    such a nice photos! this video gives me enjoying actually, it's really like peace of goodness among other empty videos from people that can't understand what is the street fotography, but bought newest fuji and etc. and makes million random photos that i tired looking it... thank you for your video! I bought more early model of this camera g10 and I really enjoyed, because artist's eye, the composition and knowledge of base settings (not sharpness, not quality) is really matter, you are talented wow

    I own many cameras, both film and digital. But I have not bought a new camera in ten years. Though I will this year. But I will say as photo editing software and apps get better every year, they breathe new life into older cameras. I have an Olympus XZ1 and a Panasonic LX100 that produce even more beautiful images today then when I first bought these cameras due to ever better photo editing.
    And your photos were great!

    Excellent camera, probably generally underrated now although over priced on used market as most digicams are now. But one of Canon's best so called point and shoots. I'm still using the S95 and S100, still great at low ISO. Your images are good, so it probably doesn't really matter too much which camera you use.

    Great photos! And I disagree with you at 03:35 - the grain does not look bad! It adds a lot of atmosphere. I love clear ultra-sharp pictures, but I also love grain. This CCD sensor adds grain that looks like old film that's pushed, which is fantastic.

  • @lazarusrize

    Great video and beautiful pictures. Did you make the point that shooting RAW with this camera gives the captured images more of a film look automatically, or is editing required to achieve? Thanks!

    • @JuanBuhler
      @JuanBuhler  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, that look is more or less automatic because in RAW you don't get compression artifacts on the noise. But I do edit my photos. Not necessarily to make them look more like film, but I edit nevertheless.
      The main point I'm trying to make is that what many people consider "digital" noise is mostly compression artifacts on noise. The noise itself is not necessarily unpleasant, in the same way that film grain is not.

    Buenas fotos Juan, una camarita humilde con la que se pueden obtener buenos resultados. La serie G evolucionó mucho y creo que de la serie la que más me convence es la G7X, con sensor de 1 pulgada, bien compacta, bolsillera, buen agarre, buena construcción y con una calidad de imagen aceptable. Tuve la G1X y me salió malísima, los flex tanto de la pantalla como del objetivo se rompieron (con menos de 7 mil disparos y con el cuerpo muy cuidado). Además excesivamente pesada. El problema de estas cámaras es que son muy complicadas de reparar porque para llegar al objetivo hay que desarmarla por completo. La vieja línea G no estaba bien sellada y solían tener problema con el polvo. Para cámara compacta iría con una Pentax Q o alguna M43 de Olympus o Lumix. Saludos.

    I still grab my Pentax MX-1 compact 8 or so years later or my Pentax Q7/QS-1 unless I know I'm going to need the power of my mirrorless or KP. The MX-1, Q7, and QS-1 all use the same size tiny sensor as the G15 shown here. I was considering getting a G15 or G16, compacts from that era are fun to collect, especially the more premium ones.

    • @JuanBuhler
      @JuanBuhler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same here, I love the MX-1. I discovered it late, in 2019 or so. Wish I had gotten one when they were new!

  • @stephrgmn102
    @stephrgmn102 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Juan, your photos are really great ! Love the film look you get out of your G15, it's something I look for and I was never able to properly get.
    Right now, I'm on the hunt for a comptact camera for everyday use to complement my Nikon D810 I use for landscape and macro photography. I quite like (understand need) optical viewfinders, I am thus drawn towards Canon G series cameras and I'm curently debating either I should get a G1X or a G15. They're about the same price used in my area so I put them in the same league. I hike quite a lot and shot in a variety of settings, mostly natural areas, especially in low light situation such as in dense forests, early in the morning or late in the evening.
    On the one hand, the G1X bigger sensor should perform better in low light, on the other hand the G15 is newer and has a much faster lens which counter G1X sensor's advantage. Primarly I considered having a small sensor like a bad feature always, but after watching your video about small sensor cameras (which was very interesting btw), I can see certain advantages. Once again, I'm looking for having a film look with a nice grain texture for this use and consider doing small prints.
    Undortunately I will not be able to try and compare both cameras and I will have to order one "blindly". I was wondering if you had the opportunity to try and compare both the G1X and the G15 or if you had any advices regarding my situation ?
    Thanks,
    Stephan.

    • @JuanBuhler
      @JuanBuhler  ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't used the G1X, or any of the bigger sensor Canon compact for that matter.
      The only relevant comment I can make is that the optical VF of the G15 is tiny, and only good to point the camera in the right direction. With that in mind, maybe you want to consider one of the GR Digitals, you can always add an optical viewfinder to the flash mount...

    • @JuanBuhler

      No, I haven't. The main reason I use CHDK is shooting RAW, and the G15 can do it natively.

  • @Suhailagha
    @Suhailagha 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    What was your criteria for choosing this camera? I have the Sony ZV1 and it has most of the same features as this one, minus the colour science and the addition of a 1 inch sensor. Would you use a camera like to ZV1 to shoot instead of the G15? If not, then why not? Thanks!

    • @JuanBuhler
      @JuanBuhler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I got the G15 in 2012/2013, when it was new. The ZV1 is from 2020 no? As it is it should be a lot more capable than the G15 in every way.
      I'd definitely use it in the street!

    Hello, and thank you for the review. I have a Canon G10 (coming from decades of shooting with film cameras) easy transition,its all there. EXCEPT for one thing i miss very dearly. I have not found any scale to depth of field when using different apertures. Could you help me maybe ?

    • @JuanBuhler
      @JuanBuhler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, sorry I never answered this! Not sure I can help--but in general, these cameras' sensors are so small that I usually just rely on depth of field. Search for "dof calculator" and check what the dof looks like with a small sensor like the G10 has.

    • @JuanBuhler
      @JuanBuhler  ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't used the G11. That camera is 10MP, not a lot lower than 12, so I imagine it's not "far" worse than the G15. The G15 is 3 years newer so it's probably a lot faster electronics in general, that usually makes a difference in terms of usability.

    this or an older leica d-lux 3?

    • @JuanBuhler
      @JuanBuhler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The d-lux 3 is from 2006, I would be hesitant to recommend that. A bit fairer comparison would be with a Panasonic LX-3, or Leica d-lux 4 (same camera). And you can have the Panasonic for ~$120 right now on ebay.
      Still, the G15 is a fantastic little camera. I think I prefer it over even the LX-3. Note: I have one LX-3 that I need to take out to see how it feels, but I have used the G15 extensively as seen in this video.
