    Having spent the fall in the Arganil area and shopping regularly at Lidl and Intermarche we loved this video. As Canadians we initially had problems figuring out the milk thing. All of our milk is in grocery refrigerators over here so we had no idea where to find it. We really did like how much Portuguese products are stocked, cheese, wine, fish. As seafood lovers the variety available was amazing and we're feeling quite disadvantaged now that we're back home.

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much. The range of food and the quality is really excellent. We think the value is really good as well. How does it compare to Canada out of interest? I do like seafood but am quite unimaginative when it comes to preparing it for ourselves. Such a shame as the markets and supermarkets here seem to be stocked with do much great choice. 👍 ~ Lee

      @@FrugalTravellers Portuguese wine here is ~ 2.5 times the price for similar bottles. Veg is cheaper in Portugal but not to the same degree. Portuguese Pork and chicken is cheaper, but beef is either unavailable or super expensive. They seem to be more into veal which is not a common thing here. Seafood way more expensive here. For example Octopus 800grms was €3.59 at Lidl. Here 400grms is €17.50.

    Love Lidl here in France, but you win for prices there in Portugal!! Fruits and veggies definitely cheaper there...And wine too! Hello Tamara! It's always wonderful to get these amazing bargains, and also to try some of the weird and wonderful local food in Portugal... we haven't been brave enough to try tomato jam yet 😁😃
      How much would it cost for the cheapest bottle of red wine at Lidl in France? Here in Portugal the cheapest red we've seen was €1.39... and Lee said it was all right, not amazing but drinkable 😁😃
      It's great to compare prices and bargains with fellow frugal shoppers!

      @@FrugalTravellers Well, the prices vary widely and I don't often buy wine at Lidil...So, I am not a snob and actually quite frugal!! I buy most of my wine at a local winery and I can buy an ok to good bottle of red for 2 euros, but a great one for what it is is a steal at 5 euros! It's the same for food...I love Lidil for most things, but go to a local butcher for most meat and the quality is superior and actually less expensive believe it or not because that is not common in France but I do my research!! I do not waste time or money in big stores and have just reined it to tried and true establishments! In and out is how I like it!! Love your vlogs!! #frugallikeyou

We go to Lagoa mostly to Inter Marche and to Lidal sometimes and of course support the little Mercado here on the square for quick last minute items. At some local farmers market, if you like one particular fruit or vegetable, farmers can sell you a large box(wooden/cardboard) for a crazy cheap price! As they are usually there to try and sell as much produce as they can, because otherwise it doesn't stay fresh for a long time, they can give you crazy deals. Usually rounded up numbers like 5/10/15 € a box. Very useful for fruits or veggies you use everyday, such as onions, apples, oranges, etc.

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Self catering is always the best way to save a few quid whilst travelling!! It's always an interesting cultural experience going to supermarkets, we find, as every country has it's unique products and quirks. We always try to avoid plastic bags but they seem to insist on using them in the market here. So we save them and reuse them again and again until they end up as rubbish bin bags.

      In general the groceries will always be cheaper in the big supermarkets than the local stores. Lidl tends to be the cheapest as well. The only exception is that some fruit and vegetables can be cheaper in local markets than in supermarkets. It's best to shop around. 👍 ~ Lee

    The country I am from €100 can live a family for a month .. and if they wanna live very comfortably then € 400 will do it including rent but the minimum wage of the country is only €120 a month so the ordinary citizens living there will say it's very expensive because their wages is only €120 monthly but the European tourism may say this is the cheapest country pla pla because their live style is very much difference .....
    However the prices in Portugal supermarkets isn't that much difference the lid in uk

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes that is true. Prices and the concept of a bargain is always relative to the income potential in any country. After travelling throughout Europe we have found Portugal to be the best value for money overall (In western Europe). It's been a few years since I've been inside a UK Lidl but really liked shopping there. Food may be comparable but alcohol is most definitely way cheaper here.

      Organic foods here are a steal especially outside of Lisbon, but even there, compared to Wholefoods prices, they are a screeming difference. At Lidl you find quite a nr. of Organic/Biologic items. FYI, I get 6 bio eggs for €1.99, bio coffee 200gm for €3.99 (delicious) a bag of carrots 1kg €1.99, a bunch of 3 courgettes €1.99, bio yogurts at Auchan Supermarket I have found medium tubes of German made yogurt on sale for €2.39, so the difference in prices between here is night and day.
