkies
    @Ayeskkies 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’ve been using the wrong setup , I’ve been using 30lb line , with 20lb trace , also sometimes my sinker is heavier due to strong currents , is that okay

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Andy, if your targeting bream with heavy gear then your chances of catching are very low. 30 pound line and 30 pound trace is more suited for big species such as king fish or gummy sharks. For bream small sinker and light line will help you catch a lot more fish. Hope this video has given you some good tips.

    Tell me, Allan - Is the bream from the Nong edible, or safe to eat? I understand fish from the Yarra are best returned to the water. Is that the same for the Nong?

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Alvy, it really comes down to personal preference. The fish in the Nong are very healthy, I have some mates who catch bream from the nong and eat the regularly and haven't had any issues and I have other mates who swear they wouldn't wat them because they are resident fish and there is lots of spillways and pollutants in the Nong. Its a topic that everyone has a different opinion on. Personally I don't eat bream from the nong, but that's only because I do a lot of catch and release.

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Brodie, I find this does happen at times. You'll have one day that you catch 10 legal size bream and hardly and undersize and the next day youll catch countless undersize ones. Unfortunetly you just have to keep working through the small ones until you find the bigger models. Sometimes that may mean switching baits or using even bigger baits. Eg I had this issue a little while ago and switched from worms to live yabbies because of the small ones and bang got a few good sizes ones. Or even flicking some lures like this th-cam.com/video/KwWxNNgCSyk/w-d-xo.html for the most part worms are generally very effective, just need to work through some of the smaller ones.
