American, lived in Norfolk and could only understand about half of what a Geordie I was around a lot said. The hardest accent I came across was an older man who had some sort of Fens accent. I could not understand anything he said. He did gardening work for me but it was the local pub manager who acted as intermediary with him.
I don't find Geordie difficult, not sure why, perhaps it's because of binge-watching so many Catherine Cookson movies. What's always been the hardest for me, and I'm American, is trying to understand Cockney slang, since they use so much slang, and will always contain at least one mystery slang word in every sentence it seems like. When I first went to a pub near my flat when living on the East End for study abroad there, I swore they were speaking a different language, since I couldn't even figure out what they were saying, just trying to ask where the toilets were and order a jacket potato at a pub. This is the conversation I had: Me: "Do you know where the bathroom is? Pub: "Kahzy's right up the apples and pears." Me: "The bathroom's up the apples and pears?" Pub: "Yea." Me: "Okay...can I order food from the pub menu?" Pub: "Sure love, but the butcher's wee bit Brahms and Liszt." Me: "The butcher's what?" Pub: "Are you a septic?" Me: "Am I a what?" Pub: "are you a Yank?" Me: "Oh, yes." Pub: "Why didn't you say so love, toilets are upstairs, but not sure you want to order food since the cook's been drinking all day." And I just remembered thinking oh okay, but what's all this talk about fruit and butchers?
It was easy for me given I am an expat Geordie now living in Tasmania. Australians understand Geordies far better than, for example, people from Luton do.
I really think the hardest accent found in the UK is Glasgow, Scotland. The is a story, possibly a joke, that a London newspaper once had an advertisement in the "Help Wanted" pages for a "Glasgow to English interpreter."

Interesting thanks for that

Right
I’m Geordie, very interesting to learn about my accent in a bit more depth! Especially the phonology behind it
Excellent

I'm English but a broad Geordie accent is hard to understand
These accents are relatively soft....years back they would have been much broader.
True enough
I love Geordies but i can't understand what they are saying
Most of us can't...
Clydeside accent would be the hardest to understand!
