  • Licensed games have a bit of reputation for being lackluster, lazy attempts at entertainment...but sometimes they can be a fantastic fleshing-out of a film series. Let's explore why they're bad, why they're good, where they went, and where they're going...

First upload of the year! I enjoyed the harry Potter games, especially Prisoner of Azkaban on PC. I think one aspect I enjoyed about this game besides exploring the castle, was spending more time in moments that were cut short like riding Buckbeak and defense against the dark arts training. These moments are more fleshed out in game and it provides a unique way to fill the gap that the movie didn't have enough didn't have time to cover

I never noticed that they stopped making these. I think another reason they disappeared was the movement of video game sales to online rather than physical stores. In the 00’s where every store from Walmart to BestBuy had a dedicated and popular game section, to now where Steam/similar online stores are where 99% of game sales happen, makes it less likely you’ll sell your Shrek game to unsuspecting parents.

I don’t think we’ll ever see a movie licensed game that’s timed to the release of an external movie to be an extra cash grab as part of its marketing campaign, as that era of games is dead and buried now.
But there’s pretty much no end to what relevant licenses could do going forward, and even though things get messy where rights and ownership are concerned, there is definitely a market for remaking these older licensed games as the majority of the work is done for the developer, and the nostalgia will do the rest of the work for you. (Unless you Rockstar it completely, which you NEVER want to do, you gotta try a bit at least.)

A Series of Unfortunate Events on PS2 was one of the first games that my parents got for myself and my older sister when we got our PS2 for Christmas. I actually still have the copy they gave us! It wasn't a perfect game by any stretch, but it was still really fun from what I remember. I could see a remake or reboot of it happening, given that they had a practically fully fleshed out series on Netflix in recent years. Even a Lego version of the game would be fun.

Happy new year, hoping all friends and family are healthy and happy during this times! A bugs life, The emperor s new groove, lion king Saga) and the 4 first Harry potter games is a definite favourites! Love your videos!

Among my favourite are the early Harry Potter games, LOTR (RotK and The Third Age), the first Narnia game, Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb, and A Series of Unfortunate Events.
Goblet of Fire is not bad, you must value it for what it is. Of course it could've easily been the best in the series if it had combined those original big levels with the rest of Hogwarts and more plot, but it still used some good stuff, as you pointed out in its review. On the other hand, Order of the Phoenix seemed a "chore-boy" repeatitive experience to me.

I have a bunch of pretty good movie licensed games
Shrek Super Slam, Tarzan, emperor's new groove, Harry Potter Quidditch World Cup and Peter Jacksons King Kong.
sometimes they really can be good :)

Everything I thought I might be able to add as an extra comment you pretty much already covered in this video, particularly in explaining that the rise or MTXs meant that there was no incentive to create whole new games for consoles when the financial returns would probably be greater on even cheaper made mobile apps over a period of time than one purchase at the GAME store counter as it was for the majority of these games in the 2000s.
Some of these games were able to work around their rushed development schedule and remain quite memorable, but it’s not a shock they got the reputation they did and didn’t really live long outside the 360/PS3 era.

Great video, what a wonderful surprise. You touched on so many interesting subjects in this one. Something you did not mention, however, is the power of fandom (and I get why this was not part of the video). There are so many projects in the works done by talented fans to sometimes remake, rejuvenate or expand existing beloved games: probably the best examples would be immense projects such as Beyond Skyrim or TES Renewal. But also smaller niche games like the early HP ones or even LEGO Rock Raiders receive love from modders with new content or the games being completely remade on a newer engine. The nostalgia factor for all these older games plays a huge part in their respective futures. I mean - that's essentially why your channel exists, right? We watch you play and discuss old games, some of which received very negative reviews - why? Because we still like them for whatever reason.

Happy new year! This was pretty good.Very well structured, and you clearly put alot of effort into the editing. I think to make things a little punchier it would be cool If you would maybe limit the repetition of certain phrases. For example you mentioned you were going to look at the old Harry Potter games twice. Good stuff though, and I watched till the end :)

I know that one of the best selling norwegian games ever is Pinchcliffe Grand Prix - a kids game released in 2000 when the movie its based on is from 1975. The game is fantastic (and still worth playing if you can get it to work), but its fun that a licensed game based on a (very popular) 25 year old kids movie did so well. Maybe the parents who saw the movie when they were young bought it for their kids.

I think making 2d side scrolling movie based games is the best option to have success with the genre. They won't have the expectations of a full 3d/3rd person game and I just personally love side scrolling games. The last one I can think of was The Mummy Demastered and that was received really well, even though the movie itself wasn't, people still loved the game. I wish those developers would capitalize on that and make more but who knows, maybe it's difficult getting the licensing. These games were much more common during the SNES/Genesis days and also very common during the GBA era as well and somewhat DS too. I would love to see some new Marvel, Star Wars etc 2d side scrolling movie based games or just licensed games in general I think they would be received really well. I think it just comes down to the developers, in the right hands they could be great.

I'm in two minds about game remakes in general. Most of the time I really don't think it's needed. I'm 100% for re-releasing older games on modern platforms so they can actually be played. When original source code and assets are lost then a remake does make sense.

    • @PhilOfGlimmer
      @PhilOfGlimmer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah I'm thinking the same I think. Like for example I'm glad crash and Spyro were remade so they can be played on every platform now, but they will never replace the originals. Some remakes are done very lazily. I think I would be more interested in a similar thing to Spider-Man, where it's more a spiritual successor

8:18 , for those who are interested, J.K Rowling actually gave the game developers a list of spells for the video games.
There's an interview with one of the game designers for the first three HP games on PC somewhere on TH-cam (highly recommend).
They were super vague, which he says worked in their favour. (For Flipendo, she just said "pushes objects:)
Also, according to him, during the first film production, they were given nothing but super blurred photos of Hogwarts, and eventually, through persuasion, allowed a game designer to visit the set, provided he only brought a notebook to take notes. So much was hidden from them, it's amazing what they created with limitations. Which is fittingly what I think makes older games more interesting.

The last good movie licensed game that i remember was X-men Origins Wolverine Uncaged. Infact it was one of the rare cases where the game itself is waaaaay better than the movie.

As a massive Dinosaur nerd, I absolutely loved 'Disney's Dinosaur Action RPG' (their words, not mine) or Jurassic Park III: Danger Zone. I've played almost every LEGO game there is, the original LEGO Star Wars was the game that introduced me to the IP I love so dearly, and there are a couple more licensed Disney games such as 'Tarzan' or 'Donald Duck: Quack Attack' which love for very nostalgic reasons. Oh, and 'The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer' is an absolute blast when played with a friend.

You think six months is late to release a movie tie in game? In 2005 Rockstar released The Warriors for the PS2, which is based on the movie from 1979. It also happens to be one of the best games I've ever played...

The worst licensed game I played was The Godfather II on Xbox 360 and the best would probably have to be The World Is Not Enough on N64 or Die Hard Trilogy
